Yaris WRC Car 9
Toyota City, Japan, Jul 20, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team will take on the high-speed gravel roads of Rally Finland (July 26-29) with the clear aim of repeating its victory from last year. The rally is a home event for the team, which has a base close to the service park in Jyvaskyla, as well as for its Finnish drivers Jari-Matti Latvala and Esapekka Lappi, while Ott Tanak can also count on large support from neighbouring Estonia.

Rally Finland is the fastest event on the WRC calendar, played out on smooth gravel roads through the forests. The stages feature many large jumps and numerous crests, where accurate pace-notes and the positioning of the car are crucial. The high speeds mean that time differences are smaller than usual, and mistakes are more easily punished.

This year, Rally Finland features a heavily-revised route with almost 65 percent of it different to 2017, and nearly 40 percent on roads that are new to the rally. It begins on Thursday evening with the mixed-surface Harju stage in Jyvaskyla itself, before a total of 10 stages on Friday held mostly to the west. Saturday consists of eight stages to the south-east near Jamsa, totalling 142.86 kilometres. There are four further stages on Sunday, with Ruuhimaki as the rally-closing Power Stage.

Quotes

Tommi Makinen (Team Principal)
"This is an exciting event for everybody in the team, especially with the fantastic support that we receive from the fans in Finland, and I am sure that many will come from Estonia to cheer for Ott too. It was very special for us to win the rally last year: our aim is to do the same this time. We know that the Yaris WRC is strong on these types of roads, and all three of our drivers feel confident on these fast stages. I hope that they can all be fighting for the victory. We are very well-prepared, but I think we will face strong competition from our rivals."

Jari-Matti Latvala (Driver car 7)
"I am really looking forward to Rally Finland. It is a good opportunity to start the second half of the season in a positive way. I have always felt really good support on my home event, and this is even more the case now that we are driving a car that has been built here. I could really feel last year that everybody was behind the team and willing us on. One of the big challenges this year will be the changes to the route. I have driven some of the new roads before, but it was a long time ago and there are large sections that even I don't know. Therefore, I think it will actually create a more level playing field."

Ott Tanak (Driver car 8)
"Rally Finland is always one of my favourite events. It is quite a specific rally: really high-speed but also quite technical with the jumps. You really need to have some respect for the roads there. This year there will be a lot of new roads that we have not seen before, which will add to the challenge. I think we have had some really good preparation. As well as our pre-event testing, I took part in Rally Estonia last weekend and won it, which was quite nice in front of so many fans. I am sure that a few of them will go to Rally Finland as well, and I hope we can give them a good result there too."

Esapekka Lappi (Driver car 9)
"Rally Finland is always a special event and even more so after our victory last year. I am really looking forward to it. There is more pressure this year. From my side, I am expecting a good result and I think everyone else is too, so we really need to perform. I think it will be tougher to win it this time, though. The competition will be tougher, both from inside our team and from the other teams as well. The new stages will also create a big challenge. We know that our car will be competitive so the focus will be on making good pace-notes and finding a nice flow with the driving."

What happened last year?

Esapekka Lappi claimed the first win of his FIA World Rally Championship career and the second victory for Toyota since its return to the sport. Lappi was involved in a close battle with his team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala during the first half of the rally, before Latvala had to stop with an electrical issue. Juho Hanninen finished third to achieve the first double podium for the Yaris WRC.

NEC to Revise Operating Segments

$

TOKYO, Jul 20, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701) announced earlier this year a shift to a new organization structure effective as of April 1, 2018. In line with these structural changes, NEC's operating segments will be revised as of its consolidated financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019, being announced on July 31, 2018.

Major Revisions

1. Establishment of "Global" segment

To accelerate the growth of global business, NEC incorporated business divisions that are primarily tasked with expanding in global markets into the Global Business Unit effective April 1, 2018. This makes it possible to centralize business responsibilities and management authority, resulting in improved speed, concentrated investment in core businesses, and reduced costs. In line with this move, the Global Business Unit, which was previously included under the "Others", has been transferred to a newly established "Global" segment. The business divisions incorporated into the "Global" segment include those responsible for the software and service business for service providers throughout the world, the wireless solutions business, and the submarine systems business, which were previously included under the "Telecom Carrier" segment; the global unified communications business and the display solutions business, which were previously included under the "System Platform" segment; and the energy business, which was previously included under the "Others".

2. Renaming of "Telecom Carrier" segment

Additionally, in response to the continuing diversification of network needs as the IoT and 5G era approaches, NEC renamed its Telecom Carrier Business Unit to Network Services Business Unit effective April 1, 2018. This move was made in an effort to leverage the network strengths and capabilities cultivated in the telecom carrier market across to other industry sectors, including service providers, manufacturers, distribution and service industries, and governments. In line with this, the "Telecom Carrier" segment has been renamed "Network Services" segment.

Technology Seen to Create New Opportunities for Publishing

Speakers discuss the latest challenges and opportunities for the publishing industry in the digital age at an International Publishing Forum themed "The Global Trend of Publishing with the Application of Technology", held on 18 July at the HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair 2018.
AI, Digital Reading and Paid Knowledge in Focus at Hong Kong Book Fair Seminar

HONG KONG, Jul 20, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - Technology has changed the publishing industry more than anyone could have predicted just a decade ago. While this has led to many publishers leaving the market, it has also created exciting opportunities for others that are ready to adapt and embrace new technology, according to speakers at the International Publishing Forum, held on 18 July at the 29th edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair.

Sharing their views and experience at the forum themed "The Global Trend of Publishing with the Application of Technology" were Fang Jun, a knowledge services expert and Partner at KChain Lab; Natasha Leung, Senior Publishing Manager at publishing and education company Pearson Hong Kong; and Luo Li, Senior Vice-President at China Literature, the operator of a leading online literature platform in China. The forum included a Q&A session in the final half hour, moderated by Edmund Chan, Director of the Hong Kong Publishing Federation.

Paid Knowledge

Mr Fang discussed the potential for paid knowledge in the Internet age, specifically paid-subscriber online columns, which can be personalised, can be offered on audio channels, and can help build new online communities for people with common interests. "This is becoming a major market," he said. "Within only a year, some columnists have become very popular."

For a paid knowledge product to be successful, he said, it must lead online users to act and provide an interactive experience. An appropriate app can enable communication and sharing, which is what makes cinemas, gyms and cafes popular, said Mr Fang. People can watch films, work out and have a coffee at home, but they prefer to do so in a social environment. Similarly, many people enjoy sharing and discussing what they are reading, the speaker noted.

"In the past 50 years, Hollywood dominated the field of entertainment," concluded Mr Fang. "But in the future, Silicon Valley may take over."

Artificial Intelligence

Ms Leung, from Pearson Hong Kong, best-known for its English-learning textbooks from pre-primary to higher education under the Longman brand, described the company's collaboration with International Business Machines (IBM) and Microsoft in adapting artificial intelligence (AI) to English learning in higher learning and primary school, respectively.

Pearson's collaboration with IBM involves adapting IBM's AI engine, Watson, to Pearson's higher-education platform, she explained. Watson allows Pearson to create custom curricula to match each student's needs and ability and provide students with a virtual one-on-one tutor, which asks them questions about the content and gives hints or adapts the information for each student to guide them on their learning path. Teachers can also use the data provided to focus on individual students' needs.

Pearson's collaboration with Microsoft started with the successful launch of Longman English+, an English learning application (app) last year, integrating Longman's Welcome to English series and Microsoft's AI technology.

The WeChat-based interactive Longman English+ app being piloted this year on the Chinese mainland covers three main language areas: vocabulary, listening/speaking, and phonics. In the listening and speaking section, the students listen and then read a passage. They get an instant score and words that need improving are colour coded. They also participate in a scenario dialogue, with the app asking questions and the students answering. In the phonics section, the students read commonly confused sounds and receive personalised feedback. The scoring system uses a complex algorithm. "Pearson's vision is to become a lifelong learning partner offering personalised learning to help make a positive difference in people's lives," concluded Ms Leung.

Digital Reading

Mr Luo of China Literature focused on development trends in digital reading. "Changes in technology, particularly AI, will have a great influence on our reading habits," said Mr Luo. "The content has not changed. Reading is still the most fundamental demand in entertainment, and it satisfies people's desire for knowledge. But how audiences are targeted has changed."

Companies such as China Literature, a leader in the mainland's online literature field, are providing more personalised services than ever and the technology used to provide varied reading formats and target readers will continue to improve, he said. China Literature also provides services for authors. In the past, for example, writers of historical fiction may have had to travel across the world to visit places such as the British Museum to verify historical information, but now China Literature has accumulated a huge number of historical and other documents online to help make writing more efficient.

Mr Luo spoke of the marketing revolution that is taking place in the online literature field. Online literature can never compete with the entertainment industry regarding promotion expenditure, so players are using new technology, such as WeChat and key opinion leaders (KOLs). The KOL's can be a very efficient means of promotion because a popular KOL can reach up to 10,000 readers. They are also using virtual figures instead of celebrities to promote their books, reducing costs and giving instant feedback to followers through the use of AI.

With Big Data technology, platforms such as China Literature can analyse data from individual users and promote material based on their past reading experience, recommending content that is potentially attractive and even tailoring the introduction or welcome page of their website to their interests. This is similar to the technology social media and online shopping platforms are using. Big Data also provides China Literature with an analysis of the popularity of each novel by city, and by reader age and gender, for example.

Another way in which technology is affecting online literature is by providing greater interactivity. There are now more audio books, robot reading, virtual reality and augmented reality, which are enabling many new scenarios and many new types of reading experiences.

"The love of reading will continue as long as humans exist," concluded Mr Luo. "But the reading experience will change. We need to broaden our vision and include technology in this experience."

Correction: Rapala VMC Corporation's Half Year Report H1/2018: Sales and Profitability Grew from Last Year - Strategy Execution Showing Results

TOKYO, Jul 20, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - The stock exchange release had an incorrect growth percentage on the first page on earnings per share. The original statement stated "Earnings per share was 0.23 EUR (0.15), up 48%." and should have been "Earnings per share was 0.23 EUR (0.15), up 53%."

The full release is below.

Rapala VMC Corporation's Half Year Report H1/2018: Sales and Profitability Grew from Last Year - Strategy Execution Showing Results

January-June (H1) in brief:
- Net sales were 142.5 MEUR, up 1% from previous year (140.9). With comparable exchange rates sales were 6.5% higher than last year.
- Operating profit was 15.3 MEUR (11.0), up 39%.
- Comparable operating profit* was 15.2 MEUR (11.4), up 33%.
- Cash flow from operations was 5.9 MEUR (8.1).
- Gearing was 43.8% (46.8).
- Earnings per share was 0.23 EUR (0.15), up 53%.
- Full year guidance unchanged: Full year net sales with comparable FX rates expected to be above last year's level and comparable operating profit to exceed 15 MEUR.

President and CEO Jussi Ristimaki: "The first six months of the year developed well as our net sales and profitability grew from last year. The underlying consumer demand for our products continued to be strong in North America and after an exceptional year of 2017, our sales to retail grew strongly from last year. We were especially satisfied that Rapala lures was the biggest growth category.

Our profitability increase from last year was driven by strong sales in North America and successful performance improvement initiatives in France and Southeast Asia. Furthermore, production efficiency and footprint optimization of European lure manufacturing units contributed positively to profitability improvement. However, the Indonesian lure operations continued to have a negative profitability impact.

Execution of our strategy of improving profitability, lightening balance sheet and improving operational performance is progressing well. Ongoing lean projects and supply chain management initiatives continue to yield results. Consequently, our inventories decreased organically from last year. The strategic gradual shift from traditional marketing to digital marketing channels progressed. We opened successfully a content driven Rapala e-commerce site in Europe in May to enhance brand experience and to increase customer service. One of our strategic key priorities is to execute a profitability turnaround for the Indonesian lure operations. We have taken new actions during the year and we are determined to generate the profitability turnaround."

Enhancing India's flood preparedness and disaster prevention awareness

TOKYO, Jul 23, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu Limited and NPO SEEDS Asia(1) will conduct a field trial in India that utilizes a smartphone application, including augmented reality (AR) technology(2), to counter flooding and to raise citizens' disaster awareness. The field trial seeks to measure flood water levels and to map out and visualize conditions of urban flooding. The trial will be conducted in India's Varanasi, an urban area prone to flooding damage, between July and September 2018 when localized and torrential rains are frequent. In India, flood damage in cities due to sudden rain storms has become increasingly serious, demanding measures to accurately grasp the state of urban flooding and quickly deliver evacuation instructions. This field trial will use a smartphone app and the support of the staff and students of seven local schools(3) , students from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi city residents from whom the District Disaster Management Authority(4) has gained cooperation, and others, to measure the water level at 12 locations(5) at regular intervals when it is raining. Furthermore, in addition to immediately displaying the measurement data on a map so that evacuation instructions can be quickly issued to residents, the system will be evaluated for its effectiveness in collecting disaster prevention information that can be used as a map indicating flooding danger zones.
Background

Varanasi has seen average rainfalls in excess of 300 mm in the July, when rainfall volumes are heaviest, and as the city's terrain hinders drainage, damage done by frequent flooding has become a serious problem in the rainy season. In order to resolve these issues, Fujitsu and SEEDS Asia are jointly conducting a field trial which will leverage a smartphone app, including AR technology, to measure flood water levels in and Indian city and visualize urban flooding. The system will be evaluated for its effectiveness in collecting information that would be useful in disaster prevention, such as in issuing evacuation directions to residents.

Details of the Field Trial

1. Objective

To improve India's flood countermeasures and raise citizens' disaster prevention awareness by collecting and visualizing information useful in disaster prevention.

2. Period and Location

Trial Period: July 23, 2018 - September 30, 2018
Trial Location: 12 locations within Varanasi, Varanasi District, Uttar Pradesh, India

3. Roles

1. Fujitsu: Management of the field trial, development of the application, construction of the system, and visualization of measurement data. 2. SEEDS Asia: Support for flood water level measurement using smartphones by high school staff and students, among others.

4. Trial Summary

1. Water Level Measurement
The staff and students of seven local schools, employees of Varanasi's District Disaster Management Authority, and Banaras Hindu University students will use smartphones to measure water levels at 12 locations within Varanasi at regular intervals when it rains, using one of the following three methods depending on measurement location.

A. Visually check the water level against the tires of cars parked on streets, select one of three preset options based on the water level, and upload the data along with a picture, information on the location where the picture was taken, as well as comments.

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_Fujitsu72318Fig1.jpg

B. Visually check the water level against scales installed at schools, input the value shown on smartphones, and upload the data along with a picture.

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_Fujitsu72318Fig2.jpg

C. Use AR markers installed on locations such as school fences to overlay a scale onto the camera image on the smartphone, and digitize the water level by tapping on the surface of the water in the camera display, then upload the data along with a picture.

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_Fujitsu72318Fig3.jpg

2. Visualization of City Flooding
The system will display measurement results and three damage levels on a map.

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_Fujitsu72318Fig4.jpg

3. Evaluation of the System's Effectiveness as Information on Disaster Prevention
The trial will evaluate the effectiveness of the map visualizing the measurement data and the state of flooding in the city as a hazard map, for use in tasks such as issuing evacuation instructions to residents.

(1) SEEDS Asia A non-profit organization working on reducing disaster risks and environmental problems in Asia. This NPO is headed by Professor Rajib Shaw of the Graduate School of Media and Governance at Keio University in Kobe Japan.
(2) AR technology Augmented Reality (AR) technology expands and enhances human senses by overlaying digital information obtained utilizing ICT onto information gained from human senses (reality).

Toyota to Bring Latest Technologies, Toyota Production System to Support Mobility at the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020

$

Universal access, electrified technologies including fuel cell technology, automated driving, mobility as a service, connected mobility, and TPS-based transportation support are among the technologies and services that will give officials, athletes and spectators an experience of tomorrow's "mobility for all" and support the sustainable and smooth operation of "the most innovative Games in history."

TOKYO, Jul 23, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - With two years to go until the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, Toyota today outlined the mobility concept that will become the basis for its Tokyo 2020 Games activities, organized around three main pillars : (1) Mobility for all; (2) Sustainability, centering on the realization of a hydrogen society, with the environment and safety as core principles; and (3) Transportation support of staff, media and athletes between Games venues using a Toyota Production System (TPS)-based system.

Toyota believes that giving unprecedented access to people including those with impairments brings the notion of mobility back to its most fundamental meaning: the freedom to move.

In collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, the company would like to help make Tokyo, the first host city to welcome both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games for the second time, a global showcase for "Mobility for All," contributing to making those Games the most innovative in history.

"The freedom of being mobile is at the heart of being able to participate in society," said Toyota President Akio Toyoda. "If someone wants to take on a challenge and moving is what is preventing them from doing so, Toyota would like to help tackle that problem. We want mobility to be a possibility, not an obstacle. By being involved with the Olympics, the Paralympics and the Special Olympics Games, I hope that Toyota will come to respect everyone's uniqueness and embrace diversity. Once that is realized, we will finally be able to take a step closer to our goal of "mobility for all" and ensure, like athletes show us every day, that being mobile equals having a chance to make one's dreams come true."

Toyota became the first worldwide mobility partner of the IOC and the IPC in 2015 with the aim to contribute to "creating a peaceful society without discrimination through sports" and "a commitment to creating a sustainable society through mobility". Additionally, from last year, Toyota launched its first global corporate initiative, "Start Your Impossible," to bring people together and contribute to a society where all people can challenge what is possible. The product categories covered by the Toyota sponsorship are: vehicles, mobility services and certain transportation and mobility support products (including robots). At Tokyo 2020, Toyota's support will be deployed in three main areas:

1. "Mobility for All"
Taking on the challenge to provide the freedom to move to everyone including those with impairments through the Tokyo 2020 games, Toyota will:

- Showcase the future of automated driving as the ultimate "mobility for all", demonstrating how automated vehicles could one day offer the freedom to move everyone. Verification testing and demonstrations using SAE Level 4 automation, where all driving functions are performed by the vehicle in certain well-defined areas of operation, will take place in the Tokyo Water Front City and Haneda areas in Tokyo
- Introduce a new type of moving experience through a demonstration of "TOYOTA Concept-i," a car that recognizes drivers' emotions and preferences and can make conversation using artificial intelligence (AI)
- Support transportation services for athletes and affiliated guests around the Athlete's Village with e-Palette, the next generation battery electric vehicle specially designed for Mobility as a Service (MaaS)
- Provide its existing assistive vehicles lineup, WelCab, as well as new personal mobility devices and support for last-mile mobility needs.

Toyota also hopes its new JPN Taxi, introduced in October 2017, will be popular around Tokyo to welcome visitors from around the world, including people using wheelchairs.

Provide personal mobility solutions such as the Toyota i-ROAD as well as a standing-riding device to support working staff at the Games, such as security officers.

2. Sustainability, with the environment and safety as core principles, centered on the realization of a hydrogen society

Toyota plans to contribute to sustainable Games by providing a fleet of over 3,000 passenger vehicles for official use and others, equipped with the latest environmental and safety technologies to minimize environmental burden and traffic accidents.

- In order to make Tokyo 2020 a turning point in realizing a hydrogen society, Toyota will support the Games and their legacy with a large number of zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) such as the Mirai sedan for official use. In addition, the Fuel Cell Bus "Sora," as well as Fuel Cell forklifts made and sold by Toyota Industries Corporation, will help support the Games.
- In addition to FCEV, the latest Hybrid Electric / Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV / PHEV) from the Toyota and Lexus line-ups, as well as new Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), will mainly compose the rest of the fleet. In total, the company and the Games' organisers aim to achieve the lowest emissions target level of any official vehicle fleet used at the Olympic and Paralympic Games with the use of these official vehicles.
- Vehicles for official use will be equipped with the latest active safety technology packages such as Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) and Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+), as well as Parking Support Brake (PKSB), a technology to help prevent collisions that primarily occur in parking lots and garages.
- In addition to official vehicles above, some vehicles will feature Highway Teammate, an automated driving safety function that allows hands-off driving on highways (SAE Level 2 automation).

3. Games official transportation support using the Toyota Production System
It is estimated that 15 million visitors will join Tokyo's 15 million citizens during the Games period. While the Tokyo Metropolitan Area will surely live up to its reputation as one of the most efficient cities for urban mobility, Toyota will support the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee to help ensure a safe and effective transportation between venues for those using the official fleet. To do this, the company will provide the knowledge it has garnered over years of experience applying the Toyota Production System.

- Toyota will also support the movement of official staff and athletes to and from events with the latest information and connected technologies, such as vehicle Data Communication Modules connected to its Mobility Service Platform, to provide safe, secure, and smooth transportation of people and freight during the games.
- Toyota will also support on-the-ground vehicle dispatching and transportation operations from an efficiency standpoint.

Cities around the world currently face challenges surrounding mobility, having to solve issues ranging from traffic congestion to air pollution, traffic accidents, and access for people with impairments. Starting from Tokyo 2020 and through Beijing 2022 and Paris 2024, Toyota is hoping to help tackle these challenges in collaboration with stakeholders around the world, and contribute to creating legacy to realize a sustainable mobility society.

Toyota will disclose more of its plans and contributions, including those related to new mobility products and solutions, moving forward between now and Tokyo 2020.

About Toyota's Top Olympic Partnership and Worldwide Paralympic Partnership

Toyota became the official worldwide mobility partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Committees in 2015 for the 2017-2024 period, covering the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 (Korea) and Beijing 2022 (China) and the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020 (Japan) and Paris 2024 (France). As a partner, Toyota aims to encourage creating a peaceful society without discrimination through sports and a commitment to creating a sustainable society through mobility. In this spirit, Toyota also became the Global Partner of the Special Olympics International in 2017. Toyota's values of continuous improvement and respect for people are shared by The Olympic and Paralympic Games, which brings together the entire world in friendship and solidarity to celebrate the highest realization of human potential. Toyota believes that mobility goes beyond cars; it is about overcoming challenges and making dreams come true, which is encapsulated in the company's "Start Your Impossible" corporate initiative and is the basis for its transformation from a car company to a mobility company. When you are free to move, anything is possible.

NEC's demo system for intrusion detection solutions
TOKYO, Jul 23, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701) today announced the provision of a demo system for intrusion detection solutions utilizing Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), a network architecture concept for next-generation communications, to DOCOMO 5G Open Lab Yotsuya, a 5G technology verification center run by NTT DOCOMO, INC.

In the 5G era, flexible mobile networks that are tailored to a wide range of advanced services will be required in order to keep pace with the progress of digital transformation. MEC optimizes and accelerates communications by providing a data processing function that is close to a network's edge. In the future, this is expected to be widely used as a network architecture that satisfies the requirements for a variety of services.

NEC provided this demo system to allow companies and groups participating in the DOCOMO 5G Open Partner Program to understand and experience MEC and other 5G network technologies. The demo system consists of NEC's virtualized Evolved Packet Core (vEPC), Context-aware Service Controller, which dynamically optimizes the allocation of network resources, as well as NEC's Image Analysis and Behavior Detection System, which automatically detects behavior in real time, such as intrusions and object abandonment, with a high degree of accuracy.

The demo system also utilizes MEC to implement the optimum allocation of network band frequencies according to need. Under regular conditions, the system sends low-definition images from monitoring cameras in order to reduce the consumption of network bandwidth. However, when the Image Analysis and Behavior Detection System identify suspicious activity, the Context-aware Service Controller instructs the vEPC to expand network bandwidth and to transmit high-definition images to those monitoring the system.

Fujitsu Launches Latest Version of its VPS Digital Production Preparation Tool

$

TOKYO, Jul 24, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu today announced that it will begin selling the latest version of Fujitsu Manufacturing Industry Solution VPS(1), the V15L20 globally. The solution, a digital production preparation tool developed by Digital Process Ltd., delivers comprehensive support for product assembly processes. Like its predecessor, the V15L20 manages 3D model-derived data, including information on the procedures and workloads involved in assembly work. At the same time, this new version also enables the consolidation and display of a wider array of production data, such as video images of the work of actual machinery and inspection sheets on task performance. With increasingly diverse production methods and ways to approach manufacturing data, Fujitsu continues to empower customers with digital technology that supports production preparation work.

Background

In recent years, the front lines of the manufacturing industry have witnessed a demand for support for small-lot production of a variety of different products, in keeping with the accelerating diversification of customer needs. To maintain product quality in these circumstances, it remains crucial to share detailed and accurate data relating to production from the design stage through the production process, including information ranging from production drawings to assembly procedure. Despite this, tasks related to producing and managing relevant documents, including work instruction manuals and parts lists, continue to impose a tremendous burden. To address this challenge, Fujitsu has been providing its VPS digital production preparation tool to consolidate and display a variety of production-related data using 3D digital data for products created with CAD. This data includes information relating to the tools used and the workload required for assembly work, as well as points to be careful of in the work, in addition to production drawings and assembly procedures. Because even novice workers can understand assembly procedures visually with animation, the use of this tool has supported quality improvements and greater efficiencies in customers' production preparation work.

Features of the New Version

The latest version of Fujitsu's VPS tool enables video images taken of the actual work and documents for inputting task performance or inspection results to be incorporated into animations of the assembly procedures and reproduced and displayed(2), as well as updated. This makes it easier for workers to understand the assembly procedures while also enabling work records to be put into documents almost instantaneously. Without preparing any paperwork, workers can smoothly access the required information when needed on their PCs or tablets, and references and updates can be made, supporting greater efficiency in tasks like confirming the shapes of products and production flows. When confirming the production flow, the window size and layout for displaying the assembly parts configuration tree diagram can be easily recalled, with multiple patterns saved(3). The VPS tool also accommodates integrated and cut-away displays for each window, as well as multi-displays. Display windows can be easily customized to make them easy to use for each system user.

Sales Target

Sales of 5.0 billion yen by the end of fiscal 2020 (Fujitsu's fiscal year ends on March 31).

The 29th Hong Kong Book Fair concluded today, having welcomed a record 1.04 mil visitors during its seven-day run at the HKCEC.

The Sports and Leisure Expo was well received and enjoyed by visitors, including a large number of families, while many exhibitors found their on-site promotions effective.
-- Per Capita Book Fair Spend in at HK$810
-- Sports and Leisure Expo also Draws to a Close

HONG KONG, Jul 24, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - The 29th Hong Kong Book Fair and the second Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo, organised by the HKTDC, concluded today with the seven-day Book Fair attracting a record number 1.04 million visitors. Apart from purchasing their favourite books, readers also participated in various cultural events while the on-site seminars and Art Gallery exhibitions received enthusiastic responses.

"The Hong Kong Book Fair continued to receive great support from readers this year, attracting more than one million visitors during its seven-day run," said HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau. "Apart from purchasing books to their liking, readers also keenly participated in on-site cultural events. In particular, the International Cultural Village, the Art Gallery and the various cultural performances drew crowds of visitors enjoying this cultural feast together."

He noted the theme of the year - "Romance Literature" - and selection of 10 featured writers had been made collectively by the Hong Kong Book Fair Cultural Events Advisory Panel after detailed discussions. These 10 representative authors were selected at the same time by the Advisory Panel so that the fair could introduce a mix of writers and works from different periods to arouse readers' interest in the genre and achieve the fair's objective of promoting reading culture. The participation of budding authors could also help pass on the legacy of romance literature, Mr Chau added.

Elvin Lee, Chairman of the Hong Kong Publishing Federation, said: "The Hong Kong Book Fair is a mega event in town. It is a big and increasingly diversified cultural platform. We were delighted to see authors and works from different eras featured at the Art Gallery's 'Theme of the Year' exhibition. Alongside familiar big names in romance literature, the exhibition featured a number of brilliant new-generation writers. Most have found fame by writing bestselling romantic novels, while one of them has gained popularity after starting out as an online author. This mix helped engage the interest of readers of different ages and tastes, while encouraging new authors, which could in turn promote reading and creation."

While the Book Fair and the concurrent HKTDC Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo were well received by local visitors, they also appealed to booklovers from overseas. According to an on-site survey, over 9% of total visitors were from outside Hong Kong.

Cultural Events Attract 300,000+ Attendees
During the fair period, about 310 cultural events were held on-site, including "Theme of the Year: Romance Literature" seminars, renowned writers' seminars, International Cultural Village performances, noted writers' reading sessions and cultural performances at the Art Gallery. A total of more than 640 events were held in connection with the Book Fair, including activities that took place under the month-long "Cultural July" citywide campaign, drawing more than 300,000 attendees.

Average Per Capita Spending at Book Fair: HK$810
The HKTDC commissioned an independent market research agency to conduct an on-site survey during the Book Fair, interviewing more than 820 visitors. Most respondents reported having bought printed books over the past year, spending HK$1,412 on average. The average per capita spending expected at the Book Fair was found to be HK$810. Most respondents were drawn to the Book Fair by new releases (79%), followed by discounted items (41%).

Most Popular Genres: Fiction, Literature and Travel Books
The survey also revealed the visitors' reading habits. About 98% of respondents said they had read a printed book in the past month, spending an average of 22 hours reading, similar to last year's findings. The most popular genres were fiction (64%), literature (39%) and travel books (33%). Other popular genres included self-improvement, language study, religion and philosophy. The survey also found that 60% of respondents have read e-books in the past month, spending an average of 20 hours reading.

Promoting Book Donations and Waste Recycling
Book collection sites were set up again this year for exhibitors to donate unwanted books, which go to voluntary service organisations for distribution to individuals or organisations in need. Large recycling bins were also placed at the venue while exhibitors were reminded to recycle unwanted books and materials. The Hong Kong Book Fair mobile app was launched this year, allowing readers to receive the latest information about the fair -- including a floor plan -- anytime, anywhere. This initiative reduces the need to print exhibition-related materials and addresses environmental concerns.

Cultural July - The Joy of Reading Continues
While the 29th edition of the Book Fair closed today, visitors can still view the video recordings of about 100 seminars on the fair website and the HKTDC's online video channels. In its seventh year, the "Cultural July" citywide campaign continues until the end of this month. Highlight activities include art screenings, experimental theatre shows, exhibitions and seminars. For details, please visit the "Cultural July" website.

Sports and Leisure Expo Well Attended
The second Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo featured over 130 exhibitors showcasing a broad selection of sports and leisure products and services from more than 160 brands. Over 50 on-site events organised by the HKTDC, as well as other activities organised by exhibitors, were enthusiastically received, creating a vibrant atmosphere at the fairground. Sharing sessions by local star athletes were also well attended.

NTT DOCOMO: Success with 5G Communications Using "Vehicle Glass Mounted Antenna" for 5G Connected Car

- World's first 28 GHz band compatible antenna achieves 8 Gbps super high-speed communications with high-speed vehicle -

TOKYO, Jul 25, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - NTT DOCOMO, INC. and AGC Inc. achieved the world's first1 8 Gbps 5G communications with a fast-moving vehicle equipped with "vehicle glass mounted antennas" (On-Glass Antennas) in a field trial conducted in conjunction with Ericsson Japan.

The 5G 28 GHz band compatible On-Glass Antennas used in the field trial were designed and developed by AGC. The antennas are not easily seen from the exterior and can be installed on glass surfaces without affecting the vehicle design.

Radio waves in the 28 GHz band have a large propagation loss and have difficulty propagating over long distances. By installing an On-Glass Antenna on the vehicle, radio waves above 6 GHz can be transmitted and received using the "beam forming function", which concentrates radio waves in a specific direction, and the "MIMO function", which improves communication speed by simultaneously transmitting different data from multiple antennas. This allows stable, high-speed communications even for vehicles in operation.

For this field trial, 5G high-speed communications using both the beam forming function and the MIMO function was performed with a vehicle equipped with On-Glass Antennas. The trial was held at the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. While moving at high speeds of approximately 100 km/h, a maximum communication speed of 8 Gbps was achieved, and a maximum of 11 Gbps was achieved at a speed of approximately 30 km/h, confirming that high-speed in-vehicle communications in the 28 GHz band can be achieved by utilizing On-Glass Antennas.

DOCOMO, AGC, and Ericsson Japan will continue working toward utilizing 5G in various environments including in-vehicle communication modules, etc., aiming to see 5G connected cars become a reality.

Field trial outline and results

The trial was carried out at a straight section of test course approximately 2.2 km long at the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management. 5G data communications were carried out using the 28 GHz band between the moving test vehicle equipped with a 5G mobile station to which several On-Glass Antennas were connected and three 5G base stations set up along the sides of the course.

For this trial, a total of eight On-Glass Antenna elements were installed in the test vehicle on the windshield, both side windows, and rear window, so that radio waves could be received from various directions.

By utilizing the On-Glass Antennas to receive signals in combination with the MIMO function and the beam forming function with up to four beams supporting vertical and horizontal polarization, 5G high-speed communications were realized, with up to 8 Gbps at a moving speed of approximately 100 km/h, and 11 Gbps at a moving speed of approximately 30 km/h.

- Will leverage PARONYM's TIG technology for new video-content experiences -

TOKYO, Jul 25, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that it invested in PARONYM, INC., a startup developer of TIG, a next-generation interactive video technology, on July 6. The investment was made through NTT DOCOMO Ventures, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of DOCOMO.

TIG enables consumers to tap an item in a video, such as a pair of stylish dark glasses worn by a model, quickly store the item by simply pulling it to the side of their smartphone's screen, and then obtain information about the product with incredible ease. TIG also enables marketing companies to manage three-dimensional metadata in the video content, collect audience measurement data--such as number of taps, where people touch on screens, page transitions and playback time--and to visually analyze the data using a heat map. TIG's specialized authoring tools can be used to set metadata in video content without requiring technical expertise.

Until now, video content effectiveness generally has been measured with indices, such as number of views and VTR (View Through Rate). TIG, however, enables consumer interests to be visualized without having to interrupt their viewing experiences, thereby allowing information to be acquired more easily for incorporation in video-based marketing initiatives.

Through its investment in PARONYM, DOCOMO looks forward to leveraging TIG to provide consumers with highly personalized video-entertainment experiences and related services. In the future, DOCOMO will build on its synergies with PARONYM to expand the utilization of TIG into areas such as video content related to concerts and sporting events.
