Mitsubishi Corporation Beefs Up Support for Disaster Recovery

TOKYO, Apr 17, 2015 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) announces its decision to provide an additional 3.5 billion yen, channeled through its incorporated public interest body, Mitsubishi Corporation Disaster Relief Foundation (MCDRF), for the continuation of recovery support efforts in Tohoku for another five years from fiscal year 2015. This additional contribution brings MC's total financial commitment to recovery efforts to 13.5 billion yen, of which 10 billion is being dispatched through MCDRF.

Shortly after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of March 11, 2011, MC responded by setting up the Mitsubishi Corporation Disaster Recovery Fund to provide support for recovery and rehabilitation in the areas affected by the disaster over four years. The 10 billion yen Fund, set up on March 4, 2011, was followed by the founding of MCDRF in March 2012, and has provided some 6.5 billion yen in recovery support via MCDRF to date. Going forward, recovery support initiatives will maintain the focus on scholarships for students (with an additional year of support for current recipients), MC Group staff volunteer activities, and collaboration with local financial institutions to invest in local businesses in an effort to generate employment and revive local local industry. Also taking shape is a new phase of initiatives that provide support for 'sixth industry' business development in Fukushima Prefecture

Over four years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, but recovery in the areas severely affected by the disaster is still mfar from complete. MC and MCDRF remain firmly committed to playing a role in boosting revitalization in the region.

Tech Heavyweights Add Spark to Hong Kong Electronics Fair, ICT Expo

HONG KONG, Apr 17, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - The four-day run of the HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition) and the HKTDC International ICT Expo concluded yesterday at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Event organiser, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) commissioned an independent onsite survey, interviewing more than 800 buyers and exhibitors about their views on market prospects. According to the survey, over 90 per cent of buyers and exhibitors expect overall sales to improve or remain the same in 2015, compared to last year.

Benjamin Chau, HKTDC Deputy Executive Director, said: "We saw vibrant trading momentum on the fairground. From the survey results, the prospects for wearable electronic products would be positive. The interviewees expect that smart watches, smart wristbands, and earphones or headphones that are compatible with mobile devices will have the highest potential in next two years."

Dressed For Success

Wearable electronics is the hot trend worldwide and the debut Wearable Electronics zone received good feedback from the buyers. Hong Kong exhibitor Pure Performance Distribution Limited joined the fair to promote its new smart watches that are equipped with built-in GPS and exercise-monitoring functions. The watches were very well received by buyers at the fair, according to the company's Sales and Operations Director, Timothy Hui. He said the Spring Electronics Fair was an excellent platform to present new products and promote the brand, adding that the company was in talks with many customers from emerging markets such as India, the Middle East and Egypt, and he was confident that some of the orders would be finalised within the month.

Brands On Show

This year's Spring Electronics Fair and ICT Expo featured internationally renowned tech giants and brands, such as Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Motorola and Softlayer, an IBM Company. Leading US semi-conductor manufacturing company, Intel Corporation offers silicon, turnkey solutions, basic reference designs and marketing support to more than 30 partner companies in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. Rio Branco is Brazil's second-largest distributor of computer accessories and electronics and network products. The company's Purchase Manager, Rafael Montello, has visited the Electronics Fair many times. He said the fair's wide range of products and suppliers inspires him to develop new products for his company's brands. Mr Montello said he had found 60 new suppliers at the fair and had bought US$500,000 worth of DVD players, portable sound systems, car radios and tablets from new suppliers. He had also placed orders worth US$800,000 with existing suppliers at the fair.

Tech Showcase

Held concurrently with the Spring Electronics Fair, the International ICT Expo is a signature event of the Asian ICT industry. This year's show included pavilions from Australia, Canada, the Chinese mainland, India, Korea and New Zealand. Ian Burchett, Consul General of Canada in Hong Kong & Macao, said 13 Canadian companies were featured at the Canadian pavilion of the Expo this year, offering innovative products and services in the areas of data analytics, electronic document management, mobile security, wireless technology and cloud-based IT solutions. - What is your outlook on the local markets, specifically Malaysia?

On a macro basis, the focus continues to be on the timing of the interest rate hike by the Fed. Given that uncertainty, we expect more volatility especially in the ASEAN countries, which are more sensitive to US rate cycles.

We remain cautiously optimistic about Malaysia's performance especially towards the later part of the year. A lot depends on the sustainability of its economic growth, which in turn helps drive corporate earnings. The underlying drivers of GDP growth are the infrastructure developments, and the strong demand for electrical, electronics and other manufacturing industries due to a weaker Ringgit. However, in the short-term, there could be pressure coming from Malaysia's first-ever Goods and Services Tax (GST) of six percent.

- How should institutional investors modify their investment and asset allocation strategies to suit this environment?

Investors who adopt the strategy to appoint local fund managers will have the additional edge as local fund managers have the necessary local knowledge and expertise to give them the returns they are looking for.

Some stocks remain undiscovered by investors, and depending on the economic cycle, they could be the gems for this year. Stocks selection will therefore be a very important task for institutional and corporate investors.

- What are these "undiscovered gems"?

In general, investors looking into specific countries tend to invest in the main benchmark stocks, the top 30 or 40 in the country. Yet there are certain small to medium stocks that can deliver better performance, for example in the Philippines, Indonesia, and even Malaysia. We are seeing more investors open up their policy to even look at smaller cap stocks based on local currency.

We advise investors to position defensively in light of the anticipated volatility, while selectively bargain hunting on any market weakness and staying invested in core conviction ideas with clear earnings catalysts.

In the longer-term horizon, once oil prices stabilise, the outlook should brighten as investors refocus on fundamentals such as improvement from fiscal reform and infrastructure development, with a more sustainable recovery anticipated. In the meantime, a balanced strategy of holding a good mix of defensive stocks and beta/cyclical exposure is encouraged.

Having a local fund manager who knows the market well will be an advantage.

- How do you define your fund house's investment approach and how it contributed to your success?

We see ourselves as a bottom up stock picker, searching for companies with strong fundamentals that trade at a discount to their intrinsic value. Doha, Qatar, Apr 18, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - Silence spoke as loudly against crime as the voice of 5,000 delegates in the 13th UN Crime Congress in Doha, Qatar.

In a video that is just over a minute long, members of the Qatari Social and Cultural Center for the Deaf used sign language to deliver their message to end human trafficking, violence against women and children, corruption and the use of drugs. It also talked about the link between education and security.

The video ran in a loop across all screens at the Qatar National Convention Center throughout the Congress.

An initiative of the Media Committee under the Preparatory Committee of the 13th UN Crime Congress, the video sought to promote the Congress and its message to as many people as possible.

The production was facilitated in coordination with the Center. Primary and secondary school students, as well as adults, with hearing disabilities participated.

The Center is the first of its kind in Qatar and underlines the State's policy of taking full care of its citizens and residents. It provides assistance to the hearing impaired in the fields of education, awareness and entertainment. It caters to all nationalities, gender and age and operates under the Qatar General Authority of Youth. It has been a member of the World Federation of the Deaf since 2007.

HONG KONG, Apr 20, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - The 30th edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong Houseware Fair and the sixth HKTDC Hong Kong International Home Textiles & Furnishings Fair opened today with around 2,400 exhibitors taking part. Both fairs, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), continue through 23 April at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).

"Today, the sweetness in 'home sweet home' would turn a bit sour without the essentials, the indulgences and the comforts of homeware," Mr Tsang said. "I'm talking about stylish interior design, I'm talking about luxurious bath and beauty offerings, state-of-the-art kitchenware, stunning textiles and must-have home furnishings. The rising number of exhibitors and buyers from the Mainland, and other emerging markets, underlines the growing demand for our quality home and gift products."

Asia-Africa Conference Reiterates Support for Palestine's Independance

JAKARTA, Apr 20, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - Officials of some Asian and African countries have agreed on a draft declaration reiterating support for Palestine's independence during Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) of the Asia-Africa Conference's 60th Commemoration here, Sunday.

The draft declaration on Palestine will be submitted to heads of government/state at the Asian and African Leaders' Summit for final approval, spokesman of the Indonesian foreign affairs ministry Arrmanatha C Nasir said.

In the meeting, the senior officials discussed three main documents - Bandung Message, Declaration of Re-invigorating New Asia-Africa Strategic Partnership, and Declaration on Palestine.

"Everyone agrees on (independence of) Palestine, no one has objection. In fact, the support has been there since long time ago," he said.

The Asian and African countries have emphasized their support for the process toward independence of Palestine.

Another important result of the meeting is a commitment of the Asian and African states to provide capacity building assistance for Palestine in preparing its freedom.

Regarding the draft Bandung Message and Declaration of Re-invigorating New Asia-Africa Strategic Partnership, the senior officials took longer time when discussing issues on tourism and additional sentences on decolonization.

Delegates from 86 Asian and African countries participated in the Senior Officials' Meeting of the AAC 2015 on Sunday.

Some 32 world leaders will attend the AAC Summit. The leaders who have confirmed their attendance include those from Brunei Darussalam, Jordan, Swaziland, China, North Korea, Iran, Madagascar, Malawi, Myanmar, Namibia, Sudan, Timor Leste, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Egypt, Gabon, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Singapore, and Thailand.

Six countries, namely Algeria, Angola, Liberia, the Philippines, Seychelles, and Zambia, will send deputy heads of state or government.

The AAC Ministerial Meeting to be held on April 20, will be participated in by ministers from 40 Asian and African nations.

The AAC commemorative event will also be attended by representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Union, ASEAN, the United Nations, The Arab Leagues, the South Center.

Events marking the AAC include a senior officials' meeting on April 19, a ministerial-level meeting on April 20, the Asian-African Business Summit on April 21, and the Asian-African Summit in Jakarta on April 22 and 23.

The heads of state/government will also participate in an historical walk event of the AAC in Bandung on April 24.

The AAC was first organized in Bandung in April 1955, at the initiative of Indonesia, Myanmar (Burma), Ceylon (Sri Lanka), India, and Pakistan.
