Innovation and Disruptive Technology Keys to Smart Cities of the Future

Professor K.F. Wong, Associate Dean (External Affairs), Faculty of Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
HONG KONG, Apr 15, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - Cutting-edge technology solutions are changing the way we live like never before, as we prepare for a futuristic new era of smart cities. The radical shift in the urban fabric, integrating data, communications and sensors to boost the efficiency of civic operations and services was the focus of a seminar themed 'Disruptive Technology Enabling Smart City' at the 15th edition of the HKTDC International ICT Expo at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).

Smart City Blueprint for Hong Kong Unveiled --

Exploring the technology side of this year's expo theme "Smart City: The Way of the Future", the seminar organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) was moderated by Professor K.F. Wong, Associate Dean (External Affairs), Faculty of Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

He introduced the session praising Hong Kong's own vision for a 'Smart City'. The blueprint unveiled "embraces innovative technology for a smart Hong Kong under six key areas," he said, which included mobility, living, environment, people, government and the economy.

The blueprint promises to "improve quality of life by changing ways of living", he said, while disruptive technologies, the theme of the seminar, will play a key role in making the vision a reality, bringing "better ways to live in this world".

Building Smart Cities with Data Technology --

Patrick Chan, Solutions Architect, Alibaba Cloud Hong Kong & Macau, explained how Alibaba's cloud-computing ecosystem, developed originally for the e-retail giant's businesses including the online payment platform Alipay, is now being commercialised for government and enterprise applications through what it brands 'ET City Brain'.

"Data embraces all of society," he said. "The question is how smart cities can use it?" The answer is "in a multitude of ways" - from security and the environment to health systems and medical record management.

One of the most immediate and visible benefits is traffic management alleviating traffic jams and snarl-ups in Hangzhou, the first Chinese city to embrace Alibaba's 'ET City Brain Solution'. With 8,000 traffic lights, 2,300 junctions, 11,000 taxis and 5,000 buses, Hangzhou, which also happens to be Alibaba's home, was enduring chaotic traffic when it launched Alibaba's first smart city initiative in 2016 "to make life easier and more convenient for citizens".

Through "intelligent deployment of all available real-time traffic data", including GPS and sensors revealing traffic status, traffic light control is now adjusted to optimise efficiency. As a result, Alibaba's cloud computing ecosystem has "made every junction smarter" and "improved daily transportation for everyone" - with overall traffic movement accelerated by 11%.

The 'ET City Brain Solution' is now on the drawing-board for Suzhou, Quzhou, Macau and even further afield in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur; with improved service applications extending from transport and public services to real estate, finance, health, e-commerce and entertainment - and even improving ways smart cities can adapt their systems to changing weather.

"Ultimately, through merging advanced technology and data, we are helping cities to build better services, control and organisation," said Mr Chan. Alibaba is also keen to help make Hong Kong a smarter city.

Cybersecurity Alongside Smart City Development --

"Smart cities will bring great benefits making life easier, but before we are all connected we must think about security," cautioned Garrick Ng, Chief Technology Officer, Cisco Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

As the leader of Cisco's engineering strategy and operations for enterprise, commercial and service provider systems, Mr Ng noted that by 2020, there will be an estimated 30 billion 'things' connected through the internet worldwide - equivalent to four times the world's population. "This opens the door for hackers, and makes it very easy for them to get in," he warned.

While cities are getting smarter, so are the hackers, he said: "It's a whole new world for us, but it's also a whole new world for the hackers. Hacking chaos used to happen in the movies. Now hacking is a huge industry - they are making a lot of money."

As an example, he cited the recent 'ransomware' infecting smart TVs, when hackers brazenly telephoned users promising to unlock the block for HK$500. Victims could, of course, take their smart TVs to the manufacturer for cleaning, but they would be charged about the same amount - "with a lot more hassle". "Either way you had to pay," he said.

In other frightening cases, he recalled a "huge attack" that brought down a large part of the United States internet for a day. It subsequently transpired that 100,000 internet devices were hijacked from the unknowing public to mount the attack. In Ukraine in 2015, 225,000 residents lost power supply for up to six hours during the freezing winter, as a result of 30 power sub-stations being disconnected by hackers.

WannaCry ransomware claimed 300,000 victims in 150 countries, among them motoring giants like Honda, Nissan and Renault, global logistics leaders FedEx, TNT and Maersk - were effectively shut down for a day at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Hacking is simple, he said, because so few people regularly update the 'patches' and passwords on their computers and devices, it's like leaving their houses unlocked for burglars to hijack their systems for nefarious attacks.

On the plus side, there is no turning back on smart cities, with advantages far outweighing the risks: "You can even turn up street lighting in a high crime rate area and crime drops!"

"The world is going to be a very different place in the future," he said. "But we don't only need connectivity for smart cities. We need secure connectivity."

Building a Next-generation Data-inspired Enterprise --

Finally, Michael Siu, Senior Solutions Architect, Greater China, Dun & Bradstreet, updated the seminar on the "not so scary" scenario of how his company effectively manages next generation data for enterprises.

Smart cities and enterprises depend on data, he said, and Dun & Bradstreet has been providing databases since long before the online age, since being founded in 1841 - "nearly two centuries of unlocking the truth through data".

The New York-listed data manager today boats a database of 290 million business records, and 30,000 data sources - which makes it in demand from 90% of Forbes 500 companies.

"We also play a vital part in maintaining Hong Kong's role as Asia's leading banking and financial centre," he said. "Data management is crucial."

Apart from featuring fair updates and the latest industry sourcing information, the platform allows suppliers to connect with worldwide buyers anytime, while buyers can source industry-specific products from dedicated fair websites. The Exhibition Online platform is an online extension of the physical exhibition to facilitate business discussions between suppliers and buyers beyond the fair period.

SINGAPORE, Apr 16, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu Limited, Singapore Management University (SMU), and A*STAR's Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), today announced their collaboration to develop innovative new technologies for vessel traffic management in the Port of Singapore, with the support of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

These predictive technologies will leverage the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics to optimize the management of Singapore's port and surrounding waters, which sees an immense volume of seaborne trade and traffic. The technologies will also be validated using real-world data to improve the forecasting of congestion and identification of potential collisions and other risk hotspots before they occur at sea.

The research and development for these new maritime technologies has been conducted under the guidance of the Urban Computing and Engineering Centre of Excellence (UCE CoE), a public-private partnership consisting of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), SMU, and Fujitsu, that was established in 2014.

This collaboration demonstrates the UCE CoE's continued commitment to harnessing high performance computing capabilities in the development of solutions for sustainable urban operations, offering another example of how researchers at UCE CoE are using Singapore to test-bed next generation solutions for real-world issues faced by industry and government.

The outcomes of this research and development phase, as well as the practical knowledge and experience gained through the project trials, will be integrated into Fujitsu's future maritime solutions.

Background

The Straits of Singapore and Malacca comprise one of the world's busiest sea lanes. As a globally critical point of passage for seaborne commercial shipping traffic, the continuous enhancement of navigational safety in these crowded waters is a crucial goal.

In view of this goal, the UCE CoE initiated research and development into technologies for maritime vessel traffic management in 2015, employing the diverse strengths of Fujitsu, IHPC, and SMU. IHPC contributed its capabilities in modeling and simulation, as well as probabilistic modeling and machine learning techniques, while SMU provided its expertise in large-scale multi-agent optimization models. Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. leveraged its data analytics and artificial intelligence technologies to support the endeavour.

About the Newly Developed Technologies

As a result of the collaboration between Fujitsu, IHPC, and SMU, several key technologies are being developed for improving the management of maritime vessel traffic. These include:

Prediction models, such as:
- A short-term trajectory prediction model that accurately predicts the trajectory of a vessel using machine learning and motion physics
- A long-term traffic model that can forecast the traffic situation based on the traffic patterns of a large number of vessel types, derived from historical data

Risk and hotspot calculation models, such as:
- A risk calculation model that can reliably quantify the near-miss risk of a pair of vessels, by integrating various risk models (ensemble risk model)
- A hotspot model that dynamically reveals changing risk hotspots through spatio-temporal data analysis

Intelligent coordination models, such as:
- A spatial coordination model that seeks to re-route vessels to avoid near-miss and collision incidents
- A temporal coordination model that coordinates the passage timing of vessels to reduce hotspots
- Both of the above models will support real-time decision-making to mitigate predicted risks while minimizing disruptions and ensuring smooth navigation for the vessels

These technologies will eventually be integrated and test-bedded for their potential to enhance navigational safety, such as the ability to detect and recognise a near-miss risk prior to the event (e.g. 10 minutes beforehand) by combining short-term trajectory prediction with risk calculation. Another target is to forecast and mitigate the dynamically changing hotspot before it is generated (e.g. 30 minutes beforehand) by integrating long-term traffic forecasts, hotspot calculation, and intelligent coordination models.

Comments from the Partners

MPA supports the development of technologies that harness artificial intelligence to enhance navigational safety within the Port of Singapore. Under the agreement, MPA will provide data and information for further research and development and test-bedding of technologies developed by UCE CoE for application in the Singapore waters.

"As Singapore develops future capabilities that will enhance our port operations, research and innovation will remain key to the maritime industry. As part of the recently launched Sea Transport Industry Transformation Map, MPA is supportive of collaborations among local Institutes of Higher Learning and technology companies to explore new technologies that will raise the standards of navigational safety within the Port of Singapore. We look forward to further testing the research outcomes at the MPA Living Lab," said Capt. M Segar, Assistant Chief Executive (Operations), MPA.

"A*STAR is delighted to deepen our existing partnership with Fujitsu, SMU and MPA to solve challenges faced by Singapore and other maritime nations. Such a private-public partnership model leverages capabilities from both public institutions and industry players, strengthens our collaboration through a multi-disciplinary approach, and enhances our collective ability to develop innovative solutions that can meet future maritime needs," said Prof Alfred Huan, Executive Director of A*STAR's IHPC.

"Multi-agent technology has been used extensively in coordinating the movements of unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned ground vehicles. In this project with MPA, SMU is breaking new grounds in research by proposing a next generation maritime traffic coordination technology that is akin to air traffic control, yet respecting major differences and constraints between air and sea navigation. With the advent of autonomous ships, this technology can potentially disrupt vessel traffic management to reduce human errors and improve navigational safety," said Professor Lau Hoong Chuin, SMU's Lab Director and Lead Investigator of the UCE CoE.

"Enhancing navigational safety is an enormous challenge as there is no single right path for how to achieve it. That is why we value the collaboration with A*STAR and SMU to welcome bold ideas. We also appreciate the support by MPA to examine the applicability of the solutions, and this is a great match with Fujitsu's emphasis on "co-creation". We are pleased to not only contribute technologies, but also to have provided a platform to integrate and test the technologies by different parties," said Shoji Suzuki, Corporate Executive Advisor, Fujitsu Laboratories. "Fujitsu aims to contribute to enhancing the navigational safety of the Port of Singapore with the technologies proven through the collaboration."

More than doubles the accuracy of structure detection in medical images

TOKYO, Apr 16, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of AI technology that uses deep learning to detect objects(1), even in cases when only a small amount of data is available for learning.

In recent years, there have been efforts to automate tasks in a variety of fields. In the medical field, for example, there has been a desire to use AI to automate such tasks as detecting objects, including anomalous spots, in the analysis of diagnostic images. It is typical to utilize deep learning in object detection, which involves identifying specific structures in a diagnostic image, but in order to produce accurate results, tens of thousands of images with correct data are necessary. However, since correct data can only be created by doctors with expert knowledge, it has been difficult to obtain the images in such huge volumes.

Now, Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a technology (patent pending) that takes the object location estimates produced by the object detection neural network and makes them into a reconstruction of the original image. Then, by assessing the difference between the original input image and the reconstructed image, it can create large volumes of correct data where the position of objects has been accurately estimated. This raises the level of accuracy in object detection. Fujitsu Laboratories has collaborated with the Graduate School of Medicine at Kyoto University and applied the newly developed technology to the detection of bodies called glomeruli (singular glomerulus) in kidney biopsy images. The results of an evaluation showed that in an experiment using 50 images with correct data and 450 images without correct data, compared with existing training methods using only the same number of images with correct data, the accuracy of the new technology had more than doubled, under the stipulation of an oversight rate of less than 10%.

Developmental Background

Expectations have been increasing for the automation of tasks using AI in a variety of fields in recent years. Fujitsu Laboratories has been conducting a joint research with the Graduate School of Medicine at Kyoto University(2), and one of those initiatives has been research into supporting the diagnosis of kidney disease using AI. In the medical field, there is a diagnostic test that checks the number and status of structures called glomeruli, which handle the filtration of blood. The test uses images taken in a microscope of a slice of a kidney extracted in a procedure called a kidney biopsy. It is widely known, however, that there are large variations in the time required for the task of finding glomeruli while the image is enlarged, and in how the observer evaluates the condition of the bodies, even among experts. This has created a demand for an accurate, automated count of the number of glomeruli and diagnosis.

Issues

To automatically extract data for possible glomeruli from images, it is necessary to identify the locations of the glomeruli from the images provided, and deep learning is widely known as a method for identifying the locations and types of objects in images. For this training method, it is essential to have large volumes of images along with information on the locations and types of objects in the images (correct data). However, it has previously been difficult to prepare large volumes of correct data, because it must be created by doctors with specialized knowledge.

About the Newly Developed Technology

Now, Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a partially trained object detection technology that is capable of training a deep neural network to identify objects using a large volume of images without correct data and a small volume of images with correct data.

In order to increase images with correct data, one might consider a method that increases the amount of images in the face of large volumes of image data, by having the neural network estimate object locations and supplementing them as correct data. Neural networks that have been trained on small amounts of correct data, however, have a problem unique to object detection, in that they face difficulty in estimating the location of an object in precisely the same place as it is in reality. Therefore, if the data from this imprecise estimation is used to further train the model, accuracy will be undermined.

In response, Fujitsu Laboratories has now developed technology to evaluate the degree to which the output location estimate is correct, by using the estimated results of the detection neural network as a key to reconstruct the original image using a neural network for reconstruction. Because images reconstructed from incorrect location estimates will not match the original image, by comparing the two images, it is possible to evaluate the accuracy of an estimate location. By repeatedly conducting estimations and reconstructions on large volumes of images in this way, Fujitsu Laboratories has made it possible to increase the amount of correct data while also gradually approaching a state in which the model produces correct location estimates, thereby increasing accuracy.

Effects

In joint research with the Graduate School of Medicine at Kyoto University, this technology was applied to the detection of glomeruli in kidney biopsy images. The research compared an existing object detection neural network trained using only 50 images with the correct data, with this technology, trained using those same images and an additional 450 images without the correct data. The results showed that, stipulating an oversight rate of less than 10%, similar to that of human evaluators, this technology achieved an accuracy of 27%, more than double that of the existing technology. This means that, where a single image might have an average of 22 glomeruli, this technology reduced the candidate locations needed to be searched due to the above stated oversight rate to 77, reducing post-processing costs. By increasing the accuracy of glomerulus detection and reducing the number of candidate locations, it is expected to accelerate the research of kidney diseases and the development of the diagnosis system based on glomeruli detection.

Future Plans

Though its joint research with the Graduate School of Medicine at Kyoto University, Fujitsu will endeavor to realize the quantitative evaluation method of kidney by applying the new detection technology of glomeruli. This technology is not only applicable to specific applications such as kidney biopsy images, but also to object detection more broadly, in fields lacking in images with the correct data. For example, the company envisions the technology to be applied to a broad range of areas beyond healthcare, such as in detecting defective products using images from production lines, identifying anomalous locations from diagnostic images using a variety of sensors in infrastructure facilities, and creating lists of materials to be used from architectural blueprints. Fujitsu Laboratories aims to deploy this technology during fiscal 2018 as a learning model construction technology supporting Fujitsu's Zinrai Platform Service, which makes AI technology available through APIs.

New technology is expected to enhance image quality, reduce thickness, increase flexibility, and improve durability of smart phone touch panels and other products

TOKYO, Apr 17, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - Tanaka Holdings Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & CEO: Akira Tanae) announced today that Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo K.K. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and CEO: Akira Tanae), which operates the Tanaka Precious Metals manufacturing business, discovered a single-sided, dual-layer wiring structure for metal meshes[1] used in touch sensors and a method of manufacturing the structure and has commenced development for commercial application. This technology will contribute to higher image quality, thinner devices, increased flexibility, and improved durability of smart phone touch panels and other applications.

Touch panels normally have a structure made from two sensor substrates - an X sensor substrate and a Y sensor substrate. Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo discovered a technique for forming both the X sensor and Y sensor wiring on a single layer flexible substrate. The discovery was based on the results of research conducted by Professor Tatsuo Hasegawa, Principal Research Manager at the Flexible Electronics Research Center of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. Development was consigned to Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo under the Joint Industry-Academia Practical Application Development Project (NexTEP). The discovery was made by applying the metal mesh wiring technology developed under consignment from April 2014 to September 2017 and forming overlapping silver nano-ink wire circuity on one side of the film (creating a single-sided, dual-layer metal mesh film). As a result, only one sensor substrate is needed. This will contribute to reducing costs as well as improving touch panel image quality and making panels slimmer. Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo also discovered a transparent (conducting) electrode formed by etching[2] indium tin oxide (ITO), which is commonly used in current touch panel sensors, on a glass substrate and created a structure expected to improve bending strength (increased flexibility) that even metal mesh films cannot withstand as well as a method of manufacturing this structure.

Features of the New Technology

- Single-sided, dual-layer structure contributes to slimness and improved bending strength (improved flexibility).
- By using a low temperature sintered silver nano-ink[3] and an SuPR-NaP technique[4] for pattern formation instead of etching, fine wires less than 4 um (2 um - 4 um) can be formed.
- Long films can be produced using a roll-to-roll process.[5]

As a result of these advantages offered by this product, application in high-end smart phone touch panels, which are expected to shift to bendable displays, and uses and applications in the flexible electronic device market, which is projected to grow, are expected.

Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo's Metal Mesh Film Printing Technology

Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo's metal mesh film printing technology can create fine wires thinner than 4 um. This is accomplished by applying low-temperature sintered silver nano-ink that can be formed into wires on PET film, which is not heat resistant, and fluoropolymer on a PET film or second substrate, causing adsorption and sintering of silver nano-ink on a fluoropolymer surface activated by irradiation with deep ultraviolet light, and using a SuPR-NaP (Surface Photo-Reactive Nanometal Printing) technique. In addition, Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo established a manufacturing process for the fine-wire film using a roll-to-roll processing method. This makes possible bulk printing of metal mesh films with mixed patterns ranging from several microns to tens of microns, sensor units, and frame parts. Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo is currently offering samples of metal mesh films with standard specifications (4 um, single-sided, single-layer structure) and is conducting research and development with the aim of providing sample shipments of single-sided, dual-layer structure metal mesh films in the future.

Background to Development

High-end smart phones with foldable displays and other components are expected to appear in the marketplace starting 2019 to 2020, and there is a need to create thinner and highly durable flexible touch panels.

Currently, high-transparency, projection-capacitive[6] type touch panels with multi-touch functionality (detection of multiple points) are commonly used in smart phones. Because of the high transparency and for considerations of mass production, the touch sensors in projection-capacitive type touch panels generally use transparent electrodes made from indium tin oxide (ITO) etched into a glass substrate. Research is currently being conducted, however, to find replacements for ITO because of difficulties reducing prices in the future and environmental concerns raised by waste liquids generated during the etching process. In addition, ITO has high electrical resistance and is weak when bent making large and flexible panels difficult, and consequently, it is not suitable for the future smart phone market.

Accordingly, companies are developing sensors for touch panels using metal meshes, and they are already in use in some touch panel displays and PCs. The most common wire width of metal meshes currently in use is 3 um to 7 um, and the wiring portions are within the range of human vision, posing an issue regarding widespread use in smart phones and other devices that are used at close distances.

Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo achieved fine wire formation smaller than 4 um, which was thought to be difficult, by adopting a low-temperature sintered silver nano-ink and a SuPR-NaP technique. In addition, by using this technique with a roll-to-roll format, mass production using bulk printing of sensor units and frame parts as well as cost reductions will be possible. By using the wiring technology discussed above, the outlook for single-sided, dual-layer wiring structure metal mesh films for use in touch sensors is now positive, and contributions to further development in the market for next-generation bendable and foldable smart phones that consumers want as well as the market for flexible electronic devices can be expected.

Reference: Results of Single-Sided, Dual-Layer Structure Metal Mesh Film Bending Tests

The resistance of the metal wires after the bending test tended to increase overall, but the degree of the increase in the resistance value of the metal wire on the two-sided structure second electrode surface (bottom side) was conspicuous. Also, even when the wire width on the test prototype was changed to 1 um, 2 um, or 5 um, the two-sided structure was weak when bent, and it was determined that the single-sided, dual-layer structure is resistant to bending deformation.

[1] Metal mesh:
A wiring format in a grid pattern that uses silver or copper for sensor wires rather than etching with indium tin oxide. When forming wires on the micrometer level, a surface with a photosensitive material applied is irradiated in the pattern, resulting in the formation of a pattern according to the areas that were irradiated in those areas that were not irradiated (photolithography technology), and as a result, it is believed that reducing costs with this technology would be difficult.
[2] Etching:
Also referred to as chemical cautery. Two types, wet etching and dry etching, are used, and both are used to remove unneeded thin film in order to form wiring on a printed circuit board.
[3] Low-temperature sintered silver nano-ink:
Proprietary Tanaka Kikinzoku specialty silver nano-ink that is sintered at temperatures below 100 degrees Celsius. Includes a high concentration of silver nanoparticles with diameters in the range of 10 nm to 100 nm (1 nanometer equals one-billionth of a meter).
[4] SuPR-NaP technique:
A technology for forming wires where a substrate (PET film, etc.) with a water repellent fluoropolymer applied is irradiated with deep ultraviolet light and silver nano-ink reacted with silver nanoparticles is chemically absorbed and the silver nanoparticles also adhere to one another.
[5] Roll-to-roll process
A production process where circuits are printed on a film substrate wound into a roll and the roll is rewound. This method allows for high-efficiency production of electronic devices.
[6] Projection-capacitive type
Formed from an insulating film, an electrode layer below the film, and a substrate layer on which the controller IC is mounted. Numerous electrode patterns are formed on a glass, plastic, or other substrate using transparent electrodes and other such components on the insulating film and the electrode layer below it.

LONDON, Apr 17, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - On February 20, 2018, the Company announced that the United States Supreme Court ruled in its favor in Reese vs. CNH Industrial N.V. and CNH Industrial America LLC. The decision allows CNH Industrial to terminate or modify various retiree healthcare benefits ("Benefits") previously provided to certain UAW Union represented Company retirees. CNH Industrial has determined to modify the Benefits provided to the applicable retirees to make them consistent with the Benefits provided to current eligible CNH Industrial retirees who had been represented by the UAW.

The Benefits modifications are estimated to result in a reduction of the plan liability by approximately $500 million to $550 million, realizing a corresponding pre-tax income. The actual adjustment to the liability will be finalized using current market assumptions on the applicable measurement date (expected to be in the second quarter, once the retirees have been formally advised). Under U.S. GAAP, this pre-tax income will be amortized from equity to the income statement over approximately 4.5 years. Under IFRS, this pre-tax income will be recorded in the second quarter of 2018 in its entirety.

Fujitsu Launches New GS21 Mainframe Models Supporting Next-Generation Mission-Critical Systems

TOKYO, Apr 17, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu today announced that it is updating its GS21 series of mainframe products, launching the super-scale Fujitsu Server GS21 3600 model group and the medium-to-large-scale Fujitsu Server GS21 3400 model group, with sales beginning today in Japan. At the same time, Fujitsu is also launching Fujitsu Software GSS21sx V20, with support for the new models and enhanced support for connections with open systems. The CPU performance of the new models has been improved by up to about 20% compared to the previous models, while the space required for the equipment has been reduced by up to about 40%.

This improves the consolidation and expandability of the systems, enabling them to support the expanded data volumes that accompany the advance of digitalization. In addition, the new models feature enhanced security, including systems to prevent unauthorized access when managing mission-critical systems, supporting their use for next-generation mission-critical systems in facilities such as datacenters. In order to meet the mainframe continuity needs of customers, Fujitsu has also updated its medium-to-long-term roadmap, guaranteeing continued availability and upgrades for mainframes even into 2030 and beyond. These products will be exhibited at Fujitsu Forum 2018, which will be held May 17-18 at Tokyo International Forum in Chiyoda, Tokyo.

Features of the New Products

1. Improved performance

CPU performance has been increased by up to approximately 20% compared to previous models, and with a multi-cluster system, transaction processing performance has been improved by reducing the number of times a system needs to access the System Storage Unit (SSU). This enables these systems to support the increases in data volumes that accompany digitalization.

2. Enhanced security, connection with open systems, and saving installation space

These systems not only include remote access functionality, enabling open systems to access the mainframe database, as standard in the basic software, but also are capable of transferring up to 280 GB of data at once, on the XSP(1) OS, through an enhanced file transfer functionality. In addition, in the SVPM console(2), it is possible to detect and prevent unauthorized access through user privileges and operation log management. With the GS21 3400, it is now possible to mount two clusters in a single chassis for a multi-cluster system, which can reduce installation space by up to about 40%. Moreover, with an all-in-one model(3), it is possible to mount peripheral equipment(4) inside the chassis as well, saving installation space.

Medium-to-Long-Term Roadmap

Even today, mainframes are an indispensable part of a mission-critical environment. Fujitsu has set a new product roadmap, under which it will continue to provide products through 2030 and beyond, meeting the needs of customers who need to continue to utilize mainframes, as well as customers who are working to create new services by combining mission-critical systems with digital technology.

Sales Target

Fujitsu aims to sell 800 units across all mainframes worldwide during the three years from fiscal 2018 through fiscal 2020 (Fujitsu's fiscal year ends March 31).

(1) XSP Short for OSIV/XSP, an operating system for medium-to-large-scale mainframes
(2) SVPM console A console sub-system that handles operations, configuration control, and monitoring for multi-cluster systems
(3) All-in-one model A model limited to a single cluster. Planned for launch in the second half of fiscal
(4) Peripheral equipment Disk storage equipment, tape equipment, and console equipment

Lexus Design Award 2018 Grand Prix Winner Announced at Amazing 'LIMITLESS CO-EXISTENCE' Exhibition in Milan

TOKYO, Apr 17, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Lexus International today announced the Grand Prix winner of the Lexus Design Award 2018--Testing Hypotheticals by Extrapolation Factory (Christopher Woebken, Elliott P. Montgomery)--leading this prestigious international event to a pinnacle of excitement. Lexus Design Award 2018 drew a record 1319 entries from 68 countries under the theme of "CO-".

Lexus passionately believes in the power of design to change the world. This is why Lexus nurtures and celebrates up-and-coming designers who harness the power to shift perspectives, communicate ideas and stimulate the imagination to shape a better future.

"This year's winner permeates the current thinking about the role of design in our evolving and technologically shifting societies. Products played less of a role, and design education/teaching and thinking are at the forefront. How citizens and designers interact with products, processes and future is increasingly critical to mediating this influence of design in our increasingly future-orientated and technologically evolving world. The chosen design shows methods and techniques for engaging the public and designers in role playing possible futures and negotiating the influences of our technological world." said David Adjaye, Lexus Design Award 2018 judge and architect.

Elliott P. Montgomery of Extrapolation Factory commented, "It was truly fantastic, and the experience was incredible to have worked with our mentors Formafantasma. We could not have done this without the support of Lexus."

Since 2013, the Lexus Design Award has supported the next generation of designers from around the world. For our sixth year, 2018, the Award's theme is "CO-", a Latin prefix meaning with or together. Lexus believes that great design can ensure the harmonious coexistence of nature and society. In that sense, "CO-" is an approach that allows the brand to explore its true potential and that of the environment by creating new possibilities through collaboration, coordination and connection.

From among the wealth of "CO-" design submissions, our elite judging committee has selected 12 finalists, four to be prototyped and eight to be shown as display panels. These will be revealed to the international design community at Lexus' "LIMITLESS CO-EXISTENCE" exhibition, held 17-22 April 2018 in the Cavallerizze in Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci during Milan Design Week, the world's supreme design event.

For this exhibit, Lexus has called upon Japanese architect Sota Ichikawa to be the overall concept space designer. In the main installation, Ichikawa has used innovative methods to represent the ultimate experience of LIMITLESS CO-EXISTENCE. The Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept, earlier introduced at the North American International Auto Show, is also featured using Ichikawa's unique method.
