Launching a Joint Demonstration Experiment for Production Visualization and Optimization Technologies at Okuma's New Plant

TOKYO, May 16, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Okuma Corporation (TSE:6103) and Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE:6501) today announced that they have embarked on collaborative creation aiming to establish an advanced high-efficiency production model that supports mass customization making use of IoT(1) and set up an experimental model at Dream Site2 (DS2), Okuma's new plant. The two companies, both specialized in manufacturing, will work on the overall renovation of the next-generation manufacturing processes, ranging from processing to assembly and services, as well as on the creation of the model. The target of this demonstration experiment is to increase productivity by twice and to reduce production lead time by 50%(2) at DS2.

Given recent trends in the manufacturing industry, such as the rapid development of diversification in customers' needs and digital technology as well as intensified global competition, manufacturers are required to achieve mass customization that delivers productivity equivalent to that of mass production, even in ultra-high-mix low-volume manufacturing, which caters to the needs of individual customers. With this background, production planning often needs to be changed due to order interruptions for the quick delivery of a product or an unexpected change in the deadline or specifications, creating issues of interrupt production reduce.

Machine tools, among other products, are standard in the case of ultra-high-mix low-volume manufacturing. Not only are the customers' needs diversified, but also machine tools are manufactured by processing and assembling several thousand to several tens of thousands of components. Thus, it is important to construct an ultimately high-efficiency production model capable of manufacturing "just what is needed, only when needed, only in the quantity needed," even in one-by-one production(3) or when an unexpected change to an order is received.

To take on this challenge, Okuma established Dream Site1 (DS1) in 2013 and has played a leading role in implementing high-efficiency and smart factories since then. The company has studied the possibility of constructing an even more advanced next-generation factory by making use of its know-how and accumulated experience. Hitachi develops and provides solution cores for manufacturers by making use of its many years of experience and know-how as manufacturer as well as its exceptional research and development capabilities gained through the development of the IoT platform "Lumada," utilizing IT with OT(4).

Under the themes "evolution of production visualization" and "faster factory control cycle," Okuma and Hitachi created an experimental model for high-efficiency production supporting mass customization in the new plant, DS2, by integrating the know-how of the two companies.

Evolution of production visualization

By using IoT, the new system carries out advanced analysis by combining the data on the production progress conditions and the facilities' operational status, monitoring/visualizing both data in an integrated manner with the monitored/visualized data. This system allows the process to be accelerated, from the detection of bottlenecks in the process (delays in prior processes or failures in the facility, etc.) to the implementation of countermeasures for total optimization.

Using big data collected from the field and accumulated by the monitoring system regarding the progress and operational status and employment of the advanced automatic learning simulation AI(5) technology, the next step is to develop this into a system that automatically and dynamically generates a high-precision production schedule according to the ever-changing situations in the field, which had been difficult to develop in the past, aiming for fast and flexible optimization for production planning.

These systems are provided as a function of the Production Planning Optimization (PPO) solution, a solution core for industries using Hitachi's Lumada. The system infrastructure is provided by Hitachi's Demae Cloud(6).

Faster factory control cycle

The work ID (recognition tag)-based process control system is introduced to obtain an accurate understanding of the whereabouts of processed component within a plant and its status and to quickly and accurately provide operation instructions down to the hour or minute using IoT, such as in the transportation of a component. Moreover, coordination with the monitoring system on the progress and operational status enables improved accuracy for the understanding of production progress and allows accurate detection of a bottleneck and quick implementation of a countermeasure.

Okuma will examine the possibility of future developments for this production model at its other production sites in addition to DS2. Also, Okuma will provide the know-how acquired through this demonstration experiment and its high value added machine as a "manufacturing service" solution to manufacturers. Hitachi will promote the business aggressively by providing production visualization and optimization technologies, which will be verified at DS2, as a PPO, the solution core for the industry in the IoT platform "Lumada,."

Moreover, Okuma and Hitachi will review the collaboration model for developing the service business of the two companies as business partners.

Ever-popular Geylang Serai Bazaar to return with over 1,000 stalls

SINGAPORE, May 16, 2017 - (ACN Newswire) - The annual Hari Raya Light Up 2017 in Singapore will return to Geylang Serai from 20 May to 7 July 2017, to delight local and international visitors with a visual extravaganza comprising over 900,000 LED light bulbs, and a month-long shopping fiesta.

Themed "Deepening the kampung spirit", the annual event will feature new larger-than-life installations fashioned after traditional Malay icons, and educational displays about Malay arts and culture. The ever-popular bazaar will also return with a wide array of food, snacks, and traditional Malay costumes and accessories. These will be complemented by free weekend performances and movie screenings.

Dr Teo Cheng Swee, Chairman of Hari Raya Light Up 2017 Organising Committee said, "Every Hari Raya Puasa, Geylang Serai is illuminated with brilliant light displays. While being a platform for commemorating Ramadan, the annual Hari Raya Light Up also provides an opportunity for local and international visitors alike to explore the precinct and understand more about the Malay culture in Singapore. We hope that this year's event will once again charm everyone who passes through Geylang Serai, with the myriad of exhibits and lively bazaar."

"The Hari Raya Light Up is one of Singapore's major festive attractions, adding colour to the vibrant Geylang Serai precinct and to Singapore as a whole. We are glad to continue supporting the event in providing a rich festive and cultural experience for Singaporeans and international visitors," said Mr Kenneth Lim, Director of Cultural Precincts Development, Singapore Tourism Board.

- Larger-than-life installations to acquaint visitors with Malay traditions

Over seven weeks, visitors will be treated to a visual feast of larger-than-life light installations modelled in the likeness of traditional Malay heritage icons.

Located along Sims Avenue and Changi Road, the centerpieces of Hari Raya Light Up 2017 will incorporate a kampung, as if welcoming visitors into a traditional Malay home of yesteryear. This will be complemented by leaf motifs designed like songket, a traditional Malay fabric made of hand-woven patterns. Additionally, other arches will feature words of blessings that Muslims often use during the holy month.

Other gigantic installations include a 4.4-metre tall wau (Kelantanese kite) which allows the curious to learn about the richness and diversity of Malay arts and culture, and a 12-metre wide kelong (offshore platform made of wood) and sampan (fishing boat) that will form the main stage area for weekly performances and movie screenings.

Visitors will be acquainted with Malay traditions during Ramadan and Hari Raya Puasa, the history of Hari Raya bazaars and the Malay community's spirit of gotong royong (co-operation).

Visitors will also get a blast from the past, in the form of a pop-up museum showcasing gongs, fishing boats, weaponry used by Malay nobles and traditional Malay games.

- Ever-popular Geylang Serai Bazaar to return 25 May to 24 June 2017

In conjunction with Hari Raya Light Up 2017, the annual crowd-pleaser, Geylang Serai Bazaar, will return from 25 May to 24 June 2017. Spanning the areas around Geylang Serai market, Joo Chiat Complex and along Haig Road, stalls will offer exciting snacks such as candyfloss burritos, poke bowls and rainbow planet ice-cream buns. Malay patrons preparing for Hari Raya Puasa can also find a wide variety of traditional costumes and decorations at the Geylang Serai Bazaar.

- Breaking fast with new citizens

Another highlight of the festivities is a mass break fast session on 17 June. For the first time, new citizens will be invited to break fast alongside the locals to better understand the meaning behind Hari Raya.

- Rich line-up of community events

To further enliven Geylang Serai during Hari Raya Puasa, cultural performances will be held near Kampong Kembangan Community Club every weekend between 20 May and 7 July 2017. Popular acts that will perform include Ramili Sarip - Singapore's very own "Papa Rock" - and other cultural groups well-versed in the kompang (traditional Malay percussion instrument) and Malay dance.

Movie buffs can also look forward to free screenings of popular Malay films by P. Ramlee, such as Laksmana Do Re Mi, Seniman Bujang Lapok, Pendekar Bujang Lapok and Ali Baba Bujang Lapok.

Additionally, a Cultural Heritage Race on 3 June 2017 will bring Malay traditions closer to participants, as they race around Geylang Serai to discover more about Hari Raya celebrations. The event is open to new citizens, locals and tourists keen to experience another aspect of multi-racial Singapore.

CASBAA Satellite Industry Forum 2017 - The 'Need to Know' for Asia

$

HONG KONG, May 16, 2017 - (ACN Newswire) - At a time of unprecedented technological and business change for the Asia Pacific satellite sector, the CASBAA Satellite Industry Forum 2017 (May 22nd at the Four Seasons, Singapore) is set to tackle the most critical issues experienced by the industry after more than two decades of continuous growth.

During the packed agenda for the Forum 2017, the Keynotes, Panels, Short Presentations, Interviews and Networking Breaks will focus on the promise of tomorrow as well as the challenges of today.

Re-usable Launchers are impacting business plans at every level, Massive LEO Constellations are now set for take-off, Space Junk Galore is making headlines, and emerging technologies such as IOT and Flat Panel Antennas are promising to change the game yet again. All this is taking place at a time while revenue growth remains marginal, and when operators in space markets around the world urgently need to capitalize on premium plans.

How can Asian satellite operators retain their Video Spectrum and serve smaller customers with economic efficiency?

Other topics to be debated include:

- Keynote: "Re-entering Asia" with Andrew Jordan, CEO, AsiaSat
After more than 15 years anchored in Europe and Australia, AsiaSat CEO Andrew Jordan has returned to the region with fresh perspectives and a clear-sighted view of "The Asian Opportunity".

- Managing Change in Times of Tech Turmoil. The CEO Panel

- "What can they be Thinking? Let's hear it from the Customers"
Competition is all fine and good, but when it leaves the customer feeling bruised, what should the industry be doing?

- The C-suite fortune hunters
In the air and on the ground, the global satellite industry is entering the future at warp speed. But do the Next Gen Operators have all the answers?

- With India in View: Forever complex; forever dynamic
Even as India makes great stridsdes in the launch sector (104 smallsats orbited in a single cluster this March), the dynamic domestic communications market remains subject to complex rules and interventions.

- In-flight connectivity is evolving as a key revenue stream -- just as the future of the Mobility Market remains unpredictable.

"More than 100 companies have registered for the CASBAA Forum 2017 with half the audience coming from Asia and much of the balance from the US and Europe," said Christopher Slaughter, CEO, CASBAA. "With so much change in the air the issues are more critical than ever. The 'Need to Know' is paramount."

The CASBAA Satellite Industry Forum 2017 also recognizes the generous support of the sponsors for this year's event:

ABS, APSTAR, Arianespace, AsiaSat, Boeing Satellite Systems, COMSYS, Effective Space, Eutelsat, Gogo, International Launch Services (ILS), Marsh, MEASAT, Newtec, NorthTelecom, SES, SKY Perfect JSAT, SpaceX and SSL.

Toyota City, Japan, May 16, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Toyota GAZOO Racing can confirm a modified driver line-up to optimise its competitive level in next month's Le Mans 24 Hours, the third round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi will now share the #7 TS050 Hybrid with Stephane Sarrazin for Le Mans, recreating the line-up which finished second last year at La Sarthe on its way to third in the drivers' World Championship.

Jose Maria Lopez has been able to complete only a handful of racing laps in WEC following his accident at Silverstone and resulting injury, which prevented him driving at Spa. He will now team up with Nicolas Lapierre and Yuji Kunimoto in the #9 car.

The line-up of the #8 TS050 Hybrid remains unchanged, with Sebastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima competing together at Le Mans for the third successive year.

After Le Mans, the team reverts to a two-car entry and Jose Maria will return to the cockpit of the #7 car, alongside Mike and Kamui, for the remainder of the season.

Toshio Sato, Team President:
"Our circumstances have changed over the last few weeks as a result of the injury to Jose Maria. He is in the unfortunate position of having completed very few racing laps this year in WEC, so we all felt it was appropriate to adjust the driver line-up. I am very confident that Stephane will fit well into a #7 line-up which can fight for the win. Jose Maria, like Yuji, will learn a lot at Le Mans this year, familiarising himself with the track and the event in general, and this is an important step for the future as well."

Lexus RC (Qualifying Race)
"Toyota employees take up the challenge as part of our grassroots activities aimed at developing our people and cars"

Toyota City, Japan, May 17, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Toyota GAZOO Racing is to compete in the Lexus RC in the 45th of The 24 Hours of Nurburgring endurance race, to be held at Germany's Nurburgring from Thursday May 25th through Sunday May 28th, 2017.

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_ToyotaLexusRC517.jpg
Lexus RC (Qualifying Race)

The 24 Hours of Nurburgring is a grueling race that involves driving continuously for twenty-four hours on a 25 kilometer course featuring 300 meters of elevation change and about 200 corners. Toyota GAZOO Racing has been competing in this race since 2007, and it is the starting point for our activities aimed at developing our people and cars.

The mechanics and engineers, who are Toyota employees, aim to test our cars to the limits and learn how to make them better than ever, by gaining experience under even harsher conditions than testing and evaluations conducted on regular test courses. This valuable experience is subsequently fed back into the development of all kinds of vehicles.

In last year's race, the Lexus RC was afflicted with a powertrain issue right from the start and the team battled for 13 hours to fix it. Unfortunately, however, their efforts were not successful and the car was ultimately forced to retire.

This year we have significantly accelerated the cycle of vehicle production and testing, and the RC is performing well so far. Having made substantial improvements to the car, we aim to avenge last year's disappointing defeat as we compete in The 24 Hours of Nurburgring.

Driver and Chief Mechanic's comments:

Takuto Iguchi, Driver

"The car has been steadily improving through the testing in Japan and the preliminary races (VLN, Qualifying Race) at the Nurburgring. (During the preliminary race) the car ran mostly trouble-free and the performance was almost too good in some ways, but you can never be sure what will happen in The 24 Hours of Nurburgring. I hope that the whole team will be able to maintain our focus and compete with a great sense of unity."

Yasuo Hirata, Chief Mechanic (Employee of Toyota Motor Corporation)

"The incremental improvements made by both the team and the car are clearly reflected in the timing data and the driver's comments."

"The whole team is working to improve their precision and resolve any remaining problems with the car, and we will continue our efforts right up to the last minute so that the drivers will have a safer and more comfortable car by the time they arrive on the starting grid at The 24 Hours of Nurburgring."

Event connects new businesses with potential investors

HONG KONG, May 17, 2017 - (ACN Newswire) - A one-stop platform for new businesses to find funding and support services, the HKTDC Entrepreneur Day will return this week with informative forums, practical pitching sessions and networking events for start-ups. Taking place on 19-20 May at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the event is one of the more than 330 trade fairs and promotional activities organised each year by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), a statutory body dedicated to creating opportunities for Hong Kong's businesses.

More than 270 exhibitors have signed up for the ninth edition of Entrepreneur Day, the largest participation so far at the event which will focus on three critical factors - creativity, capital and connections - to help start-ups get their businesses up and running.

- Financial support

Among the key aims of Entrepreneur Day is connecting fledgling entrepreneurs with investors. Lack of funding or difficulty finding financial backing is one of the biggest hurdles that start-ups must overcome. A recent survey conducted by the HKTDC revealed that 69 per cent of respondents believe access to capital is a major obstacle, particularly at the prototype and testing stage. When start-ups reach the expansion stage, it is still difficult for them to find the financial support they need: 58 per cent of companies surveyed said obtaining adequate access to capital is the biggest challenge they face.

Start-ups will also get the opportunity to meet representatives from angel funds and venture capitalists, including Carman Chan, Managing Partner of Click Ventures Limited, which has previously invested in globally recognised brands including digital music service Spotify and online social networking portal Meetup. Other high-profile investors at Entrepreneur Day include Veronika Kuznetsova, Managing Director of SuperCharger Fintech Accelerator, a 12-week accelerator programme for fintech companies.

- Pitching practice

Another highlight of the two-day event is the Pitchathon, involving organisations including StartHub, Hong Kong Startup Council and Cocoon. Pitchathon is designed to help start-ups pursue incubator support and hone their fundraising skills. Starthub 3.0 Pitching Competition has previously attracted more than 100 startup projects and investment institutions to Hong Kong and Chinese mainland at its two previous events. The Angels Investment Foundation will allocate HK$20 million to the winning investment value projects of the competition.

Another seminar, "Start-up Atlas - Crowdfunding Your Start-ups", will provide practical tips on getting a crowdfunding campaign up and running from those in the know, including Florian Simmendinger, CEO & Co-Founder of Soundbrenner Limited, the world's first wearable for musicians, who raised more than US$230,000 for his vibrating metronome on Indiegogo.

Recognising that start-ups struggle to raise funding, Entrepreneur Day will feature exhibitors from several prominent funding schemes and start-up support programmes. These include Cyberport, which offers an Incubation Programme and Accelerator Support Programme; the Hong Kong Design Centre, which has a Design Incubation Programme; and the Trade and Industry Department which offers an SME Loan Guarantee Scheme and SME Development Fund alongside other programmes.

- Making Connections

New businesses will also be able to meet potential investors and mentors at the Start-up Mixer. Co-organised by the HKTDC and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, this networking event is similar to a speed dating session and provides a valuable opportunity for start-ups to meet mentors and investors that can see the potential of their businesses.

The Startup Weekend Hong Kong Bootcamp, meanwhile, enables participants to experience the highs and lows of start-up lifespan over an enlightening afternoon session. The four-hour event is designed to provide experiential education for start-ups and provide them with opportunity to meet with potential mentors, investors and partners.

- Enlightening dialogues

Entrepreneur Day will additionally feature a host of inspirational and informative talks as part of the Start-up Runway forum, including "Trend Projector - Innovative Travellers: The Next Lucrative Market", where successful travel start-ups will discuss upcoming trends in their industry. More, renowned elites including Simon Loong, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of WeLab, ranked among of the top 100 Fintech companies in the world; and Terence Kwok, Co-Founder and CEO of Tink Labs Limited, who recently completed a US$125 million round of series C financing, will share their insights during the Show.

Entrepreneur Day will feature a dedicated exhibition zone, The Imaginarium, which will bring together more than 50 start-ups to showcase innovative products and technologies in fields such as health technology and biotechnology, fintech, greentech, the IoT (Internet of Things), artificial and augmented reality (AR/VR), artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. Another exhibition zone, The Cosmopolitan, will feature start-up projects from overseas and the Chinese mainland.

HKTDC Entrepreneur Day (Open to Public, Free Admission)
Dates and Opening Hours: 19 May (Fri) 10:30am - 6:30pm; 20 May (Sat) 10:00am - 6:00pm

Fujitsu Develops Technology to Partition, Visualize Complex Business Application Structures by Function

Enables swift responses for customer operations, business changes

KAWASAKI, Japan, May 18, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced that it has developed technology that by analyzing a program can partition internal structures so as to simplify modification of complex business applications.

Conventionally, business applications that repeat revisions due to maintenance or the addition of new features often have internal structures that become complex, and any modifications can have wide-ranging ramifications. As a result, modifying applications in response to business changes is an enormous burden.

In order to partition a business application into each of its functional components, Fujitsu Laboratories has now developed technology that analyzes the dependencies between programs and data, and then identifies boundary candidates that would partition the program in a way that decreases the mutual dependency. Using access logs to the database when the application is actually run, Fujitsu Laboratories also developed technology that, from among the boundary candidates, finds an area of the program that should be executed as a series of operations, and then finds those areas where the business relationship is highest. By enabling the visualization of the program's boundaries that partition by function, it is possible to partition applications in cases that this had previously been difficult to achieve.

As a result, by adding revisions or upgrades that localize the changes based on the boundaries, it makes it possible for customers to quickly respond to changes in their operations or business.

Development Background

In the digital transformation of business using ICT, there is now a need for technology that facilitates rapid modification of existing business applications. In the manufacturing or retailing and distribution industries, for example, it is frequently the case that new locations are added or that there are changes in business partners, and when these changes occur, there is also a need to change the business applications themselves. Up until now, however, it was often the case that the structure of business applications was complex and changes had far-ranging impact, which required significant man hours of time consuming revisions. To resolve this problem, as a method of designing applications in which business processes can be quickly changed, in recent years there has been considerable interest in microservices(1), which are structured as multiple services, each of which runs independently. When parts of a program that frequently change are structured to be independent, as is the case with microservices, it makes it easy to deal with changes simply by replacing the services affected.

Issues

For applications that have undergone repeated rounds of maintenance and feature additions, the program dependencies and the data dependencies become quite complex, and it is frequently the case that parts of the program can be affected that were not even envisioned in the original design, making it difficult to partition existing applications into a structure in which there are few dependencies. As a result, when trying to partition a program to localize the affected areas, it was necessary to make revisions while investigating many dependencies.

The Newly Developed Technology

Fujitsu Laboratories has now developed technology to automatically identify boundaries that can partition the internal structure of business applications by function, using the program source code and database access logs as inputs.

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_FujitsuFlowchartFig1.jpg
Figure 1: Flowchart for the newly developed technology as a whole

This process of the technology is as follows.

1. Application structure analysis

When partitioning an application, this technology analyses the structure of the application, arranging the data in a way that minimizes the number of dependencies, and, in particular, extracts boundaries that minimize mutual write operation dependencies.

Beginning with a program called from outside the application, or a specified program, the technology defines groups that contain all called functions. Then the program weights the relationships between them, based on the idea that program groups that write to the same business data have a deep relationship with business data, and extracts areas that are surrounded by boundaries (Figure 1-1) using a clustering technology developed with Fujitsu Laboratories' proprietary application structure visualization software map technology(2). At the same time, data that is written to by many program groups is split off as common data.

2. Execution log information analysis

When database access logs collected when the program actually runs are available for use, the technology identifies areas where operations ought to be executed as a series, supplementing the results obtained in the first step.

In analyzing execution log information, the technology extracts database access commands as operational logs for the business application being run, extrapolates data access commands that, operationally ought to be executed in series, and identifies the programs corresponding to those commands (Figure 1-2). Using this information, the technology extracts areas of operations that ought to be executed as a series.

3. Visualization of boundaries

This technology uses software map technology to visualize the results of the first two steps (Figure 1-3). The visualization places areas with a strong mutual relationship close together.

Effects

By using this technology to identify boundaries with few dependencies, it has become possible to partition applications with a reduced number of man-hours. For example, in a test using applications from a purchasing department, the boundaries obtained from this newly developed technology (Figure 2, right) reduced mutual dependencies to less than about 15% compared with boundaries based on the categories established in the initial design (Figure 2, left), which resulted in a reduced burden of investigation and modification when partitioning the program.

Using these results, revisions and improvements can be made to applications that localize the changes, while still considering business relationships and update frequency, enabling rapid response to changes in customers' businesses. In addition, this technology enables customers to more efficiently consider which parts of their business applications to shift to microservices or migrate to the cloud in stages.

http://www.acnnewswire.com/topimg/Low_FujitsuFlowchartFig2.jpg
Figure 2: Example of boundary visualization using categories based on the initial design (left) and the newly developed technology (right)

Future Plans

Fujitsu Laboratories will continue to test the application of this technology to the analyzing of business applications for a variety of industries, with the goal of commercializing this technology in fiscal 2018.

(1) Microservices
A method in which a service as a whole is not developed as a single unit, but rather structured as multiple independent services which operate while communicating in a lightweight format.
(2) Software map
This technology has already been incorporated into application asset analysis services offered by Fujitsu Limited. "Fujitsu Develops World's First Software Map Generating Technology to Leverage Application Portfolios,".
