- Annual synergies rise 14%, from Euro 5 billion in 2016 to Euro 5.7 billion in 2017
- Mitsubishi Motors reports first full year of synergies as Alliance member
- Further convergence underway in Aftersales, Quality & Total Customer Satisfaction and Business Development
- The Alliance reaffirms synergy target of more than Euro 10 billion by the end of 2022

TOKYO, Jun 14, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Renault - Nissan - Mitsubishi today reported a 14% increase in annualized synergies to Euro 5.7 billion, up from Euro 5 billion in 2016, as members of the world's largest automotive alliance benefited from growing cost savings, incremental revenues and cost avoidance.

The latest synergies reflect the economies of scale realized by the Alliance members, which reported total sales of more than 10.6 million vehicles for 2017 - becoming the world's largest automotive group in terms of sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs).

"The Alliance has a direct, positive impact on the growth and profit of each member company," said Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi. "In 2017, the Alliance turbo-charged the performance of all three companies including Mitsubishi Motors which saw its first full-year of synergy gains."

"We expect to generate growing synergies in coming years as the Alliance accelerates convergence through increased utilization of joint plants, common vehicle platforms, technology-sharing and our combined presence in mature and emerging markets. We reaffirm our synergy goal of more than Euro 10 billion by the end of 2022."

Under the Alliance 2022 mid-term plan, the member companies forecast to sell more than 14 million vehicles by the end of the plan, of which 9 million will be built on four common platforms including electric and B segment vehicles, and extending the use of common powertrains from one third to 75% of the total.

Through the converged Engineering function, the Alliance member companies share R&D costs and investments, which increases their competitiveness. For instance, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors joined forces last year to develop the next generation of Kei cars.

In 2017, the Alliance Purchasing Organization (formerly RNPO) generated significant cost reductions and avoidance through centralized sourcing of parts, equipment and tooling, global contract negotiations, and common utilities sourcing at facilities around the world.

Examples of new synergy include:
- The adoption by Mitsubishi Motors of Nissan Sales Finance and Renault RCI Bank and Services capabilities
- Benchmarking between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors in the ASEAN region
- Shared spare parts warehouses between Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors in Europe, Japan and Australia.

In Manufacturing, ongoing synergies were also realized through vehicle production on shared platforms such as the Datsun Redi-Go and Renault Kwid, and through cross-manufacturing activities such as Renault Alaskan production at the Nissan plants in Cuernavaca, Mexico and Barcelona, Spain. Costs associated with vehicle transportation were significantly reduced in 2017, as Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors combined shipments of finished vehicles from plants in Thailand to their respective dealers.

The creation of the LCV converged business unit in 2017 maximized cross-development and cross-manufacturing, delivering synergies in costs and technology in vehicles such as the Nissan platform based one-ton pick-up truck by Renault and Daimler. This allowed the extension of Alliance market coverage to 77% with a total range of 18 models across Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors.

"Deeper convergence and increased synergies will cement the sustainability of the Alliance for the long term," said Mr. Ghosn.

Using Novel Nucleic Acid Synthesis and Delivery Technologies Concluded

Research Activities Commence

TOKYO, Jun 14, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Eisai Co., Ltd. announced today that its research subsidiary KAN Research Institute, Inc. has entered into an industry-academia-government joint research agreement with six joint research organizations concerning the "nucleic drug discovery research using novel nucleic acid synthesis and delivery technologies" research project represented by KAN. This joint research project was selected by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) for its Cyclic Innovation for Clinical Empowerment (CiCLE) grant program. Believing that creating innovation through industry-academia-government collaboration is an important initiative, Eisai is currently advancing multiple projects, with this project aimed at creating a Japan-originated nucleic acid drug through industry-academia-government collaboration.

Nucleic acid drugs are medicines with a basic structure consisting of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA) or chemical modified nucleic acids, and are manufactured via chemical synthesis similar to small molecule drugs. With nucleic acid drugs, it has now become possible to directly act upon intracellular molecules (genes) with high specificity, which are difficult to target with conventional medicines. Based on these characteristics, there are high hopes for drug discovery in many disease areas. On the other hand, there is a need for technologies that can avoid toxicity and a need to establish delivery technologies that can reliably make nucleic acid drugs reach the target cells effectively and safely.

This research project aims to build a proprietary nucleic drug discovery platform by mobilizing innovative nucleic acid technologies for delivery primarily developed by Eisai, artificial nucleic acid synthesis technologies developed by Osaka University, screening technologies established by The National Institute of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition, nucleic acid production technologies owned by GeneDesign Inc., and then use this platform to discover nucleic acid drug candidates with potentially superior safety and efficacy. Eisai, KAN, Tokyo Women's Medical University, Niigata University and The National Cancer Center Hospital East will cooperate to conduct non-clinical and clinical studies.

As key initiatives for industry-academia-government collaboration in which Eisai is participating, a project aiming to identify and verify novel drug discovery target candidates linked to the development of next-generation treatments and preventative medicines for dementia at the Eisai-Keio Innovation Lab for Dementia (EKID) (Location: Keio University Shinanomachi campus) has also been selected by AMED for the CiCLE program. In addition, an initiative originated in Japan to develop biomedicines and new markers for Crohn's disease represented by Eisai's gastrointestinal disease business subsidiary EA Pharma Co., Ltd. has also been selected by AMED for CiCLE. Furthermore, an initiative for treating inflammatory bowel disease using small molecules and biomarkers through the University of Tsukuba and EA Pharma Co., Ltd. has been adopted by the Japan Science and Technology Agency's Newly extended Technology transfer Program (NexTEP).

By creating new innovation based on industry-academia-government collaboration and fulfilling unmet medical needs, Eisai is striving to contribute to increasing the benefits for patients and their families.

About CiCLE

AMED's CiCLE is a grant program to promote the establishment of infrastructure (including human resources) to respond to medical needs and the creation of an environment for open innovation and venture development based on industry-academia-government collaboration.

About Nucleic Acid Drugs

Nucleic acid drugs are medicines with a basic structure consisting of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA) or chemical modified nucleic acids, and are manufactured via chemosynthesis similar to small molecule drugs. With nucleic acid drugs, it has now become possible to directly act upon intracellular molecules (genes) that are highly specific, which are difficult to target with conventional medicines. On the other hand, in order to develop a greater number of various nucleic acid drugs, there is a need for technologies that can avoid toxicity and a need to establish delivery technologies that can reliably make nucleic acids reach the target cells.

There are several types of nucleic acid drugs with differences in structure, targeting and mechanism of action, and pharmaceutical products such as antisense therapies that target RNA as well as aptamers that bind to proteins outside cells and interfere with their function have been approved (including in Japan).

About KAN Research Institute Inc.

KAN Research Institute, Inc. (KAN) is a 100% wholly owned research and development subsidiary of Eisai Co., Ltd. KAN is a research group that aims to discover and develop new drugs based on novel therapeutic concepts in order to fulfill unmet medical needs with truly original science. Initially established with its strengths in Integrative Cell Biology for Medicine, KAN undertakes drug discovery and research activities that seek to find novel disease mechanisms and treatment paradigms by focusing on the characteristics of specific cell types and molecule localization that cause disease. Located within the Kobe Biomedical Innovation Cluster since 2006, KAN established a new research headquarters in 2014 and has continued to develop open innovation with research groups and researchers both within and outside the company. Furthermore, KAN discovered the world's first anti-fractalkine antibody E6011, which is currently being investigated in clinical studies for rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and other diseases.

TOKYO, Jun 14, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - 3GPP TSG #80 Plenary Meeting has approved the completion of the standalone (SA) Release 15 5G specifications. After the release of the 5G NR specifications for non-standalone (NSA) operation in December 2017, another essential step of standardization of 5G has been successfully completed. Now, the whole industry is taking the final sprint towards 5G commercialization. The completion of SA specifications which complements the NSA specifications, not only gives 5G NR the ability of independent deployment, but also brings a brand new end-to-end network architecture, making 5G a facilitator and an accelerator during the intelligent information and communications technology improvement process of enterprise customers and vertical industries. New business models will be enabled and a new era where everything is interconnected will be opened up for both mobile operators and industrial partners.

More than 600 delegates from the world's major telecom operators, network, terminals and chipset vendors, internet companies and other vertical industry companies have witnessed this historic moment for 5G.

Balazs Bertenyi, chairman of 3GPP TSG RAN, said: "The freeze of Standalone 5G NR radio specifications represents a major milestone in the quest of the wireless industry towards realizing the holistic 5G vision. 5G NR Standalone systems not only dramatically increase the mobile broadband speeds and capacity, but also open the door for new industries beyond telecommunications that are looking to revolutionize their ecosystem through 5G."

Erik Guttman, chairman of 3GPP TSG SA, adds: "The agreed completion of the stage 3 freeze milestone for the 5G standalone system has great significance. The 5G System specification has now reached its official stage of completion, thanks to the intense efforts of hundreds of engineers over the past three years. A special acknowledgment is due to those who led this remarkable effort in diverse committees. 5G promises a broad expansion of telecommunications, as an ever more central component of our economies, societies and individual activities. The 5G System opens the way for commercialization of services based on the New Radio and 5G Core Network and their advanced extensible capabilities. The new system provides the foundation for ongoing specialization for support of new business sectors, for unlike 4G and past generations, 5G supports the very specific requirements and individual service characteristics of diverse communications. Already, 3GPP activities have begun to leverage the 5G system to realize opportunities in areas such as industrial automation. This activity will intensify in the months and years to come, in increasingly many sectors, all on the foundation of the work that has been achieved on this occasion."

Georg Mayer, chairman of 3GPP TSG CT, said: "Two years ago, 5G was seen as a vision or even just a hype - with the closing of Rel-15 3GPP has made 5G a reality within a very short time. The outcome is an amazing set of standards that will not only provide higher data rates and bandwidth to end customers but which is open and flexible enough to satisfy the communication needs of different industries -- 5G will be the integration platform for heterogeneous businesses. All this could only be achieved thanks to the willingness of the stakeholders to work together on a common goal and due to the effectiveness of 3GPPs structure and processes. Rel-15 only marks the first step of the 5G story and 3GPP will further develop it into the future, aligning it to the needs of customers and industries."

It is firmly believed by the whole industry that, after 34 months of hard and efficient work, the carefully crafted and elaborately designed 5G specifications, a fruit of close collaborations and collective wisdom, will surely meet the high expectations.

- Start of full-scale implementation of rapid information transmission system connecting the vehicle, fire department, and base hospital with aim of increasing the number of lives saved
- Service being prepared for import vehicles with Bosch, Premier Aid, and Japan Mayday Service

TOKYO, Jun 15, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Full-scale implementation of the advanced automatic collision notification system D-Call Net is now underway at approximately 730 locations within Japan. A trial service has been ongoing since November 2015, whereby base hospitals and air ambulances have prepared systems to transmit fatal and serious injury probability data from vehicles to all fire departments within the trial area. The certified non-profit organization Emergency Medical Network of Helicopter and Hospital (HEM-Net), Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota), Honda Motor Co., Ltd., (Honda), and Japan Mayday Service Co., Ltd. (HELPNET) have cooperated on this project.

At the start of the trial, there were 10 cooperating hospitals in 9 prefectures (with 9 air ambulances), and now, there are 42 hospitals in 31 prefectures (with 37 air ambulances). This is equivalent to approximately 70 percent of the total 61 base hospitals with air ambulances nationwide (including base/cooperating hospitals). In addition to planning further expansion of cooperating hospitals, the system will be made more effective by improving data transmission methods to hospitals.

As new service providers, Bosch Service Solutions (Bosch) and Premier Aid Inc. (Premier Aid) will participate in D-Call Net to make preparations for the start of service. With vehicle connectivity rapidly progressing, the service will be expanded to more vehicles as a Japan-wide initiative, including customers with imported vehicles.

Message from HEM-Net Chairman of the Board Nobuo Shinoda, D-Call Net representative organization

"The key to emergency medical treatment for people seriously injured in traffic accidents is provision of the necessary treatment as quickly as possible. For that reason, to accurately and promptly implement a 'traffic accident--transportation--start of medical treatment' cycle, HEM-Net, Toyota, Honda, and Japan Mayday Service conducted a trial operation of D-Call Net for approximately two years starting in November 2015. With cooperation from the relevant agencies such as fire departments and hospitals, a system has now been put in place for the full-scale start of nationwide operation. Trial results show that D-Call Net can reduce air ambulance dispatch time by 17 minutes. With planned participation from Bosch and Premier Aid, we want to contribute to an improvement in the number of lives saved throughout Japan by introducing D-Call Net support into as many vehicles as possible."

About D-Call Net

D-Call Net, commonly referred to as an AACN (Advanced Automatic Collision Notification), is an advanced automatic collision notification system that uses vehicle connectivity technology. It estimates the probability of fatal and serious injuries by making an automatic analysis of data from both vehicles in an accident based on approximately 2.8 million accident data cases in Japan. The aim is to increase the number of lives saved after traffic accidents by making immediate dispatch decisions with air and ground ambulances through reporting to fire departments and cooperating hospitals.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Wins Le Mans

2018-19 WEC Round 2 Le Mans 24 Hours
TOKYO, Jun 18, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - TOYOTA GAZOO Racing won the 86th Le Mans 24 Hours, taking an historic first victory at its 20th attempt.

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_ToyotaGAZOO61818.jpg
2018-19 WEC Round 2 Le Mans 24 Hours

Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso in the #8 TS050 HYBRID started from pole position and took the chequered flag after 388 tense and often dramatic laps at the Circuit de La Sarthe to extend their lead in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez, who led for long periods in the #7 TS050 HYBRID, made it a perfect result for TOYOTA with second place in front of 256,900 fans.

TOYOTA, which had entered 47 cars at Le Mans prior to this weekend's race and finished on the podium six times, becomes only the second Japanese manufacturer to win at La Sarthe, while Kazuki is the first Japanese driver to win in a Japanese car.

The result is a culmination of intense and determined efforts by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing colleagues from Higashi-Fuji and Cologne to continually enhance its hybrid-electric technology, which won this weekend's race using 35% less fuel than in 2012, when it returned to endurance racing.

The two TS050 HYBRIDs were evenly matched throughout the 5,286km and swapped places several times during a race which featured its share of drama for the leaders.

Two stop-go penalties for the #8 car, compared to one for the sister car, required an impressive night time stint from Fernando to come back into contention on a day when all drivers performed exceptionally in a high-pressure environment.

A late fuel issue dropped the #7 car off the lead lap so Kazuki took the chequered flag for the #8 with a lead of two laps. The #3 Rebellion finished third, 12 laps behind.

After a nine-week break, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing will return to action on 17-19 August with the 6 Hours of Silverstone, the third round of the 2018-19 WEC season.

Akio Toyoda, President, Toyota Motor Corporation
"Thank you for driving all out!" Please let me direct these words to our drivers, who drove our cars for the longest distance at Le Mans, finally in our 20th challenge. At the same time, I would like to say the same to our cars, completing 388 laps, approximately 5,300 km.

And "thank you very much for letting us and our drivers drive all out!" I want to say this to all fans who have supported us for a long time, our partners and suppliers who have battled together with us, and all the team members and the people related to our team. I want to express my sincere appreciation to all.

Hisatake Murata (Team President)
"I am so proud of everyone in the team for this result. It has been our dream to win Le Mans and finally we have achieved it. Thank you so much to everyone for their incredible hard work, team spirit and never-give-up attitude. To win Le Mans for TOYOTA after so many frustrations and disappointments is a truly magical moment."

Mike Conway (TS050 HYBRID #7)
"It was an intense, close fight for a long time; we were all nervous watching on TV. We were all out there to do the best we can without taking big risks. It's been a long race, lots of things changing. It shows that TOYOTA can build two strong cars and we can race hard. Congratulations to car #8, they had a great week and a great race. Our car fell short but it's a great team result."

Kamui Kobayashi (TS050 HYBRID #7)
"Congratulations to the car #8 crew and the whole team. TOYOTA made a great job to finish the race without any mechanical troubles; just amazing. We wanted to win of course but car #8 was really strong. This is endurance racing so we tried to be safe and to manage the car. In the end both cars finished well. To be second and part of a winning TOYOTA team makes me very happy."

Jose Maria Lopez (TS050 HYBRID #7)
"I want to congratulate car #8 and the whole team. I am really proud of my #7 team, and Kamui and Mike; we gave it our all. We are here as six drivers but there are so many people behind us, working so hard. This is a big achievement for TOYOTA and that was the main target this week. We had a fair fight between the cars but to be able to bring the trophy back to TOYOTA is fantastic."

Sebastien Buemi (TS050 HYBRID #8)
"This is definitely the biggest win of my career. I struggle to realise it right now because in the last few laps I couldn't forget 2016. To finally see the car crossing the line was really special. All the preparation that goes into this day from everyone in the team, when you finally win it, it is something really big so I will enjoy this. Congratulations as well to car #7 who did an amazing job as well."

Kazuki Nakajima (TS050 HYBRID #8)
"It's great to be here finally; it has been a long time. I am almost speechless. I had great team-mates and TOYOTA gave us a very strong car. We finished the race without any issue on both cars so I feel we all deserved to win the race. To win this race has been a big dream for all of TOYOTA since 1985. There have been many people involved in this project so I am proud to be here to represent all that effort."

Fernando Alonso (TS050 HYBRID #8)
"It has been amazing. We know how important and iconic Le Mans is in the world of motorsport and as a team we achieved an amazing result. Every moment was a reminder of how tough and long this race is, anything can happen so we tried to execute our race and stay calm. Happily everything worked well. The race was hard because the two cars were very close, within one minute after 23 hours, so it was tough competitive but fair and very sporting. We wanted a one-two and we achieved that so I am very happy."

1st - #8 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing - 388 laps
2nd - #7 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing - +2 laps
3rd - #3 Rebellion Racing (Laurent / Beche / Menezes) - +12 laps
4th - #1 Rebellion Racing (Lotterer / Jani / Senna) - +13 laps
5th - #26 G-Drive Racing (Rusinov / Vergne / Pizzitola) - +19 laps

DOCOMO Develops Population Flow Statistics as Transportation Big Data

- Collaboration with Japanese governmental research institute and University of Tokyo -

TOKYO, Jun 18, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that it has successfully developed population flow statistics for analyzing population mobility based on operational data from the company's nationwide mobile network in Japan. The achievement is the result of research that DOCOMO conducted jointly with the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management (NILIM), a research arm of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), and the University of Tokyo's Center for Spatial Information Science (CSIS) between July 2014 and September 2017.

A statistically reliable dataset was produced by combining the NILIM's knowledge of urban-traffic research and planning, the University of Tokyo's academic expertise in big-data utilization, and DOCOMO's highly advanced mobile communications and statistical processing technologies. The resulting population flow statistics offer the potential for use in diverse applications, including travel surveys such as Person Trip surveys.

The research results have been released publicly in NILIM reports, and the NILIM reported the results at a session on June 11.

The research involved the statistical processing of operational data on mobile phones moving from one base station to another in DOCOMO's nationwide mobile network. The statistics were generated through a three-step process consisting of anonymization, estimation, and disclosure limitation. The resulting big data was then used to analyze how people moved about on a constant 24/7 basis throughout Japan. From this dataset, it became possible to estimate population flows in given areas, as well as specific routes, distances and speeds traveled. The data also made it possible to identify transportation modes, such as air, high-speed rail (for bullet trains) and road (expressway) transport.

Going forward, DOCOMO expects the statistics to be used by various agencies and companies for highly effective and precise planning. For example, population flow statistics broken down by specific days, weeks, months and years will support the planning of efficient traffic networks, both urban and rural. Also, data on the number of people traveling between specific regions, including by age group and means of transportation, will facilitate the planning of networks tailored to Japan's aging society and expected spikes in tourism. In addition, the data could be used to plan appropriate increases in trains, buses and taxis to popular tourist spots and to help revitalize areas by devising more effective traffic signage.

The population flow statistics could also play an invaluable role in planning for the expected increase in visitors to Tokyo in 2020. The data could be used to plan the efficient operation of rail and roadway networks during rush hours to accommodate both tourists and commuters, the operation of transport to/from sporting facilities and the development of necessary commercial facilities in and around event areas.

In the future, DOCOMO will continue developing systems to generate useful mobile big data for practical applications that benefit society.

Fujitsu Launches Edge Product Certification Program for "COLMINA" Manufacturing Solution

COLMINA Overview
COLMINA Ready Program Certification Flow
Accelerating manufacturing industry's digital transformation with rapid deployment of IoT systems

TOKYO, Jun 20, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu today announced the establishment of the COLMINA Ready Program, a certification regime for Fujitsu Manufacturing Industry Solution COLMINA, a "digital place" connecting an array of manufacturing information, from design to production to maintenance, within the manufacturing industry. The program has begun full-scale operation in June. The COLMINA Ready Program is a scheme to certify that edge products, including various devices and sensors, gateways, and software deployed to manufacturing facility IoT systems, have been verified as compatible, or not, with COLMINA. By combining products certified as compatible under this program with COLMINA, customers can create high quality IoT systems within a short time frame, as they will be able to quickly build systems that collect manufacturing and operating data from production facilities. Going forward, Fujitsu will continue to further strengthen its collaboration with partners in order to develop new services using IoT data and business application data through the operation of this program.

Background

There has been an increasing trend toward the use of digital technology, particularly IoT, in creating innovation and enhancing competitiveness in the manufacturing industry. By offering COLMINA, Fujitsu has created a place where a great variety of manufacturing information can be connected, supporting the construction of IoT systems that link data from production facilities with business application data to provide features such as failure detection and visualization of production status. At the same time, it is necessary to collect data from a variety of equipment and devices in order to use actual production facility information, and the time and effort required for the development and testing of such systems had become an issue.

- "2018 Technology Award" for 1,000kW and 450kW High-efficiency Cogeneration Systems -

TOKYO, Jun 20, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engine & Turbocharger, Ltd. (MHIET), a Group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has received two Technology Awards of the "2018 Technology Grand Prize and Award" from the Japan Gas Association (JGA). The awards were given, respectively, for development of the GS16R2, a 1,000kW high-efficiency gas engine cogeneration system, and the SGP M450, a 450kW high-efficiency gas cogeneration system. Both awards hailed the newly developed systems for their efficient energy usage and outstanding economic merits. An awards ceremony was held in Tokyo on June 14. For MHIET, this was the first receipt of JGA awards, and the third win including the period when products of these kinds were still produced by MHI.

The GS16R2, which was developed in collaboration with Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., was launched into the market in 2013. Targeted at a broad cogeneration market--from large-scale business facilities to small/medium-scale industrial applications--the GS16R2 features optimized combustion and an advanced control system that together enable the achievement of generating efficiency as high as 42.3%. Meanwhile, by keeping engine speed to a low 1,000 revolutions per minute (rpm), the parts replacement cycle has been reduced, resulting in a near 30% reduction in maintenance costs compared to earlier systems. In addition, heat recovery efficiency has been improved, giving the GS16R2 an overall efficiency rating of 78.5%. As a result, running costs have been significantly reduced.

The SGP M450, jointly developed with Toho Gas Co., Ltd., has been on the market since 2015. Through optimized combustion and the adoption of a water-cooled turbocharger and high-efficiency generator, the SGP M450 realizes superlative output and 42.0% generating efficiency--among the world's highest ratings in a 400kW-class system. Here also, enhanced heat recovery efficiency enables the achievement of overall efficiency of 81.5%. In addition, a more compact configuration results in a substantial reduction in installation space. The SGP M450 is increasingly being adopted in hospitals, commercial facilities, office buildings, factories, etc., in tandem with initiatives to meet BCP (Business Continuity Planning) needs.

JGA awards are presented annually in recognition of epoch-making technologies of outstanding originality and advancements that have made remarkable contributions to the development of gas-related operations. In 2018, two Grand Prizes and nine Technology Awards were awarded.

Inspired by receipt of two 2018 JGA awards, MHIET will continue devoting its resources to the development of high-performance, high-efficiency engines as its way of contributing to economic development and more comfortable lifestyles the world over.

Targeting cells involved in blood vessel formation could prevent the growth of the most common type of brain tumour.

Selangor, Malaysia, Jun 20, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - A type of highly malignant brain tumour contains a large number of cells involved in the formation of new blood vessels, helping it proliferate and spread. Targeting these cells could hinder tumour growth, according to new research published in the Pertanika Journal of Science & Technology.

Astrocytomas are tumours that can be found in the brain and spinal cord and originate from a type of cell, called an astrocyte, whose main function is to insulate and to provide structure for nerve fibres. They are the most common type of tumour that originates in the brain. There are four grades of astrocytomas, ranging from least to most aggressive. Grade IV astrocytomas are highly invasive and are almost always fatal. Lower grade astrocytomas are typically found in younger people while higher grade tumours are more often found in older adults.

Astrocytomas depend on new blood vessel formation to grow and spread. Researchers in Malaysia wanted to know how the numbers of 'endothelial progenitor cells' (EPCs), which play a role in new vessel formation, changed with increasing grades of astrocytoma. EPCs represent a variety of cell types that circulate in the blood and adhere to the inner linings of blood vessels.

The team of scientists examined brain tissue from 22 astrocytoma patients at the Hospital of University Sains Malaysia. They found that the numbers of endothelial progenitor cells were higher in the tumours than they were in surrounding healthy tissue. They also found that the numbers of these cells inside tumour tissue increased with age and higher tumour grade.

Previous research has shown that patients with grades III and IV astrocytomas who underwent radiotherapy or chemotherapy demonstrated a reduction in the numbers of circulating EPCs. People with grades III and IV astocytomas who didn't undergo treatment had higher numbers of circulating EPCs than healthy people.

Other studies have also shown that significantly reducing EPCs led to impaired and delayed growth in tumours followed by a reduction in the numbers of blood vessels feeding them.

The researchers conclude that their findings suggest that drugs targeting new blood vessel formation given in appropriate doses according to age and tumour grade could prevent astrocytoma growth.
