TOKYO, Oct 12, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Eisai Co., Ltd. has announced that the National Medical Products Administration of China has accepted for review a New Drug Application for Eisai's antiepileptic drug (AED) perampanel (generic name, product name: Fycompa) as an adjunctive treatment for partial onset seizures in epilepsy patients 12 years of age and older. This NDA is the first to be submitted for perampanel in China.

This application for perampanel in partial onset seizures in China was based on the results of three Phase III clinical studies conducted mainly in Europe and the United States, as well as the results of a Phase III clinical study (Study 335) conducted mainly in Asia including China and Japan.

In China it is estimated that there are approximately 9 million patients with epilepsy, with approximately 60% being affected by partial-onset seizures, and 40% of these patients with partial-onset seizures require adjunctive treatment.(1) As approximately 30% of patients with epilepsy are unable to control their seizures with currently available AEDs,(2) this is a disease with significant unmet medical need.

Perampanel is a first-in-class AED discovered at Eisai's Tsukuba Research Laboratories. Administered orally once-daily, it is a highly selective, noncompetitive AMPA receptor antagonist that reduces neuronal hyperexcitation associated with seizures by targeting glutamate activity at AMPA receptors on postsynaptic membranes.

Perampanel has been approved in over 55 countries around the world as an adjunctive treatment for partial-onset seizures with or without secondarily generalized seizures in patients with epilepsy 12 years of age and older. In addition, perampanel has been approved in over 50 countries around the world as an adjunctive treatment for primary generalized tonic clonic seizures in patients with epilepsy 12 years of age and older. In the United States, perampanel is also indicated for monotherapy and adjunctive use in the treatment of partial-onset seizures with or without secondarily generalized seizures in patients with epilepsy 4 years of age and older.

Eisai considers neurology including epilepsy, a therapeutic area of focus, and is striving to deliver perampanel to patients in China as soon as possible. In pursuit of our mission to provide "seizure freedom" to a greater number of patients living with epilepsy, Eisai seeks to address the diverse needs of, as well as increasing the benefits provided to, patients with epilepsy and their families.

About perampanel (generic name, product name: Fycompa)

Perampanel is a first-in-class AED discovered and developed by Eisai. With epileptic seizures being mediated by the neurotransmitter glutamate, the agent is a highly selective, noncompetitive AMPA receptor antagonist that reduces neuronal hyperexcitation associated with seizures by targeting glutamate activity at AMPA receptors on postsynaptic membranes. Perampanel is available in tablet form to be taken once daily orally at bedtime. In addition, an oral suspension formulation has been approved in the United States.

Perampanel is currently approved in more than 55 countries and territories, including the United States, Japan, in Europe and in Asia as adjunctive treatment for partial-onset seizures (with or without secondarily generalized seizures) in patients with epilepsy 12 years of age and older. An application seeking approval for use in the treatment of partial-onset seizures has now been filed in China. In addition, perampanel has been approved in more than 50 countries, including the United States, Japan, in Europe and in Asia for treatment as an adjunctive therapy for primary generalized tonic clonic seizures in patients with epilepsy 12 years of age and older. In the United States, perampanel is also indicated for monotherapy and adjunctive use in the treatment of partial-onset seizures (with or without secondarily generalized seizures) in patients with epilepsy 4 years of age and older.

Furthermore, Eisai is conducting a global Phase III clinical study (Study 338) for the agent in patients with seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In Japan and Europe, Eisai is conducting a Phase III study in pediatric patients with epilepsy (Study 311). Additionally, a Phase III study of perampanel as monotherapy in untreated patients with partial-onset seizures 12 years of age and older is being conducted in Japan (Study 342).

About Epilepsy

Epilepsy affects approximately 3.4 million people in the United States, 1 million people in Japan, 6 million people in Europe, 9 million people in China, and approximately 60 million people worldwide. As approximately 30% of patients with epilepsy are unable to control their seizures with currently available AEDs,(2) this is a disease with significant unmet medical need.

Epilepsy is broadly categorized by seizure type, with partial-onset seizures accounting for approximately 60% of epilepsy cases and generalized seizures accounting for approximately 40%. In a partial-onset seizure, an abnormal electrical disturbance occurs in a limited area of the brain, and may subsequently spread throughout the brain, becoming a generalized seizure (known as a secondarily generalized seizure). In a generalized seizure, abnormal electrical disturbances occur throughout the brain, and can be followed by a loss of consciousness or physical symptoms manifested throughout the whole body.

Daikin and Hitachi Start Joint Demonstration Aiming to Digitalize Quality Control Know-How in Reaction Process of Chemical Manufacturing

Overview of the analysis and digitalization of the reaction process of chemicals
Daikin's Yodogawa Plant where the joint demonstration in the reaction process of chemicals will be conducted
Second Step of Collaborative Creation Utilizing Image Analysis Technology Following Brazing Process for Air Conditioners

TOKYO, Oct 12, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Daikin Industries, Ltd. (TSE: 6367) and Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE: 6501) announced today, as of October 2018, that they will start a joint demonstration to digitalize quality control know-how in the reaction process of chemical manufacturing, especially in fluorochemicals, at Daikin Yodogawa Plant (Settsu, Osaka Prefecture), as the second step in their collaborative creation. For this joint demonstration, Daikin and Hitachi will introduce a system that generates alarms for workers to ensure appropriate quality control instantaneously. Hitachi's image analysis technology of "Lumada" enables to visualize variety of status in reaction processes such as liquid foaming status and color change, all of which were previously checked visually by workers at certain designated points. This digitalization technology extracts the operating status data instantaneously and consecutively which leads to maintaining quality control and improving efficiency in the future.

In recent years, given the diversification of customers' needs, rapid progress of digitalization, and intensifying global competition, there is a need for hi-mix low-volume production that meet customers' individual needs. In small-scale chemical production processes are difficult to be sensed using general instrumentation devices(1), quality is controlled by monitoring the production status with visual checks by workers at designated points. However, as the quality of finished products can vary even under the same manufacturing conditions-such as liquid amount and time-quality control requires considering factors that can be seen in liquid foaming state, color change, and other reaction states while the liquid is stirred, so as to improve the consistency of quality. Another issue, however, is that the frequency with which manufacturing processes can be monitored is restrained by the need to maintain productivity.

Daikin and Hitachi advance their collaborative creation to achieve a next-generation production model utilizing advanced IoT. The first step of collaborative creation is to develop the "Brazing Skills Training Support System" that digitalizes brazing skills by using Hitachi's image analysis technology. Brazing skills requires advanced skills and expertise within the manufacturing process of air conditioners. The system commenced operation at Daikin's Shiga Plant from October 2017(2). Daikin is expanding applications to other locations worldwide.

As the second step in their collaborative creation, Daikin and Hitachi have also applied Hitachi's image analysis technology and examined the digitalization of quality control know-how at the manufacturing process of fluorochemicals at Daikin's Yodogawa Plant. From the perspective of the "4Ms"; "Man," "Machine," "Material" and "Method," they have collected the time-series numerical values and image data of the reaction statuses of chemicals (e.g., liquid color and foaming) and equipment operation statuses (e.g., temperature and rotating speed) using cameras and sensors. By converting the image data to numeric data and correlating them with quality, it has become possible to establish quantitative criteria that affect the quality of finished products. Because of the criteria, the two companies gained the prospects of reducing defective rate and improving productivity and will begin a joint demonstration within the fluorochemicals manufacturing process.

In this demonstration, Daikin and Hitachi will introduce the system on-site to verify the effects. In the future, the system will be enhanced by adding new factors of logic through monitoring and analyzing human-decision. This system will contribute to digitalize the manufacturing know-how of skilled, expert workers and to establish new manufacturing process in the future.

Based on the results of this joint demonstration, Daikin and Hitachi will establish the system to evaluate and analyzes different reaction statuses in the chemical manufacturing. The system also intends to improve quality and productivity, as well as digitalization of the know-how of skilled, expert workers.

Hitachi is expanding its image analysis technology of Lumada to manufacturing industries such as food and pharmaceuticals, as well as to chemical industries worldwide.

(1) A series of devices and systems that measure and control the production state of specific products
(2) Daikin and Hitachi Embark on Collaborative Creation Aiming to Establish a Next-Generation Production Model Utilizing IoT to Support Skill Transfer from Expert Workers (announced on September 26 2017)

- All standards required by China cleared in functional, safety confirmation, and performance tests
- 1,250 MW high-quality turbine generation facilities to contribute to stable energy supplies

YOKOHAMA, Japan, Oct 12, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS) announces that the steam turbine generation facilities supplied for the Sanmen nuclear power plant in China have cleared all necessary functional, safety confirmation, and performance tests, with a signing ceremony held on October 11. The turbine generators being used at the nuclear power station are MHPS' mainstay model with a 54-inch last stage blade. These systems have a proven track record at power generation facilities in Japan, and are now being used in full-fledged operations in China for the first time. The Sanmen Nuclear Power Station is the world's first commercial 3rd Generation 1,250 megawatt class pressurized water reactor (AP1000).

The Sanmen nuclear power plant was built by Sanmen Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. in Sanmen, Zhejiang Province, south of Shanghai. The facility comprises two units, each with an output of 1,250 megawatts. MHPS provided six low-pressure turbines, two high-pressure turbines, the main valves and other equipment for the two units within the facility. Harbin Electric Corporation handled the turbine casing, heat exchanger, auxiliary equipment and other equipment, while Mitsubishi Electric and Harbin Electric each supplied one of the two generators. The designs for the turbine, heat exchanger, and auxiliary equipment were all provided by MHPS through a technology transfer.

The Sanmen Unit 1 began fuel loading at the end of April 2018, and reached 100% output in mid-August. After clearing performance tests and the 168 hours of continuous demonstrated operation additionally required by the Chinese government, the plant began commercial operation. The power generating unit, as noted previously, is the world's first commercial AP1000. MHPS assigned engineers on a long-term basis to conduct prior verification tests with the nuclear reactor and turbine sides, as well as confirmation tests on site. The meticulous project management and close communication led to a smooth start of commercial operations.
Going forward, MHPS will continue to contribute to resolving the global issues of stable energy supplies, economic development, and reducing the environmental load by providing steam turbines for safe, reliable, and high-quality nuclear power generation facilities.

Vincent Wong, Associate Director, Consulting, Deloitte China, discusses why enterprises around the world will adopt AI and how senior executives view artificial intelligence (AI) in their companies now and in the future.
Theme: "AI Empowerment - Grow without Limits"

HONG KONG, Oct 14, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become more than a buzzword in recent years. It is being used to make enormous advances in productivity and enhance the customer experience in industries as diverse as manufacturing, banking, insurance and retail. The 13 Oct morning session of the Symposium on Innovation and Technology, under the theme "AI Empowerment - Grow without Limits", held during the 38th HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition), focused on how AI can empower organisations, how to deal with some of the challenges associated with AI implementation, and how AI will affect the employment picture.

In his opening remarks, Nicolas Yang, Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), highlighted some of the HKSAR Government's recent initiatives to promote and develop AI in Hong Kong, noting that the government has made AI one of its key focuses.

AI Is Here - Smarter Together

In his talk, Vincent Wong, Associate Director, Consulting, Deloitte China, discussed why enterprises around the world will adopt AI and how senior executives view AI in their companies now and in the future. Deloitte is one of the world's largest professional services companies, with 263,000 professionals in fields such as accounting, risk advice, compliance, legal services, and management consulting. Deloitte has three fintech labs, one of which is in Hong Kong, where the firm helps companies develop AI strategies, such as natural language processing (NLP) Chatbots and other analytical tools.

"AI is becoming part of our daily lives," said Mr Wong. "And it is going to transform industries." He shared some interesting results of a survey of 250 senior executives to provide a snapshot of what has been happening in the past 12 months. Some 87% of respondents said AI is important or very important for enhancing their product and service offerings, 92% said it was helping their internal processes, and 57% said AI will help their companies run and transform faster than their competitors in the next two to three years.

Mr Wong defined AI as "an umbrella of collective technologies that predict patterns and give insights that humans cannot provide in the same time frame". He divided AI into several categories: computer vision, machine learning, NLP, robotic processing automation (RPA), and speech recognition and optimisation.

Companies are deploying AI in a wide range of industries, he said. In back-office operations, they are using RPA for record keeping and matching work in finance and accounting, and in the legal field to help review contracts and to assist with compliance and fraud issues. In human resources, companies use AI to source the best candidate for a position. AI is used in information systems to predict hardware malfunctions and plan preventive maintenance, and it is used in the supply chain to identify patterns and show how the supply chain can be adjusted for maximum efficiency. AI is used in sales operations and in customer service, from Chatbots handling simple enquiries to those that identify high-risk or high-potential conversations.

Regarding AI's effect on employment, Mr Wong said, "AI will reduce the workload, but it will help business productivity, which will lead to hiring more people."

Mr Wong also focused on how to develop an AI culture within the organisation. "Learn about it. Use it. Learn from experts. Focus on change, not just cost-cutting," he suggested.

In deciding who should lead the AI programmes, he said it depended on the company's priorities: the CFO is often the ideal choice for leadership and vision, although the programmes could be led by the CTO if the focus is on creating new services for clients, by the CIO if improving processes internally is key, or by the COO if what is required is a strong sense of data and relationships, and resource allocation.

Interestingly, only 17% of senior executives in Deloitte's survey said they understood the concepts and application of AI in their company, but 83% said they immediately saw substantial benefits when applying AI projects and said the financial benefits grew with experience.

Mr Wong concluded with three key pieces of advice: (1) jump in now, take a hands-on approach and be an early adopter of AI; (2) focus on change, not just cost-cutting; and (3) learn about AI and work with an expert.

Human-Centred Design in an Artificial Intelligence World

Laine Mann, Global Congress Lead of Pfizer's Global Commercial Operations, discussed the methodology of design thinking, focusing on five pillars: empathising, defining, ideating, prototyping and testing.

Emphasising involves interviewing colleagues or clients with open-ended questions to draw out their stories. "Walk in their shoes. Learn how they feel, what they think and what they are doing," she suggested. "Continue to ask 'why' until you identify their challenges or problems." She used the heart-warming experience of Doug Dietz, the design leader of the MRI machine at GE Healthcare, as an example of the importance of empathy in design. When Doug watched a frail young patient approach his stark, all-white scanner, crying with fear, it triggered a personal crisis that changed his perspective on design forever. His subsequent efforts to see the machine through the eyes of a young child resulted in a pilot programme that changed the MRI suite into a children's adventure story - a pirate ship or adventure ride - with the young patient in a starring role, thus dramatically reducing the number of patients that had to be sedated and increasing patient satisfaction scores.

The defining stage involved "defining the customers' pain points and challenges to determine how problems can be solved in a unique way," said Ms Mann. The key is to frame the problem in the right way, she added. The ideating stage involves brainstorming - developing the broadest range of possibilities, including wild outcomes, to identify solutions.

Regarding the prototype and testing stages, Ms Mann said, "Build to think, test to learn." The prototype doesn't have to be perfect, but "it allows you to see what the future looks like," she pointed out. At the testing stage, the prototype is taken to the customer "to learn, not to validate". Depending on what is learned, the process may go back to the defining or prototype stage, added Ms Mann.

The Future Is Now -- Empowering Industry through AI

"AI is used in virtually every industry," remarked Jesse Lin, Vice President of SenseTime, which is said to be the world's most valued AI start-up. "It (AI) is becoming a general-purpose technology."

She noted that computers were developed about 80 years ago, and neural networks about 30 years ago. In contrast, deep learning was first applied to facial recognition only in 2014. This deep learning depends on three key elements: (1) algorithms, (2) computer power, since you need CPU power to train models, and (3) data, which is the most important element allowing AI.

Founded in 2014 by the head of the Multimedia Lab at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, SenseTime focuses on basic research, specialising in deep learning and computer vision.

Ms Lin reviewed the wide range of verticals her company works with, in which AI+ is now being used extensively: smartphones, mobile internet, smart retail, fintech, smart city and autonomous driving.

In smart retail, companies such as Ikea and Walmart build a customer profile using facial recognition both to enhance the customer experience and to help prevent store losses. The system can recognise gender, age, time spent in each section, sequence of store movement and more to learn more about each customer's interests to provide a better shopping experience. SenseTime is also involved in developing unmanned stores on the Chinese mainland, in which a computer monitor checks which items are removed from shelves, and the customers ask for permission to deduct the purchases from their e-wallet.

In AU+ Fintech, ID verification is made through Sense ID. The customers take a photo with their mobile phone for permission for bank transactions, for example. The system has an error rate of only 1 in 100 million.

AI+ Automobile is used to enable autonomous driving. "We use image recognition to teach the car to see even when the path isn't clear," explained Ms Lin.

She also addressed the jobs concern caused by the rise of AI, pointing out that AI is useful for specific tasks, but that it needs human interaction. "The future is in humans and AI," she said. The challenge is to work together, like a team."

Panel Discussion

In a discussion on helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) find ways to integrate AI in their operations, panel members mentioned current government initiatives, such as the tech voucher programme, and things the government could do more of, such as helping SMEs retrain and retool. Mr Wong pointed out that SMEs were more agile than large companies and can move new concepts to market much more quickly. He said the key was to help SMEs articulate their problems. "They have ideas, but can't articulate the next step," he said. "They need direction, hints and support." He pointed out that there were a lot of AI training packages available online.

Another topic covered by the panel was how to handle the inevitability of job loss related to AI. Ms Mann suggested this be framed around enhancement. "AI will help enhance a company's products and services, thus generating more business, but there will always be a need for human contact," she said. Garrick Ng, Chief Technology Officer of CISCO Hong Kong, said that employees need to understand that AI is helping enhance products and services, not replacing humans. "People will need help undergoing retraining, but they will be part of the journey," he said. "Humans empower business, and AI helps companies make better decisions more efficiently."

Mei-kei Ieong, Chief Technology Officer, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI), said that AI will not replace humans, but certain jobs, such as bank tellers and store check-out clerks, would disappear and that how the transition is managed is the key.

Comparing Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland in the tech field, the panellists agreed that the mainland was ahead in areas such as AI and e-pay, and that Hong Kong companies were more cautious in general than their mainland counterparts, but that this was not necessarily a bad thing. Hong Kong has many advantages, they pointed out, especially in basic research in the universities, advanced technology used in the financial and logistics industries, good financial markets that can support start-ups, and better risk control, consumer protection and law enforcement.

"Hong Kong provides a good balance between technology and consumer protection," said Charles Mok, Hong Kong Legislative Councillor for the information technology (IT) sector. "Hong Kong has the same concerns many other places have, so Hong Kong is a good place to find solutions."

The Symposium on Innovation & Technology continues on Tuesday (16 Oct) under the theme "Technologies & Success Applications in an Age of AI".

Other highlight events of the Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition) 2018 include the Hong Kong Electronic Forum, which will be held tomorrow (15 Oct). Speakers including Michael Pecht, Chair Professor and Director of Centre for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering, University of Maryland in the United States; Norbert Meuser, Managing Director, Viscom Machine Vision Pte Ltd; and Ron Starman, President, Intertek EWA will discuss AI enhanced reliability and functional safety for electronic products.

TOKYO, Oct 15, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701) and Hortonworks, Inc. today announced plans for the co-development of a high performance Big Data analytics platform for AI integrating the "SX-Aurora TSUBASA" vector engine, a new hardware platform by NEC to accelerate computing using vectorization. This new platform, combined with NEC's Big Data platform "Data Platform for Hadoop," significantly improves processing performance and scalability to deliver better business results for Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning and Advanced Analytics.

Prior to this co-development, NEC and Hortonworks announced an expansion of their strategic partnership in September, 2017 to deliver a Big Data processing platform(1). Utilizing their strengths, the two companies aim to offer new products suited for advanced and high performance Big Data analysis in a wider range of industries and fields. Moreover, the companies aim to provide the results of this co-development as open source software (OSS) that can be implemented in diverse environments and various industry use cases.

Co-development plans for the analytics platform include the following:

Integration of the SX-Aurora TSUBASA platform with "YARN"(2), the architectural center of Hadoop/Spark, a data processing engine which allows customers to run their existing Big Data analytics programs on the SX-Aurora TSUBASA. This enables easy integration of applications and reduces the workload for system administrators. In a standard system architecture using YARN, the server resources required to execute a typical analysis will be reduced by 99% when compared to existing systems(3).

The integration of NEC's "Frovedis"(4) middleware with Spark on the SX-Aurora TSUBASA platform. By utilizing Frovedis, AI (machine learning) applications run up to 100 times faster on the SX-Aurora TSUBASA than on conventional servers (*3). This results in a high performance and easy-to-use platform for customers to execute AI and Big Data analysis using the Spark machine learning library (MLlib)(5).

Enhance the capabilities of NEC's distributed processing platform, "Data Platform for Hadoop," by integrating SX-Aurora TSUBASA, which allows customers to run Big Data & Analytics workloads much faster and to provide better, more accurate results.

"NEC is pleased to agree and collaborate with Hortonworks, a leading Hadoop distribution provider, to develop YARN and Spark support for the NEC vector engine, 'SX-Aurora TSUBASA.' The prime objective of the collaboration will be to provide a high-speed, parallel process computing environment best suited for customers with large amounts of data that can be utilized for developing and building essential Machine Learning-based use cases. Adding support to the vector engine for Apache, Hadoop, YARN and Spark helps the customer to quickly achieve effective results from Big Data and AI use cases," said Tomoyasu Nishimura, senior vice president, NEC Corporation.

"An enormous amount of data is required to achieve high accuracy in Machine Learning. The combination of SX-Aurora TSUBASA's high processing performance and Hortonworks HDP's scalability will be an innovative choice in the global market," said Yuji Hirokawa, regional vice president of Hortonworks, Inc. and managing director of Hortonworks Japan Co., Ltd.

Fantastic Fuji One-Two for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing

$

Toyota City, Japan, Oct 15, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - TOYOTA GAZOO Racing delighted an enthusiastic home crowd by earning a one-two victory in the 6 Hours of Fuji, the fourth round of the 2018-19 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

A compelling race saw the #7 TS050 HYBRID of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez cross the line in front, just 11.440secs ahead of team-mates Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso in the #8 car, for their first win of the season despite starting eighth.

That marked TOYOTA's sixth win from seven WEC races at its home circuit, while for Mike and Kamui it is their first victory since a memorable triumph at Fuji in 2016. It was a particularly special race for Jose, who set the fastest lap and earned his first-ever WEC win, having joined the team last season.

The result extends TOYOTA GAZOO Racing's lead in the teams' World Championship to 14 points over Rebellion Racing. Sebastien, Kazuki and Fernando stretched their advantage in the drivers' standings, with Mike, Kamui and Jose moving up to second, 13 points behind.

An action-packed start on a wet track saw Kazuki in the pole position #8 hold the advantage while Kamui put on an overtaking show in the #7, exploiting the advantage of four-wheel drive in the difficult conditions to move from eighth on the grid to second by lap two.

The excitement continued throughout a fascinating first hour. Kamui pitted early to switch to heavy wet tyres before a safety car period eliminated Kazuki's lead of over one minute. Soon after, the #8 switched to hybrid intermediate tyres, leaving the #11 SMP in the lead.

Changing weather added to the drama, with bright sunshine drying the track towards the end of the safety car period. That left Kamui on inappropriate tyres for the conditions so he was the first to pit for slick tyres after the 30-minute interruption and he took advantage by immediately setting very quick lap times.

Kazuki and the other LMP1 cars did likewise soon after and when the running order stabilised early in the second hour, Kamui led in the #7 with Kazuki close behind and both TS050 HYBRIDs steadily building a gap to the third-placed #1 Rebellion.

When Kazuki handed over to Sebastien after two intense hours, the #8 was around 10 seconds behind its sister car, but with newer tyres Sebastien began to close the gap on a fully dry track. The #8 took over the lead when Kamui brought his epic two-and-a-half-hour stint to an end, with Mike taking the wheel.

The momentum swung between the two cars, depending on who had the newer tyres. After a full course yellow with two hours remaining, Jose in the #7 led by around 20 seconds from Fernando in the #8 and the pair pushed each other hard.

Jose set what turned out to be the fastest lap of the race on lap 153 and he kept a stable gap at the front until handing the lead to Kamui with just over 30 minutes remaining. Kamui had the honour of taking the chequered flag in the #7, with Kazuki bring the #8 home second for a perfect team result.

The team is determined to repeat that result when WEC heads to China for the final race in 2018 and the fifth of eight races this season, the 6 Hours of Shanghai on Sunday 18 November.

Hisatake Murata, Team President
"I'm really happy with this perfect result and I am also pleased we could put on such a great spectacle for the fans here at Fuji Speedway. All week they have given us fantastic support so I hope they enjoyed watching this exciting race. As our home race, Fuji is a very important event for us and the target was always to earn another one-two victory in front of our fans and colleagues. We could achieve that because the team worked hard and performed well, even when faced with difficult weather conditions early in the race, so I am proud of their effort."

TS050 HYBRID #7

Race: 1st, 230 laps, 8 pit stops. Grid: 8th. Fastest lap: 1min 25.603secs

Mike Conway (TS050 HYBRID #7)
"I am really pleased with this result; to get a one-two in TOYOTA's home race is a nice feeling. It was not an easy race, especially starting from eighth but our car performed really well and my team-mates did a fantastic job as usual; they were solid and consistent which was exactly what we needed. It's great to get another win after coming so close for the last two years and to get it now at the home race is obviously great."

Kamui Kobayashi (TS050 HYBRID #7)
"It's amazing to win my home race for the second time. The team has done a great job all weekend and they really deserve this. We were disappointed after qualifying but we came back in the best way possible with a victory. We have waited a long time on car #7 for this; finally we are in the centre of the podium again. I think this can be a turning point for us for the rest of the season but now we need to celebrate this moment."

Jose Maria Lopez (TS050 HYBRID #7)
"After the disappointment from qualifying it feels so good to achieve the first win with TOYOTA. It's also a fantastic feeling to win for the first time in WEC. The most important thing is to thank everyone in Higashi-Fuji and Cologne who make it all possible as well as Mike and Kamui; it is a privilege to share a car with these guys. Together we have bounced back in a very important race for us and I cannot describe how happy I am."

TS050 HYBRID #8

Race: 2nd, 230 laps, 8 pit stops. Grid: 1st. Fastest lap: 1min 26.043secs

Sebastien Buemi (TS050 HYBRID #8)
"Congratulations to the #7 guys, they did a great job and deserve this victory. On our car we were strong but the #7 was just a tiny bit quicker than us most of the race. Congratulations as well to the team for a perfect result in our home event; I'm happy we could achieve a one-two and I hope everyone enjoyed the race."

Kazuki Nakajima (TS050 HYBRID #8)
"It was a great result for the team to get a one-two here at Fuji Speedway; it is a special moment. For our car it was a difficult race today because the #7 had better pace in the dry conditions and we were a bit unlucky with the safety car. But no complaints; that's racing. Today we finished second but we did a great job as a team for both World Championships."

Fernando Alonso (TS050 HYBRID #8)
"It was a good race. We were a bit unlucky with the safety car--we were one minute 20 seconds in front and all that advantage was neutralised, but these things happen in motorsport. We were not quite quick enough to battle the #7 today; congratulations to them. They deserved it because they have been very fast all weekend. It has been a positive day for the championship; we have extended the lead in both so overall it's a very good weekend."

Akio Toyoda, President, Toyota Motor Corporation
"We have achieved an excellent result of finishing the FIA World Endurance Championship 6 Hours of Fuji with a one-two finish. I would like to express our appreciation to all the fans supported us. The 6 Hours of Fuji this year meant a lot to us; a triumphant home return following the Le Mans 24 Hours, a chance to race again after the disappointment of the previous race and the home race of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing. Many fans, partners and suppliers who support our activities came to Fuji. In order to convey gratitude to them, I really wanted to be there but unfortunately I could not make it. I believe the best way to show them our gratitude as TOYOTA GAZOO Racing is to have a great race and I especially really wanted them to see a one-two finish like at Le Mans on our home circuit. What I could do for this purpose was to send a message to the drivers before the race: "Please drive out and enjoy the battle to the finish line!" And prior to the race, they replied to me: "We are going to race hard!" They really drove six hours like that. I think such a race could show TOYOTA GAZOO Racing's passion to those who supported us and I would like to thank all the drivers for this. Although I could not be on site, I felt the feelings of everyone in the team from the TV screen and I was able to fight with them as one team. Thank you very much to the all team members for this one-two finish, and congratulations on the long-awaited win for all on car #7! And for the fans who always support us, thank you very much. We appreciate your continued support."

Insights Shared at Symposium on Innovation and Technology

HONG KONG, Oct 15, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - The tremendous growth in data, particularly privately held data by large businesses, is the reason for, and key to, the expansion and success in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in business, according to speakers at the 13 Oct afternoon session of the Symposium on Innovation and Technology, under the theme "AI Empowerment - Grow without Limits", held during the 38th HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition).

Transforming Business through AI

Microsoft uses AI for a wide range of purposes, from helping people with visual impairments and hearing disabilities to preventing the extinction of rare species and growing better crops, according to Winnie Chu, Cloud and Enterprise Business Group Lead of Microsoft Hong Kong. Microsoft believes AI will help humans do more to be more successful and improve capability. "We are surrounded by data, but we need to leverage this data," she said.

"Microsoft is leveraging technology and putting it into applications to make work more efficient," she said. For example, Microsoft has incorporated an AI-powered presentation translator in PowerPoint that allows users to save hours and can translate slides into 60 languages. Microsoft also combines machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) to provide examples to improve writing, while Microsoft Word understands the user's language and suggests more appropriate words and expressions.

Some other examples of Microsoft's AI breakthroughs include object recognition (96% human parity), speech recognition (96% human parity), machine translation (69.9% human parity), and machine reading comprehension (88.5% human parity).

Ms Chu gave examples of industries leveraging Microsoft AI. Container-shipping giant OOCL uses it to predict schedules and cost needs, saving US$10 million per year in operational costs. In the healthcare field, Inner Eye in the United Kingdom uses three-dimensional (3D) imaging to find the exact location of tumours, allowing precise radiotherapy. In the property market, Ricacorp in Hong Kong uses AI for the benefit of both buyers and sellers, helping buyers identify the best flat for their specific needs, and helping sellers decide the best price and time to achieve their most desired outcome.

"So how can your organisation leverage AI to get more customers and work faster?" asked Ms Chu. To help companies develop the technical know-how, Microsoft has a free Certification programme, covering Data Science, AI and Big Data. "Microsoft's goal is to enable all companies to do their own AI projects," said Ms Chu. Microsoft is doing roadshows to all the universities in Hong Kong to introduce the programme. "University professors love this well-structured programme," she said. The programme is also tailored for people with disabilities.

Ms Chu explained the reasons for the success of Microsoft's social chatbot Xiaolce, which has become one of the most famous celebrities in China. Whereas other chatbots digest information and respond, Xiaolce interacts as in a normal phone conversation between friends on the phone. "Xiaolce has empathy," she said. It can predict what the person will say next and respond more quickly than the usual chatbots, making the conversation more natural. "This is important in the business world because social chatbots can enhance the online experience and bring in more revenue," she said.

"Microsoft is committed to providing a responsible AI platform to help our clients do more business," she concluded.

Human-AI Collaboration

"The possible applications of AI are almost limitless," said MeiKei Ieong, Chief Technology Officer of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), adding that Hong Kong was at the forefront in many areas. For example, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and University of Hong Kong (HKU) are frequent winners of the ImageNet Challenge, in which software programs compete to correctly classify and detect objects and scenes. A breakthrough in 2012 in solving the challenges presented in the contest was considered to be the beginning of the deep-learning (DL) revolution, he said.

AI competitiveness depends on talent, which in most cases comes from universities, and computational power for machine learning and inferences, said Mr Ieong. The top three barriers for leaders in adopting AI are the need to attract, acquire and develop the right AI talent, competition from other investment priorities for resources, and security concerns about AI adoption. The top three barriers for passive users are limited or lack of general technology capability, lack of leadership and lack of opportunities, he said.

Mr Ieong described a few examples of projects with ASTRI acting as an AI partner for Hong Kong business: (1) NLP technology that understands colloquial Cantonese mixed with English, which can be used from conducting big data applications on social media analytics to helping teachers correct common mistakes in primary students' writing; (2) an AI robot-financial adviser; (3) a surface inspection system that can detect faulty glass lenses and other surfaces, replacing labour and completing the job much faster; (4) AI Chinese optical character recognition (OCR), eliminating the need to manually enter vast amounts of data for banks and financial services companies; (5) an intelligent industry robot used for random bin-picking; and (6) optical sensing technology, used to detect driver fatigue and distraction for use in self-driving cars.

Regarding the impact of AI, Mr Ieong referred to two job reports: one by Oxford, which concluded that up to 47% of current jobs were at risk from automation, and one by the OECD, which concluded the number was only 9%. He listed possible reasons for the huge discrepancy: (1) adopting new technology is normally a slow process (though in China it is much faster); (2) workers can adjust to changing technology by retraining and retooling to do other tasks; and (3) technology change generates more jobs, though this has resulted in a shortage of AI and data specialists.

Mr Ieong identified a number of things that can be done to develop the talent needed to support AI in Hong Kong: (1) training young people, (2) attracting skilled immigrants, and (3) retraining people whose jobs are replaced by AI. He pointed out that cities such as Paris and San Francisco provide free coding universities and even free housing for students, and work with companies to supply tech workers.

Mr Ieong concluded his presentation saying, "AI will take over a lot of tasks, but will free humans to adopt more value-added, personalised and analytical roles," adding that a massive amount of tech talent is needed to implement AI in industry.

Journey to AI and Rise of Platform-centric Business Architecture

Who are the leading industry disruptors? IBM sought the answer to this question by surveying 12,000 CEOs, including 1,200 in China, and found that 74% said the main disruptors were their peers that had moved to platform-centric business models; start-ups were not the problem. And 70% said they were using data more in their business.

David Chow, Partner and General Manager of IBM Hong Kong's Global Business Services, provided these numbers in a talk on platform-centric business architecture. Mr Chow emphasised the importance of data for the success of AI. He pointed out that despite the fantastic amount of data on the Internet, 80% of all data is held by large corporations and is not available on the Internet, but that only 2% of this 80% is harvested using AI. Mr Chow asked, "How can companies use AI to take advantage of their own data, outside data and procured data?" He explained that AI capabilities included natural language processing, reasoning, processing text, audio and visual data, and providing data insights and computer architecture.

AI can provide business growth, an enhanced customer experience, decision support, talent engagement, and process and system transformation, he explained.

Regarding employment, for example, IBM has about 300,000 employees globally and uses AI to compare candidates over time both to help recruiters identify candidates most likely to succeed in a position and to examine each employee's digital footprint to help them become more effective.

Mr Chow described IBM's cognitive customer care platform. Since chatbots may not interest some users anymore, IBM was looking for ways to help consumers more effectively. It launched two new bots in collaboration with Hang Seng Bank, called Dori and Haro. HARO can understand and process Cantonese and a mixture of Cantonese and English, and is used to handle general customer enquiries, engaging in interactive dialogue to help them manage their personal finances. DORI can search for credit card merchant discounts and online store offers.

IBM conducted a case study with leading insurers in Hong Kong to develop a 24-hour assistant that can help agents with the questions their customers are asking them. The assistant has a tone analyser that understands the person's tone, style and emotional state, so that IBM can develop a personality profile and give a tailored customer experience. "Now we can use data to provide better products and services," Mr Chow said.

IBM's cognitive-capture solutions help organisations identify and classify documents, analyse content and context, and extract and flag documents for review, including forms, trade transactions and even letters, Mr Chow explained.

In the healthcare field, about 700,000 scientific articles are published each year, Mr Chow pointed out. IBM helps medical specialists identify the latest information in their field of interest to help improve institutional knowledge and best practices.

"AI is helping make life better at work and at home," Mr Chow concluded.

AI in Networking and Security

"By 2020, insights-driven businesses will steal US$1.2 trillion per annum from their less-informed peers," predicted Garrick Ng, Chief Technology Officer of Cisco Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Mr Ng explained why ML is emerging now: (1) lower storage costs, (2) much higher central processing unit (CPU) speed, which allows more to be done, and (3) algorithm maturity and efficiency.

Mr Ng also explained the difference between AI, ML and DL. DL is a subset of ML, which in turn is a subset of AI. While AI is a technique that allows computers to mimic human behaviour, ML gives computers the ability to learn from data. This is the present focus, since it is the recent explosive increase in data that allows machines to learn. But the neural network in DL is a powerful and diverse tool used at Cisco.

Cisco is involved in cognitive collaboration, applying it in the form of bots and virtual assistants, computer vision (CV), and audio and visual technology.

In CV, computing ability allows the computer to be trained to do tasks better and faster than humans can. "But we will not see Terminator-type capability in robots," he said. "CV can be used to do only very specific tasks that can't be transferred to other functions."

He showed an example of how CV can be used in a video conference to count people, adjust the temperature, identify and zoom in on the active speaker, and connect names to faces to make work more productive. In another example, Cisco's Webex assistant uses speech recognition to allow voice control and natural language understanding, which permits dialogue management and question-and-answer sessions, as well as room booking and temperature adjustment through voice commands. "These changes won't transform life," he said, "but they will make small improvements."

Another AI function is noise detection in meetings. AI can detect and classify non-human noises, and transform the noise data or mute it.

Cyber-security is being improved through AI, said Mr Ng. Cisco blocks 20 billion threats per day. By looking at initial data packets and the sequence of packet lengths and times, Sisco can map the entire internet in a three-dimensional flow, "identifying the good guys and the bad guys."

Cisco provides predictive analysis for network outages, explained Mr Ng. On one network with 57,000 devices and 60 platforms, Cisco can predict an outage 15 hours before it happens and provide a preventive fix within one hour. "ML can give these precise predictions thanks to massive data," he explained. "In the ML universe, data is king, even more important than algorithms. Whoever has the best data will have the best system."

"The main benefits of AI and ML," concluded Mr Ng, "will be intelligent infrastructure and improved business efficiency."

- 1,000+ Exhibitors to Showcase Global Fine Wines
- World of Olive Oil & Organic Wine and Spirits Corner to Debut

HONG KONG, Oct 15, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - Organised by the HKTDC, the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair will be held from 8-10 Nov (Thursday to Saturday) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The fair's 11th edition will feature 1,075 exhibitors from 32 countries and regions, with about 70 events lined up. The doors will open to the public on the last day of the fair (Saturday, 10 Nov), providing consumers with the chance to enhance their wine knowledge and experience the high spirits of Hong Kong's signature wine event.

Speaking at today's press conference to introduce this year's fair, HKTDC Acting Executive Director Benjamin Chau said: "In the first eight months of this year, Hong Kong's wine imports - mainly from France, Australia and the United Kingdom - reached HK$8.35 billion, a year-on-year increase of 10.5%. Imports from the United Kingdom and France recorded growth of 30.2% and 17.9%, respectively. Hong Kong's wine exports amounted to HK$2.66 billion during the period, with the Chinese mainland and Macau as the largest export markets, followed by Singapore and Taiwan."

Following the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government's decision to eliminate all duty-related customs and administrative controls on wine in 2008, wine imports have seen a seven-fold leap - from HK$1.6 billion in 2007 to HK$12 billion in 2017. During this period, Hong Kong developed rapidly as a wine trading and distribution centre, serving as a gateway for wines entering the mainland. Hong Kong has many advantages as a wine trading hub, with wine-related businesses - including auctions, retailing, catering, warehousing and logistics - developing alongside wine trading and distribution. Since 2009, Hong Kong has become one of the world's largest wine auction centres, with sales topping US$98 million in 2017.

According to Euromonitor International, consumer demand for wine in Asia and the mainland remains strong. It forecasts that between 2017 and 2022, wine sales in Asia will grow at 6.7% per annum. As a duty-free port with good air connectivity and excellent storage facilities, Hong Kong is globally recognised as the most cost-effective wine distribution hub. Wine merchants worldwide favour Hong Kong as a launch pad to expand their business into Asia and the mainland.

Global Wines on Show: World of Olive Oil & Organic Wine and Spirits Corner to Launch

This year's Wine & Spirits Fair will feature 27 group pavilions from wine-producing regions, trade organisations and governmental organisations around the world.
