Home One-Two for Toyota GAZOO Racing

Toyota City, Japan, Oct 16, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Toyota GAZOO Racing earned a one-two finish at its home race following an eventful and rain-affected 6 Hours of Fuji, the seventh round of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_Toyota101617GAZOO.jpg
2017 WEC Round 7 Fuji

Sebastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima won their third race of the season in the #8 TS050 Hybrid, Toyota's fifth victory in six events at Fuji Speedway.

Today's win with the 1,000hp TS050 Hybrid comes at a special time in the history of hybrid technology; it is the 20th anniversary weekend of the launch of the Prius, the world's first mass-produced hybrid car.

Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez in the #7 car took second place on a day when the TS050 Hybrid showed its strong performance in wet conditions.

Persistent rain throughout the morning meant the race began behind the safety car, with Kamui at the wheel of the #7 and Sebastien in the #8, but after 12 minutes the green flags waved.

Rain intensified and fog descended on Fuji Speedway, causing several interruptions to the race. The first came on 40 minutes with a safety car period, then 40 minutes later the race was red flagged, with the #8 running second and the #7 third.

Immediately after the race resumed, the two TS050 Hybrids took over first and second, setting up a fight for victory with Porsche #1 which was regularly interrupted by safety cars due to rain, fog and accidents.

The TS050 Hybrids had a speed advantage over their rivals in heavy wet conditions but with differing fuel strategies and any advantage removed during safety cars, the final order of the podium was unpredictable throughout.

But with the 75% mark approaching, after which full World Championship points would be awarded, more heavy fog came and another safety car was called. At that point Kazuki led in the #8 with Mike second in the #7.

Visibility was too poor, particularly in the first sector, so the red flags were waved again, with the race not restarting. That came a few laps before a planned driver change for the #8 and therefore meant Anthony unfortunately did not have the chance to race.

The #7 car overcame adversity to earn the runners-up spot; Jose had earlier needed an unscheduled pit stop to change steering wheel due to a problem activating the windscreen wiper.

Toyota GAZOO Racing now heads to the penultimate round of the season, the 6 Hours of Shanghai on 5 November still with an outside chance of both World Championships. Toyota trails Porsche by 58.5 points in the manufacturers' standings while Sebastien and Kazuki are 39 adrift of the Porsche #2 in the drivers'.

Akio Toyoda, President, Toyota Motor Corporation:
"From everyone who supplies the parts to build our race car, to our fans who continue to give us their passionate support, Toyota GAZOO Racing is fighting in the World Endurance Championship with support from so many in Japan. This battle in Fuji was a very important one for us since this is where our heart and your heart come together as one. I am really pleased that we were able to race carrying the feelings of all these people and win. Thank you all for the support. It was a bit disappointing that drivers weren't able to drive all out due to the bad weather this time. I want to thank all our drivers who drove the car safely in such bad conditions, trusting Toyota's engineers, mechanics, and machines. This race was also one of the few remaining to fight against our competitor Porsche. As a companion fighting each other with the same mission for the future of automobiles, I hope Porsche, after fighting two more races, heads for the next stage saying:

"Toyota was a good rival, we want to compete with Toyota again someday". Today's rain did not allow both of us race exerting all our power however we would like to continue to battle with full power in the remaining two races. To our colleagues in Porsche, let's do our best to make our fans smile. And to our fans, we are encouraged by your continuous support. Thank you."

Hisatake Murata, Team President:
"It is fantastic to stand in the centre of the podium again for our third win of the season. We have fought very hard to achieve this, and it is even more special here at our home race. Thank you to everyone who came to Fuji Speedway today to support us, despite the bad weather. They really give us extra motivation and I am pleased we could show them an exciting fight with Porsche. Our drivers and car performed very strongly today in the wet conditions. Our target now is to fight hard with Porsche in the final two races and create an exciting end to the season for the fans."

TS050 Hybrid #7 (Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, Jose Maria Lopez)
Race: 2nd, 113 laps, 3 pit stops. Grid: 4th. Fastest lap: 1min 38.747secs

Mike Conway (TS050 Hybrid #7):
"Well done to the car #8 guys; they did a fantastic job. It's great to get a one-two at our home race and a nice reward for the team for all their hard work. On our car the team did really well to maximise what we had and get second. My stint was relatively short and it was tricky in tough conditions. I was fighting with the Porsche and we had good enough pace to stay in front."

Kamui Kobayashi (TS050 Hybrid #7):
"Congratulations to the whole team for this result and particularly to car #8. I am really happy for everyone. We had struggled with our car this week but we found something before the race which worked quite well. We improved the car quite a lot throughout the race. The weather conditions were difficult, also for the fans, so thank to them for supporting us. I hope they enjoyed this result."

Jose Maria Lopez (TS050 Hybrid #7):
"The #8 guys did a fantastic job and deserved their win, but actually every driver did well because it was really tough out there. I want to thank the team for their big effort to improve after a difficult Saturday. Fuji is a very impressive event; it has been my first time to race here and now I can see why it's so special. We will enjoy this result and look forward to the next one."

TS050 Hybrid #8 (Sebastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson, Kazuki Nakajima)
Race: 1st, 113 laps, 2 pit stops. Grid: 3rd. Fastest lap: 1min 38.070secs

Sebastien Buemi (TS050 Hybrid #8):
"This a great result for the team and also for our home fans here at Fuji; thanks to them for such great support, especially considering the weather. Today Kazuki drove a great race so I would like to praise him for that. Even though I did a bit of the work, Kazuki did the most. Congratulations also to the entire team for a great job here."

Anthony Davidson (TS050 Hybrid #8):
"Full credit to Kazuki and Sebastien today. They drove a fantastic race in tough conditions and the team performed well too. Unfortunately I didn't get in the car; I did have my helmet on twice but circumstances didn't work out. That's just the way it goes; it just means I am looking forward even more to the next race."

Kazuki Nakajima (TS050 Hybrid #8):
"Before the race we targeted a one-two finish so I'm really pleased that we achieved it. It's a great result for the whole team; I am very happy with the job everyone did. I think we deserved the win because we had good pace in the wet conditions. It's my third win here at Fuji and it's particularly special to win in front of our home fans who gave us such great support."

Meanwhile, the Food Security situation has also visibly worsened in parts of the world, including South Eastern and Western Asia.

"The number of people in Asia without adequate access to a safe and nutritious food supply is growing - and that's simply unacceptable," said Dr. Siang Hee Tan. "The responsibility to ensure everyone has enough healthy food to eat is a shared one. The plant science industry fully supports the FAO in the pursuit of wiping out world hunger, and is committed to ensuring farmers in Asia are empowered and enabled to produce more food for a growing population."

According to the UN, the world's population is projected to exceed nine billion inhabitants by the year 2050, and Asia alone is expected to have roughly one billion more people living within it(1).

Growers around the world will need to produce as much as 70% more food than today to meet the expected needs of our population by 2050 while facing a host of obstacles including climate change. The numerous innovations of plant biotechnology and crop protection will be key in driving sustainable production of a safe and nutritious food supply to feed our growing population.

"FAO numbers indicate that 85% of the world's 525 million smallholder farmers live and work within our continent," added Dr. Tan. "These farmers are crucial to combatting hunger in Asia; they deserve our support and access to the latest technological tools to grow more food with fewer natural resources."

Crop protection products prevent nearly 40% of global rice and maize harvests from being lost every year(2). Meanwhile, biotech crops helped slow the advance of climate change by reducing carbon emissions. For example, it is estimated biotech crop plantings in 2015 reduced carbon emissions by 26.7 billion kg which is equivalent to taking 11.9 million cars off the road for one year(3).

Offering proofs-of-concept migration without the need to buy software licenses

TOKYO, Oct 16, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu today started sales of SAP S/4HANA Environment Provision Service, which enables companies to undertake a proof-of-concept migration to SAP's next-generation ERP S/4HANA, without the need to purchase SAP software licenses.

Aimed at customers considering migrating from an existing SAP ERP 6.0 system to SAP S/4HANA, this service offers a complete suite, including an IaaS environment, SAP software licenses, and an operations service, for a monthly fee(1). In addition, because this service allows customers to use the SAP Cloud Platform, the cloud service SAP is promoting as an application development platform for SAP S/4HANA, customers can check the operation of their applications in the new environment.

This service enables a trial migration without purchasing an SAP S/4HANA software license, allowing customers to observe how the system will respond to actual tasks. They can evaluate their decision in implementing the system by checking the practicality of a migration and getting a rough estimate of the required investment. Fujitsu is launching this service initially in Japan(2), and will be expanding it around the world going forward.

Fujitsu will continue to offer a variety of services supporting the deployment of and migration to SAP S/4HANA, which provides next-generation ERP supporting digital business for customers.

Background

In order to achieve digital transformation, a variety of elements are necessary for mission-critical systems that make up systems of record (SoR), such as an interface that can flexibly connect with systems of engagement (SoE), high speed data processing, an integrated user interface, and a platform for rapid application development. Utilizing SAP S/4HANA and SAP Cloud Platform, which combine all of these elements, has become one of the most effective methods of achieving digital transformation quickly.

Reportedly, there are currently about 2,000 systems in Japan operating SAP ERP 6.0, for which maintenance support is expected to end in 2025. In order to migrate from an existing SAP ERP 6.0 system to SAP S/4HANA, it is necessary to test whether assets, including independently developed add-on functionality, can be migrated. Until now, customers also needed to purchase SAP S/4HANA software licenses, even when they were conducting temporary migration trials.

Now, as the first part of a comprehensive collaboration in the cloud business with SAP SE, announced on June 5, 2017, Fujitsu has signed a Partner Managed Cloud license agreement with SAP Japan, SAP SE's Japanese subsidiary, to offer the world's first SAP S/4HANA Environment Provision Service, providing a trial environment that includes SAP S/4HANA software licenses.

Features of the Service

The SAP S/4HANA Environment Provision Service includes a dedicated IaaS environment and enables trial migrations to SAP S/4HANA(3) without purchasing software licenses. This service can be purchased monthly from three months up to six months, and questions regarding SAP software can be answered by Fujitsu's SAP-certified consultant.

Advanced artificial intelligence learns from and aims to grow with the driver

Toyota City, Japan, Oct 16, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) today announced an outline of the concept car "TOYOTA Concept-i" series that embodies the future vision of a mobility society through which artificial intelligence (AI) enables cars to understand the driver, effectively allowing people and cars to become partners.

In addition to the four-wheel model TOYOTA Concept-i exhibited at the 2017 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January this year, a universal small mobility vehicle and a walking area mobility vehicle have been added to the TOYOTA Concept-i series. They are expected to be exhibited under the theme of "Let's move the world from here. Beyond the Motor" at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show 2017, which will be held at Tokyo Big Sight for 12 days1 from October 25 through November 5.

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_TOYOTAConceptiseries.jpg
TOYOTA Concept-i series

Toyota has infused each era with irreplaceable excitement such as "freedom and joy of mobility" based on the idea that cars are among the manufactured goods that are preceded by the word "beloved." The TOYOTA Concept-i series aims to become a "beloved car" of a new era guided by the concept of "more than a machine, a partner" to better understand the driver and grow together with the driver as an irreplaceable partner.

The core technology common to the TOYOTA Concept-i series is a technology that understands people (LEARN), applying AI to recognize emotions and estimate driver preferences. The technology that understands people (LEARN) and automated driving technology combine to lead the driver to safety and provide peace of mind (PROTECT). In addition, by combining the technology with the agent technology, it will be possible to advance technology to the point that the driver's feelings can be anticipated, leading to new Fun to Drive experiences (INSPIRE).

The core value provided by the TOYOTA Concept-i series
http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_TOYOTAConceptiseriesCoreVal.jpg

In order to provide new experiences and excitements to more people based on the idea of "freedom and pleasure of mobility for all," a universal small mobility vehicle has been added to the TOYOTA Concept-i series so that anyone can have freedom of mobility, including wheelchair users and the elderly. Additionally, a pedestrian zone mobility vehicle has been added to the series to enable free movement in the same space as pedestrians.

The AI Agent, which understands people, is able to disengage and re-engage with the driver across the vehicles in the series, thereby supporting seamless mobility and being together with the driver to achieve safe and fun mobility.

TOYOTA Concept-I

- A four-wheel model representing the TOYOTA Concept-i series, using artificial intelligence, and as a partner that understands people, this vehicle aims to become a "beloved car" of a new era.
- It combines technology that understands people (LEARN) with automated driving and agent technology, and provides drivers with safety and peace of mind (PROTECT), and new Fun to Drive experiences (INSPIRE) to enrich the enjoyment of moving.
- A cabin with a forward projecting futuristic silhouette and an advanced HMI2, as well as interactions with the Agent, achieves a new user experience.
- Toyota plans to conduct road tests of vehicles equipped with some of the concept car's functions in Japan by around 2020.

Technology that understands people (LEARN)

Concept-i estimates emotion and level of alertness by reading the driver's expressions, actions, and tone of voice in a complex manner. It compares general information such as news on the web with information on individuals such as social media activity, GPS information, and conversation history in the car, and estimates the driver's preferences based on re-occurring topics that arise.

Technologies such as deep learning are used for the technology that understands people (LEARN), such as measuring emotions and estimating preferences. Based on this technology, the TOYOTA Concept-i series provides value innovation in the areas of safety and peace of mind (PROTECT) and new Fun to Drive experiences (INSPIRE).

Safety and peace of mind (PROTECT) "Learning about people" x automated driving technology

In addition to the car's external conditions, Concept-i estimates the driver's condition using technology that understands people, and monitors the reliability of the driver and the car. For example, if the car's reliability is high and car support is deemed necessary, such as a situation in which the driver is overcome by a dangerous or high-stress situation, Concept-i switches to automated driving. Based on Toyota's "Mobility Teammate Concept" for automated driving, which aims to both watch over and assist drivers as needed, Concept-i guides with safety and peace of mind.

Furthermore, it supports the driver by stimulating the five senses, including vision, touch, and smell depending on the driver's emotion, degree of fatigue, and level of alertness to rouse drivers into an alert state when they feel drowsy, and to help drivers experiencing higher levels of stress feel more relaxed.

New Fun to Drive experiences (INSPIRE) "Learning about people" x agent technology

Concept-i engages in conversation based on the emotions and preferences of the driver. The car suggests topics of interest based on the mood of the driver, achieving a completely new style of two-way free conversation. In addition, it creates an "Emotion Map" by periodically mapping the driver's emotion and GPS data. By collecting data on individual emotions and using this information as big data, the TOYOTA Concept-i series can deliver fresh experiences by suggesting new, enjoyable routes as slight detours.

The vehicle design comprises a cabin with a forward projecting futuristic silhouette and a simple and open interior, and starting from the Agent located at the center of the instrument panel, the design theme flows from the inside out with seamless styling in which the design of the instrument panel continues to the body exterior. In addition, it provides a new user experience through intuitive HMI interaction with the Agent using a 3D-HUD (head-up display).

Toyota plans to have the TOYOTA Concept-i on the road by around 2020 and conduct road tests of vehicles equipped with some of the concept car's functions from this exhibition in Japan.

TOYOTA Concept-i RIDE

- A small mobility vehicle that emphasizes universality based on the concept of "user-friendly city mobility."
It features gull-wing doors, an electric universal sliding seat, and a joystick, achieving user-friendly operation for wheelchair users.
- The seat layout and automated driving functions make it possible for anyone to drive safely and securely.
- Use with sharing services is also envisioned. By sharing with more people, universal mobility is made easier to use.

Main Features

Universal specifications with usability for wheelchair users

The model features gull-wing doors that provide a large opening and an electric seat that slides to the entrance, so that even wheelchair users who feel uneasy when moving between the wheelchair and the car can transfer easily. Also, the opening and closing of the gull-wing door supports loading and unloading of the wheelchair, and the operation of the seat has been designed so that the wheelchair can be easily stored in the rear section.

In addition, a joystick is used, eliminating the steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedals, and the vehicle size enables wheelchair users to park and enter/exit a common parking space for one vehicle, with emphasis placed on easy operation while driving, and stopping or parking.

Moreover, the AI Agent, which is a feature of the TOYOTA Concept-i series, is positioned on the large-size display of the instrument panel and actively provides information that supports and enhances outings, such as the provision of information on barrier-free facilities.

Vehicles that provide safety and peace of mind

The driver's seat is positioned at the center when driving3. While parking and stopping, driving assistance functions such as automated parking and automated valet parking, are employed, allowing anyone, including not only wheelchair users but also elderly people, to drive safely with peace of mind.

Toyota also envisions the use of sharing services with the TOYOTA Concept-i RIDE. By sharing with many people access to universal mobility, which is currently accessible mainly on an individual ownership basis, Toyota aims to provide convenient mobility that can easily be used and accessed by anyone. The TOYOTA Concept-i RIDE provides safe, convenient, and enjoyable movement even at outside locations, using the AI Agent to disengage and re-engage with the driver across the vehicles in the series, thereby being together with the driver.

TOYOTA Concept-i WALK

- With its compact size fitting in with walking areas and automated driving function, this mobility vehicle can increase the range of movement with safety and peace of mind.
- Three wheels, a wheelbase variable mechanism, steering function, and a low floor make it easy to use and does not necessitate the use of specific clothing or footwear.
- Use via sharing services and such at sightseeing spots and other locations is envisioned, providing support at outside locations.

Main Features

Drive safely on sidewalks in a vehicle fitting in with walking areas

It is possible to rotate on the spot within a length less than a person's stride and width less than a person's shoulder width. It is a compact vehicle taking up space equivalent to that of a pedestrian while walking. It also understands the driver based on conversation with the Agent and data obtained from sensors in the handles and guides the driver to a safe state depending on the situation. If the vehicle senses danger while driving, it will actively warn the driver and automatically take avoidance measures. Furthermore, three wheels and a wheelbase variable mechanism that corresponds to speed are used, thus ensuring stability when stopping and driving.

Easy for anyone to use

By using a steering function, riders do not need to operate the TOYOTA Concept-i WALK by shifting their body weight, which enables anyone to operate it easily. Thanks to the lowered floor, people can get on and off easily and ride without being restricted by their age, gender, or clothing, such as elderly people or women wearing skirts.

With the TOYOTA Concept-i WALK, Toyota envisions sharing services that take advantage of the characteristic of the "AI Agent" to disengage and re-engage with the rider across the vehicles in the series, thereby being together with the riders. The aim is for a mobility vehicle that can be used as part of short distance movement in coordination with other transportation facilities, such as use at outside locations and when walking around sightseeing spots.

HONG KONG, Oct 16, 2017 - (ACN Newswire) - The 37th Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition) and 21st electronicAsia concluded today. Closed on 15 October due to the tropical cyclone, the fairs attracted a total of 86,000 buyers from 139 countries and regions in three days. Over 60,000 buyers visited the Autumn Electronics Fair while around 26,000 visitors attended electronicAsia. The Autumn Electronics Fair was organised by the HKTDC, while electronicAsia was jointly organised by the HKTDC and MMI Asia Pte Ltd.

HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau said: "The fair period was cut short to three days due to weather conditions, and some buyers' travel plans might have been affected. In spite of this, we have taken various measures to attract more buyers to visit the fairs on the last day, and facilitate the business connections between exhibitors and buyers. Through the on-site survey, we found that the electronics industry is positive towards the sector's outlook. Buyers are grasping the last chance to source products on the final day."

During the fair period, the HKTDC commissioned an independent survey, interviewing a total of 1,025 exhibitors and buyers about the outlook for the electronics market and new product trends. More than half (54%) of the respondents expect the overall sales of their companies will increase next year, up 6 percentage points from the survey in 2016. For major markets, respondents are most optimistic about ASEAN (92%), followed by the Chinese Mainland (91%), Latin America (85%) and Taiwan (85%).

With the Internet of Things (IoT) becoming more popular, the survey reveals that 84 per cent of respondents think audio visual items will be the product category most benefitted from the smart home trend, followed by wireless charging devices (81%) and systems items for connection with the Internet/mobile network (77%). The industry also believes that consumers are willing to pay a premium of 18% for products with smart home capabilities compared to traditional products. 81 per cent of respondents are optimistic about the virtual reality and augmented reality devices market in the next two years. For related products, they are most optimistic about audio visual items for entertainment purpose (56%), followed by mobile/on-line games (55%).

Start-ups receiving orders

The Startup zone at the Autumn Electronics Fair this year attracted close to 100 start-ups from seven countries and regions, doubling last year's number. The Zone provides a one-stop promotional platform for start-ups to meet with potential suppliers, buyers and investors. The start-up supporting institution Gadget Excelerator Lab (Gelab) led 12 start-ups to the Autumn Electronics Fair this year. Francois Lee, CEO of Gelab, said that the HKTDC had proactively promoted the Startup zone through different media platforms. "We are happy to see that many buyers from Southeast Asia and the Middle East have made enquiries, and some of them consider placing small orders to test local markets."

Strong demand for smart products in emerging markets

The fair featured a wide range of state-of-the-art electronics products to suit buyers' needs. Besides the Startup zone, the Tech Hall also featured the Virtual Reality (VR), Robotics & Unmanned Tech, Smart Tech and 3D Printing zones to showcase popular high-tech products. Jafar Sherif, a buyer from the United Arab Emirates, said as a lot of residential and commercial projects are under construction due to the Expo 2020 in Dubai, IoT and smart products will enjoy strong demand. This is his first visit to the Autumn Electronics Fair. He had found 30-40 potential suppliers of IoT solutions, AV systems and smart devices from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.

As a Mobility Company, Toyota is Committed to "Freedom of Mobility for All

Toyota City, Japan, Oct 17, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) has launched "Start Your Impossible" - a global corporate initiative that aims to inspire Toyota employees, partners, and customers and connect them with the company's core beliefs. In an age of accelerating technological and environmental developments, "Start Your Impossible" marks Toyota's commitment to support the creation of a more inclusive and sustainable society in which everyone can challenge their impossible.

Toyota believes that mobility goes beyond cars; it is about overcoming challenges and making dreams come true. The "Start Your Impossible" initiative reflects these values and highlights the company's goal to provide freedom of mobility for all. "We want to share this thinking with all stakeholders, including consumers, so that we can approach this challenge together," said Toyota President Akio Toyoda.

Since its founding as a loom manufacturer, Toyota has been driven by a commitment to contribute to society. Over its long history, the company has grown into an innovative leader that has enabled vehicle electrification on a mass scale with the development of the Prius hybrid electric car 20 years ago and more recently, the Mirai hydrogen fuel cell electric car. Toyota sees alternative powertrains, automated cars, mobility-as-a-service, and robotics as significant opportunities to move people and transform the company.

As worldwide partner of The Olympic Games and The Paralympic Games, Toyota aims to encourage creating a peaceful society without discrimination through sports and a commitment to creating a sustainable society through mobility. Toyota's values of continuous improvement and respect for people are shared by The Olympic Games, which brings together the entire world in friendship and solidarity to celebrate the highest realization of human potential.

"Throughout our history, Toyota has made the impossible possible through innovation and passion, and by continuously challenging the definition of impossible. Today, the automobile industry is clearly amidst its most dramatic period of change - and during this time Toyota remains committed to making ever better cars. - Putting the "Standard Scent and Odor Measurement Tool" into Practice -

TOKYO, Oct 17, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Seven organizations (NIMS, Kyocera, Osaka University, NEC, Sumitomo Seika, Asahi Kasei and NanoWorld) will jointly establish the MSS Forum on November 1. This forum will encourage participants from the public to carry out experiments demonstrating the performance of ultra-compact MSS (Membrane-type Surface stress Sensor) devices(1). This initiative is designed to promote the establishment of a de facto standard for olfactory IoT sensing systems.

The MSS is a sensor device developed by an international joint research group led by Genki Yoshikawa (International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA), NIMS) in 2011. The receptor layer coated on a membrane of an MSS absorbs gaseous molecules. Since various organic and inorganic materials can be used as receptor layer materials, the MSS is a highly versatile sensor capable of detecting diverse odorous molecules. The ultra-compact/sensitive MSS is potentially useful in various fields, such as the food industry, environmental assessment, medicine and safety assurance. After its development in 2011, the MSS was subjected to basic research to enhance its odor sensing capability. The MSS Alliance was launched in 2015 to facilitate collaboration between the private sector, academia and national research institutes on R&D related to olfactory IoT sensor system constituent, thereby accelerating the practical application of the MSS.

The MSS Alliance has made several notable achievements in R&D related to key constituent technologies. These include the development of sensor devices, receptor layer materials and precise evaluation and data analysis systems. Asahi Kasei, which joined the alliance in April 2017, has been developing receptor layer materials capable of absorbing gaseous molecules and techniques to coat receptor layer materials to an MSS. In addition, companies invited by the alliance carried out more than 10 demonstration experiment projects in which the MSS repeatedly proved to be both highly sensitive to a variety of odors and capable of discriminating between them.

In light of these joint research results, we plan to accelerate the practical application of the MSS. We also plan to meet requests we have received from interested groups in different fields for first-hand experience in the use of MSS olfactory IoT sensing systems. Thus, we will launch the MSS Forum on November 1 to encourage interested companies to perform demonstration experiments. The seven organizations that make up the MSS Alliance will continue the R&D on constituent technologies while the companies and research institutes in the MSS Forum promote experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the MSS in various environments. Through these efforts, we will pursue the establishment of this sensor technology to achieve a de facto standard.

Research accomplishments of the MSS Alliance

Since its launch in September 2015, the MSS Alliance has achieved the following significant developments through exclusive collaboration;

1) Developed and improved reliable sensor devices.
2) Developed new receptor layer materials that react to various target gases.
3) Developed automatic measurement systems capable of accurately evaluating multiple sensor chips under various conditions.
4) Developed electronic circuits capable of processing signals from the sensor and developed control software.
5) Collected basic data on the responses of various receptor layer materials to various target gases.
6) Developed a machine learning engine capable of accurately differentiating data from the MSS and developed a cloud analysis platform.
7) Based on these achievements, more than 10 experimental projects were conducted demonstrating the MSS being highly sensitive to and capable of discriminating between various types of odors.

In addition, NanoWorld, a founding member of the MSS Alliance, started selling MSS chips for use in scientific research in April 2016, and the MSS is now used in other fields in advanced research as well.

New framework

Since the launch in September 2015, many keen players in various fields have contacted the MSS Alliance seeking first-hand experience in the use of MSS olfactory IoT sensing system. Over the last two years, joint research by the private sector, academia and national research institutes has produced significant results, and the partner companies and organizations invited by the alliance carried out more than 10 demonstration experiment projects. These activities validated the MSS's high degree of sensitivity and ability to discriminate between various types of odors. As the next step, a new system has been organized to enable participations from public to perform demonstration experiments in their own environments.

Name of the new framework: MSS Forum
Objective: With potential candidates from the public, to carry out experiments to demonstrate the performance of the MSS olfactory IoT sensing systems, thereby accelerating to achieve a de facto standard.
Launch date: November 1, 2017
Office location: NIMS (Sengen, Tsukuba City, Japan)

Resources available to participants:(2)
- Participants can use standard measurement modules for the MSS.
- Participants will be provided with technical instructions and a data collection environment usable locally.
- A cloud artificial intelligence (AI) analysis platform is available for participants to analyze collected data.
- Participants can carry out validation experiments using their own organizations' measurement and analytical resources.
*Please note that participants are required to submit simple reports on their validation experiment results.

Future plans

The MSS Forum will conduct validation experiments in various fields to identify further issues for commercialization and to deepen and accelerate R&D for solutions to these issues. In addition, it aims to create components/modules and solutions that enable each of the constituent technologies of the MSS olfactory IoT sensing systems to be more easily utilized in product concepts of people in industry and carry out basic technology R&D including the provision of measurement, analysis and databases services.

Through these activities, technological R&D is further accelerated to gain acceptance of the MSS olfactory IoT sensing system ("Standard Scent and Odor Measurement Tool") as a de facto standard tool for measurement of scent and odor, facilitating its implementation for society.

Note: What is an MSS (Membrane-type Surface stress Sensor)?

Developed by NIMS group leader Genki Yoshikawa et al, the MSS is a groundbreaking sensor device that is ultra-compact and sensitive to odors. When molecules adsorb on the receptor layer of the MSS, stress induced in the receptor layer causes electrical resistance change in the detection parts, enabling target molecules to be measured (see the diagrams below). Capable of detecting trace amounts of various substances in the air or liquids with high sensitivity, the MSS has potential for application in a wide range of fields such as medicine, food industry, environmental assessment and safety assurance.

Schematics of the MSS. When the receptor layer coated on the center membrane of the sensor absorbs molecules, induced surface stress is detected by piezoresistors embedded on four narrow beams around the membrane.

(1) Demonstration experiments to be conducted to validate the capability of the MSS to detect and discriminate between different scents and odors in various fields, such as agriculture, the livestock industry, self-healthcare, construction materials and body odor. The experiments employ standard measurement modules for the MSS developed by the MSS Alliance.
(2) We will examine whether participants possess appropriate engineering resources.

Hitachi Launches the Systems to Automatically Generate Optimized Production Schedules and 3D Work Instructions as a Solution Core for the IoT Platform "Lumada"

Factory simulator
Assembly navigation system
Shortening Production Lead Time in High-Mix/Low-Volume Manufacturing Plants

TOKYO, Oct 18, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE:6501) today announced that as of November of 2017, the company will launch the "factory simulator" to automatically generate optimized production schedules for entire factories, and the "assembly navigation system" to automatically generate 3D work instructions based on 3D CAD data. These systems are made possible by using the IoT(1) to link a large variety of information.

These systems strengthen the lineup of the industrial solution cores of the IoT platform "Lumada", and it will follow the "progress and operation monitoring system" and the "kaizen activity (work improvement) support system", which were launched by Hitachi in July of this year. By introducing these new systems, the production lead times in high-mix low-volume of manufacturing plants can be shortened.

In recent years, due to escalations in global competition and diversifications of customer needs in the manufacturing industry, customers have been looking for mass customization that offers the same level of high quality afforded by high-volume production, even from manufacturing plants that operate on high-mix low-volume production. In manufacturing floors, production schedules are repeatedly changed whenever there are changes such as to deadlines and the volume of orders. The problem lies in figuring out how to improve production by optimizing the entire series of processes, from receipt of an order to the design, procurement, manufacture, inspection, and shipment of the product.

In response, in October of 2016, Hitachi established a highly-effective production model using the IoT in Omika Works in order to resolve the problems faced by the facility and optimize the entire process. The lead times for producing representative products(2) were shortened by approximately 50%.

The technology introduced to Omika Works was used and commodified, and a large variety of information concerning production processes, such as information about customers and manufacturing floors, was aggregated. The result was the production of two systems. The first system, the factory simulator, automatically generates optimized, medium to long-term production schedules that take into account issues such as the production capabilities and workload of the entire facility, and sudden changes to deadlines and the volume of orders. The second system, the assembly navigation system, converts 3D CAD data to 3D work instructions, and automatically generates assembly instructions for products.

System overview

1) Factory simulator

This system automatically generates medium to long-term production schedules that look at the entire production process (from the receipt of an order to the design, procurement, manufacture, inspection, and shipment of the product) to take into account the specifications and deadline of the product, and the production capabilities and workload of the entire facility. As a result, production schedules are remade to conform to changes in items such as customer deadlines and the volume of orders, and estimating the deadlines of orders before it is received becomes easy. The amount of time required by production managers for planning and procurement can be drastically reduced, and inventory assets can be scaled down by reducing loss costs and work-in-progress inventories.
Specifically, information about the production progress of each process in the facility, and information related to customer deadlines and the volume of orders, is collected. Based on this information and information such as production schedules for other products, the production capabilities of each process, and workloads, unique simulations (loading(3) / work leveling(4)) using the basic unit(5) are performed to allow production schedules for which the workload for each process is leveled to be automatically generated.

In addition, by remaking production schedules to conform to the status of the production progress, procurement plans that are optimized to minimize the work in progress in the facility can be automatically generated. Examples of issues that cause the status of the production progress to change include delays, overplanning, and changes to items such as customer deadlines and the volume of orders. By applying and implementing these plans, the entire facility can be optimized.

In a regular production scheduler, a BOM(6) must be created and the schedule must be managed. However, creating a BOM is difficult when a large number of different products are handled or when the parts to use are not specified. Even if a facility faces these issues, by using a factory simulator instead of a BOM, simple and accurate production schedules can be automatically generated by analyzing similar products by their category and using a basic unit for which the parts to be used do not need to be defined.

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_HitachiFactorySimulator.jpg
Factory simulator

2) Assembly navigation system

This system automatically converts completed pieces of 3D CAD data created during the design phase into 3D work Instructions, which allows the manufacturing floors' workers to gain intuitive understanding of the information.

In general, engineers create working drawings based on the 3D CAD data, and the manufacturing floors' workers follow those working drawings to perform their work. Manufacturing floors in which a large number of different products are handled need working drawings for each type of product, and have to re-create working drawings whenever the specifications change.

This results in a lot of work for engineers. In addition, the manufacturing floors' workers have to take time to interpret and understand the technical working drawings created by engineers, which keeps productivity from being improved.

The assembly navigation system can improve productivity, reduce the work required by manufacturing floors' workers to interpret working drawings, and reduce the work required by engineers to create working drawings, by automatically generating 3D work instructions that are intuitively understandable.

Specifically, this system incorporates the design and structure information from the completed piece of 3D CAD data, analyzes the order and movements used to disassemble the product by using a unique algorithm, automatically generates 3D work instructions to assemble the product in an appropriate order, and then provides the procedure to the manufacturing floors. As a result, manufacturing floors' workers can perform their tasks without needing to refer to more than one page, the time required to interpret the order for assembling a product from the working drawings is shortened, and variations in the work and the quality among manufacturing floors' workers are reduced. In addition, this system saves the time of engineers when creating work instructions. The 3D work instructions also indicate cautionary notes necessary for performing the tasks, such as notes on applying grease or on the number of torques to be tightened, which can help stabilize the quality of products.

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_HitachiAssemblyNavigationSystem.jpg
Assembly navigation system

The IoT platform "Lumada", which is the basis of these systems, utilizes OSS(7). "Lumada" also provides functions ranging from "Pentaho" (which enables the integration, visualization, and analysis of various types of data) to functions that are open, intelligent, composable, and secure. Moreover, these systems can quickly perform prototyping for the use of customer data and hypothesis verifications by employing the digital solution, cloud-type Collaborative Creation environment "Lumada Competency Center".

Hitachi provides consulting services for manufacturing floors and offers one-stop service ranging from identifying the challenges faced by customers to the installing systems. From November, 2017, Hitachi will expand the range of consulting services applicable to the production design phase, and assist the implementation of modular designs(8) to improve productivity and the quality of the engineer's work.

(1) IoT: Internet of Things
(2) Representative product: The control device for the power and social industry sectors, which account for about 20% of total production at Omika Works
(3) Loading: Piling up workloads sequentially by period
(4) Work leveling: Creating a production plan that matches the production capacity
(5) Basic unit: Item for which standards such as production procedures, standard operation time, and amountof resource consumption, have been established
(6) BOM: Bill of Materials (table of component structure)
(7) OSS: Open Source Software
(8) Modular designs: Designs that strive to promote standardization of components (parts) to reduce mutual dependency, thereby shortening the time needed for adjustments during the design and manufacturing processes

HONG KONG, Oct 18, 2017 - (ACN Newswire) - The 12th Eco Expo Asia will be held from 26-29 October at the AsiaWorld-Expo. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, and co-organised by the Environment Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, the expo will feature nearly 340 exhibitors from 19 countries and regions.

New group participations from Bavaria (Germany), Italy, Korea and Shanghai will join 14 international pavilions, including those from Canada and the Netherlands, which will stage the country's largest group exhibition to date, along with returning pavilions from Europe, Japan and Switzerland. Together, they will showcase an array of green products and solutions from around the world.

Speaking at the press conference, Benjamin Chau, HKTDC Deputy Executive Director, highlighted the immense opportunities in the green markets of Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. He pointed out that the latest figures show the value added of Hong Kong's environmental protection industry grew to HK$7.9 billion in 2015, representing a year-on-year increase of 1.1 per cent. Meanwhile, a report by the People's Bank of China last year estimated that mainland investment in low-carbon architecture, green transportation and clean energy will amount to RMB6.6 trillion by 2020.

Alice Cheung, Deputy Director of Environmental Protection of the Environmental Protection Department, said that through strengthening government-industry cooperation and exchange, Eco Expo Asia will help to foster green business opportunities in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, encourage green procurement among private entities and Government Departments, and promote environmental protection in public education.

Prominent zones include the Green Buildings and Energy Efficiency, Green Transportation, Waste Management and Recycling, Water Treatment and Quality Management as well as the new Startup Zone.

A highlight of this year's expo, the new Startup zone will showcase new start-ups engaged in green business, offering a prime opportunity for start-ups to meet potential investors and business partners. Fourteen start-ups from Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, Singapore and the United States will showcase their innovative products and technologies. On 27 October, a Startup Forum will be organised for these young companies to present their ideas, products and services.
