Simple Biomechanical Test could aid Implant Success

Benchtop test setup for the high-output screening of dental implants (DO = dissolved oxygen, T = temperature, pCO2 = partial pressure of CO2, DAQ = data acquisition, POST = post-processing data treatment, MCDA = multi-criteria decision aiding).
Opportunity to gain deeper insight into potential interaction between implants and body tissues through high-output benchtop screening.

Tsukuba, Japan, Oct 10, 2017 - (ACN Newswire) - The quality of the tissue-implant interface is key to the success of implant integration. High-output benchtop screening can help developers in assessing the complex interplay between biomaterials and the body to better prepare for clinical trials, highlights a review in the journal Science and Technology of Advanced Materials.

High-output screening aims to maximize the amount of consistent data and information from the minimum number of tests or specimens. One way to achieve this is to simulate the implant environment in more detail during benchtop tests. By enhancing the clinical relevance of in vitro results, medical device makers will gain deeper insight into the performance of their designs, making it more straightforward to select leading candidates. Identifying poor performers earlier in the pipeline could help bring down development costs and speed up the introduction of promising designs.

"This drastically reduces the time and effort required for clinical tests," writes review author Michael Gasik, a researcher based at Aalto University Foundation in Finland.

To illustrate the concept, Gasik considers a dental implant, one of the most common types of implants worldwide, and advocates a simple biomechanical test for analyzing tissue implant quality.

A dental implant test sample comprises a titanium post surrounded by cultured tissue. The supply of media to the sample is controlled to enable changes in temperature, acidity, and bacterial conditions. The post can be vibrated to mimic chewing, and mechanical measurements assess how firmly the implant is bound to the tissue.

For implants, study objectives include the identification of improved tissue-biomaterial adherence and resistance to bacterial contamination and biofilm formation. Gasik notes that test platforms can also be tailored for more complex scenarios such as articular cartilage repair.

Acquisition of The Dental Hub's 3 clinics will expand NSG's dental portfolio to 9 clinics and 2 dental supplies companies

SINGAPORE, Oct 11, 2017 - (ACN Newswire) - Healthsciences International Pte Ltd ("HSI"), through its fully owned subsidiary HSI Nominees A Pte Ltd, will pay approximately S$3.2 million to acquire a 70% stake in three dental clinics in Singapore as part of efforts to accelerate its growth. HSI is a subsidiary of New Silkroutes Group Limited ("NSG" or the "Group") and holds the Group's healthcare investments.

The move comes just four months after HSI completed the acquisition of majority control of six dental clinics and two dental supplies companies in Singapore in a major push to expand its healthcare capabilities. NSG acquired HSI in December 2016 in a deal that valued the healthcare company at S$4.25 million.

The three clinics to be acquired currently operate under The Dental Hub brand and are located at Bedok North Street 4, PSA Building at Alexandra Road, and Yew Tee Point at Choa Chu Kang. Collectively, they generated about S$2.7 million in revenue and S$0.5 million in earnings in their last financial year.

Following this acquisition, which is expected to be completed by 30 October 2017, HSI will have nine dental clinics and two dental supplies companies, making it one of the fastest-growing dental chains in Singapore.

Besides the dental business, HSI also has two clinics in Singapore providing complementary integrative therapies based on Western standards of medical care. HSI, in which NSG has a 69.35% stake, also operates clinic and pharmacy management systems in Singapore and China.

NSG will issue approximately 7.2 million new shares at 44 Singapore cents each as consideration for The Dental Hub clinics, which are currently equally owned by two dental practitioners, Dr Ainsley Toh and Dr Foong Siew Hong.

Dr Goh Jin Hian, NSG's Group Chief Executive Officer, said: "We are beginning to establish our healthcare services platform, which will eventually include medical specialist services and hospital management. Although we are starting with small steps in Singapore, HSI aspires to be a regional healthcare player in time to come."

New Silkroutes Capital Pte Ltd ("NSC"), a wholly owned subsidiary of NSG, will be responsible for raising funds to support the growth of HSI. NSC, the Group's financial services arm, is expanding its capabilities to focus on wealth management, investment banking, as well as private equity and venture capital financing in the energy, healthcare and real estate sectors.

However, at present, forgetfulness is considered to be natural consequence of aging and is thus difficult to treat. Onji-no-Megumi can be used to improve the memory functions of middle aged and older people who are concerned about forgetfulness.

Eisai is proactively engaged in spreading awareness of dementia and forgetfulness as well as in community building activities to support collaboration between stakeholders such as government, medical and care facilities.

Through the delivery of this product, Eisai seeks to further contribute to increasing the benefits provided to those who are concerned about forgetfulness, even in the area of self-medication.

1) 2017 C&C Prize Recipients

Group A

Doctor Mitsuo Kawato
Director, ATR Fellow, ATR Brain Information Communication Research Laboratory Group, Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International

Citation

For contributions to pioneering research and development based on the advanced integration of neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and information engineering, and its innovative application to psychiatry

Achievement

Remarkable progress has been made in neuroscientific research to elucidate the structure and functions of the brain over the past fifty years. This research remains important today as we seek a deeper understanding of neuronal functions, such as information representation and processing in the brain. Illuminating the brain's functions allows us to better understand advanced cognitive operations. This in turn accelerates research in computational neuroscience leading to the creation of machines and computer programs that operate on the same principles as our brains. We anticipate that many new findings will be made through the integration of psychiatry, neuroscience, and information engineering to help resolve pressing social issues such as maintenance and recovery of the cognitive functions in the elderly, and precise, personalized medicine in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses.

Dr. Kawato's groundbreaking achievement of integrating neuroscience and information engineering to elucidate the information processing mechanisms in the brain with artificial intelligence technologies has been instrumental in expanding the application of computational neuroscience to the field of psychiatry through cooperation with universities and institutions in Japan. Dr. Kawato has also been involved in developing innovative diagnostic techniques for using fMRI to classify brain circuits and utilizing fMRI neurofeedback as a therapeutic tool. His achievements have set the course for psychiatry to be transformed into a precise, personalized medicine that enables treatment of patients who, for example, do not respond to drug therapies. In consideration of his pioneering work in tackling some of the most pressing issues facing the world today by applying innovative BMI-based information processing technologies, Dr. Kawato highly deserves as the C&C Prize.

Group B

Professor Alfred V. Aho
Professor, Columbia University
Professor John E. Hopcroft
Professor, Cornell University
Professor Jeffrey D. Ullman
Professor Emeritus, Stanford University

Citation

For outstanding contributions to laying the foundation of theoretical computer science and to education in that field through numerous influential publications

Achievement

In recent years, many of the remarkable changes and advances that have taken place in people's lifestyles and social environments can be attributed to information technology (IT). IT has not only transformed the hardware of our social systems, but also played a huge role in bringing about innovations in software that are crucial to building a comfortable society, which is the ideal embodied in the Computers and Communications (C&C) concept.

Professor Aho, Professor Hopcroft, and Professor Ullman have all conducted pioneering research in core computer science disciplines such as automata, formal languages, language theory, compilers, data structures, algorithms, database theory, and graph theory and have published numerous research papers and books about these subjects on their own and in collaboration. Books co-authored by all three doctors, such as "The Design and Analysis of Computer Algorithms" (1974) and "Data Structures and Algorithms" (1983), not only provided an expert and comprehensive summary of research findings in the field at the time, but were also highly influential from an educational point of view. These three doctors have also been lauded for their contributions to educating and mentoring next-generation researchers over many years, and have received many prestigious awards and honors in recognition of those achievements. In summary, in addition to their outstanding achievements in their specialist academic research fields, Professor Aho, Professor Hopcroft, and Professor Ullman, through their writings, teaching and mentoring, have made major contributions to computer science education, theoretical understanding, and fostering of talent, and have been instrumental in bringing about remarkable developments in computer science-the core of C&C-that we witness today. They are all most worthy recipients of the C&C Prize.

Colt Brings Asia's Major Stock Exchanges Closer with Revamped Low Latency Trading Routes

Introduces top-class connectivity between HKEX and SGX, as well as ASX and JPX

Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Oct 12, 2017 - (ACN Newswire) - Colt Technology Services today announced further network optimisations to two of the company's key low-latency routes in the APAC region. Connectivity is available for service now and provided through the company's private Ethernet-based Colt IQ Network*1. Latency for the Hong Kong-to-Singapore route has been reduced to approximately 29ms (RTD) going from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) to the Singapore Exchange (SGX). Latency for the Sydney-to-Tokyo route has been reduced to approximately 99ms (RTD) going from the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) to the Japan Exchange Group (JPX/CC2)*2. For both routes, the latency numbers above currently represent the top tier among all providers.

These optimisations continue a series of enhancements to Colt's highly touted IQ Network, including a similar revamp of its Tokyo-Chicago circuit in May. Colt has also been remarkably active in the proliferation of its network presence at key endpoints for these routes. The company unveiled fibre expansion projects in its 48th and 49th metro area networks earlier this year in both Hong Kong and Singapore.

Strong demand from the financial services sector lies at the core of Colt's network improvement efforts with each latency reduction promoting greater liquidity between stock exchanges in each Colt-linked city. In addition to market participants at HKEX and SGX, as well as ASX and JPX, traders from all around the globe stand to benefit from the recent optimisations.

Colt's Andrew Housden, Vice President of Capital Markets, stated, "Our company continues to push the envelope with ultra-low-latency connectivity. Every micro-second counts for our customers, a fact that drives us to constantly innovate and optimise, not just for capital markets, but all data-dependent enterprises - from media to manufacturing - that count on our secure, high-bandwidth connectivity to function and thrive in today's digital market. The Colt IQ Network continues to drive business through technology."

Smartphones put to use to convey competition area location information and warnings to racers crossing out of bounds

TOKYO, Oct 12, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu today announced that it will introduce a smartphone-based service for the Sailing World Cup Series Regatta to be held in Gamagori, Aichi prefecture, Japan, October 15-22. The service will provide racers information on their location within the marine race area and automatic warnings if they stray outside of area boundaries.

The competition area of the Sailing World Cup, a race in which many visitors from abroad participate, is a special coastal zone that has been established where boats without Japanese registration and sailors without boat operator permits can sail, for both practice and competition. Fujitsu is now offering a service for competitors, and accompanying coaches who are giving directions, which will display the competition area on a map, and with GPS functionality, automatically warn them when they get close to the boundaries of the area via a smartphone app. In addition, Fujitsu is providing a solution whereby competitors are contacted individually or as a group with voice as well as text messages, should an accident occur. This will enable the safe and smooth operation of the competition, while following the competition area rules.

Background

The Sailing World Cup Series Regatta will be held by World Sailing in Gamagori, Aichi prefecture, October 15-22, and will involve over 300 competitors from 45 countries and regions, in a number of competitions including yachting and windsurfing. Normally when operating a craft in Japanese waters, Japanese boat registration and boat operator permits would be necessary, but for this competition, permission has been granted for competitors and coaches to operate within a coastal zone specially established as a competition area. Previously, it was necessary for event organizers to station a number of staff near the boundaries of the competition area to keep watch and ensure that competitors do not stray out of the area, placing a significant burden on the organizers.

Summary of the Newly Deployed System

1. Provides monitoring of competition within the permitted costal area

Competitors and accompanying coaches can download Fujitsu's marine cloud app to their smartphones, which can display the boundaries of the competition area on a map, and show users their GPS position. When approaching the boundaries of the competition area, the app will automatically notify the user, helping to prevent straying outside the exempted area.

2. Enables organizers to send voice and text messages

Fujitsu will offer Fujitsu IoT Solution Smart Communication, which enables a variety of communication in any situation using just a smartphone. Through a downloaded app for communication by IP transceivers or text messages, event organizers can convey warnings and general information using either voice messages or text to racers, individually or as a group.

Future Plans

Fujitsu aims to make use of the know-how it utilizes in this Sailing World Cup competition to offer services in a variety of other planned international sporting events.

About Fujitsu Ltd

- NEC-sponsored report names Tokyo the world's safest city -

TOKYO, Oct 12, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - It was announced today that Tokyo has been named the safest city in the world once again in the Safe Cities Index 2017, a report compiled by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU; the research and analysis division of The Economist Group of Britain) and sponsored by NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701). Tokyo previously earned the overall number one spot in 2015.

This EIU report evaluates the relative safety of 60 cities around the world based on an index composed of 49 indicators split across four categories: digital security, health security, infrastructure security, and personal security. Interviews are also conducted with 14 experts in the field, thereby making it possible to understand improvements in urban safety from various angles.

Although Tokyo earned the highest score in digital security and made improvements in health security, it did fall out of the top ten in the infrastructure security category.

America's deteriorating infrastructure is reflected in the rankings, with San Francisco being the only U.S. city to claim a spot in the top twenty of this category. All other cities ranked in the top ten for the infrastructure security category are either in Europe or the Asia-Pacific region.

NEC continues to focus on Solutions for Society and is striving to strengthen its global safety business by utilizing technologies such as face recognition technology boasting the world's highest recognition accuracy and video analysis technology to contribute to the realization of a safe and secure society. NEC's sponsorship of the Safe Cities Index 2017 is part of these efforts, and this is the second time it has served as sole sponsor of the report following the Safe Cities Index 2015.

Management dashboard for executives is also under consideration and scheduled to be fully operated. In addition, the system will be introduced to six of Daicel's overseas plants, aiming to accelerate management decision-making from global perspective and to further improve manufacturing productivity and product quality. Moreover, Hitachi aims to proactively expand the system to manufacturers worldwide as one of the solution cores for the industrial field of the IoT platform "Lumada".

In recent years, associated with the diversification of customer needs, globally intensified competition and the advancement of digitalization, the market environment for manufacturers has been changing rapidly. In order to rapidly respond to these circumstances, it is essential to build a business and production management system to promptly grasp and solve the issues of management and manufacturing utilizing IoT.

In these circumstances, Hitachi and Daicel have been proceeding with Collaborative Creation projects since February 2015, with a commitment to optimizing the entire production with an approach based on the Production System Maturity Model(3). The first step in the Collaborative Creation was the development of an image analysis system in July 2016 to detect signs of deviations in front-line workers' motions and facility failures, whose introduction has been completed at Daicel's Harima Plant and the Plant in China, and is currently proceeding in the Plant in Korea and Thailand. And then, its introduction is planned at the plants in the United States and Europe. Daicel is working on stabilizing product quality and productivity improvement at global level. By taking full advantage of 4M data collected at the manufacturing workplaces of Daicel, and by utilizing Daicel's production expertise and Hitachi's technology and knowledge of the IoT platform "Lumada", which integrates OT(4) and IT, Hitachi and Daicel have now developed a management and manufacturing dashboard to integrally visualize KPIs from management information to manufacturing workplaces' situations.

Utilizing 4M data in manufacturing workplaces, this system shows KPIs chronologically in graph form, which is helpful for making decisions to improve management and productivity, for each managing layer of executives, plant managers and production line supervisors. For instance, as KPIs for executives, it indicates sales, profitability, cash flow, and operational availability by business and plant, and as KPIs for plant managers, it indicates production amount and operational availability by line in the responsible plant as well as other plants' information. As KPIs for production line supervisors, it indicates the cycle time and utilization rate by responsible line as well as other lines' information. This system makes it possible to accelerate the cycle from understanding of the situation to problem identification, evaluation analysis and improvement from the viewpoint of the overall optimization for each layer. In addition, the system supports the combination of information in manufacturing premises that operate globally (e.g. processing results, video of works, etc.), analyzing the causes of defects by utilizing big data analysis technology, and making improvement measure proposals that contribute to global product quality improvements by feeding the outcome back to manufacturing workplaces.

It can also provides useful KPIs that lead to improvement activities, prioritizing viewpoints at the manufacturing workplaces, by taking advantage of the achievements where Hitachi has provided solutions for a wide range of manufacturers and the OT knowledge that it has accumulated as a manufacturer, as well as its original KPI Tree Modeling Technology(5). For example, for achieving "ultimate cost management," one of Daicel's most important KPIs, it becomes possible to seamless analysis from executives to manufacturing workplaces by collecting the work results such as actual work hours and delays against the standard takt, setup time, and waiting time due to equipment, and then by connecting the work results with high class KPIs (e.g. operational availability and manufacturing costs). This system build an environment where visualization and analysis can be operated efficiently by adopting the functions of "Lumada" such as data integration infrastructure, which unifies the formats of collected data, and data lake, which efficiently organizes and stores a broad variety of big data.

Furthermore, starting at the Harima Plants, Hitachi and Daicel plan to implement this management and manufacturing dashboard at six of the main overseas plants, and aim to globally expand the services of integrated management solutions by aggregating and analyzing information via the cloud.
