    - Recognition of outstanding contributions to the fundamental mechanism for quantum annealing machines and the development of thin-film organic light-emitting devices -

TOKYO, Oct 10, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - The NEC C&C Foundation today announced that the 2018 C&C Prize will be awarded to two groups for their contributions to quantum annealing and to research into random spin systems which underlie the fundamental mechanism enabling the development of quantum annealing machines, and to discovery and pioneering development of thin-film organic light-emitting devices. Prof. Hidetoshi Nishimori will represent Group A and Prof. Ching W. Tang will represent Group B. Each recipient will be recognized with a certificate of merit and a plaque. Each group will also receive a cash award of ten million yen.

The C&C Prize was established in 1985 and is awarded to distinguished persons in recognition of outstanding contributions to R&D activities and pioneering work related to the integration of computers and communications technologies and the social impact of developments in these fields. This year's two recipient groups are outlined below.

The prize ceremony and acceptance speeches will be held on Wednesday, November 28 from 15:00 at the ANA InterContinental Tokyo.

    2018 C&C Prize Recipients

    Group A

    Professor Hidetoshi Nishimori

    Professor, Tokyo Institute of Technology
    Professor, Tohoku University

    Citation

For contributions to quantum annealing and to research into random spin systems which underlie the fundamental mechanism enabling the development of quantum annealing machines

    Achievement

Quantum computing is computing that exploits the quantum-mechanical phenomena such as superposition and entanglement. Two quantum-computing approaches are commonly known. One approach replaces classical logic gates with quantum gates that perform computations with quantum algorithms. The other approach, called quantum annealing (QA), solves the optimization problem by means of an Ising model or other statistical physics model. It is believed that superimposed quantum bits (qubits) can be used in quantum computing to perform massively parallel computations and high-speed processing of data. This ground-breaking computing capability is expected to enhance materials development and combinatorial optimization and, moreover, has potential for future artificial intelligence applications.

Prof. Nishimori's quantum annealing, as a technique of quantum computing, has greatly enhanced the possibility of quick resolutions for complex combinatorial optimization problems that were difficult to solve with traditional methods. His innovative achievements, particularly, his fresh ideas from a field of theoretical research in random spin systems that is away from the information science field, are worthy of special mention. In recent years, Prof. Nishimori has participated in an IEEE Standards Association group to promote standardization of a quantum computer language. He is also involved in the Quantum Enhanced Optimization program, which was launched by the U.S. Government's Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) to develop high-performance quantum annealers. Through his involvement in these projects, Prof. Nishimori continues to actively contribute to the development, expansion, and dissemination of quantum computing technology. Quantum annealers are interesting not only for their high-speed performance, but also for their ability of low power consumption to utilize superconducting qubits. In light of the high expectations set on quantum computing in promoting sustainability and solving the increasingly complex issues facing our information society, Prof. Nishimori's remarkable achievements make him an excellent recipient of the C&C Prize.

    Group B

    Professor Ching W. Tang

    Professor Emeritus, University of Rochester
Professor, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

    Citation

For discovery and pioneering development of thin-film organic light-emitting devices leading to the progress of organic electronics industry

    Achievement

Interface technologies are the backbone of today's information and communication society. Flat panel displays (FPDs) in particular play a vital role as general interfaces as well as in compact information devices like smartphones that support everyone within the reach of the mobile internet. While liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have long dominated the FPD market, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, which work on the principle of organic electroluminescence (EL), are becoming more and more popular. OLEDs are characterized by their thin, shape-free, flexible, and surface-emitting design, and their low-voltage characteristics that are ideal for portable devices. They outperform LCDs in providing high-contrast images, high-speed response, and wide viewing angles. OLEDs have already acquired a substantial share of the compact information device market and have begun to be used in TVs and other large devices. Their myriad features may lead to revolutionary new device interfaces that will enrich the lives of people in the information society.

Prof. Tang's extensive research on organic electronics, especially OLEDs, culminated in his discovery of a highly luminous and efficient layered thin-film structure with separated functions, has remained one of the most important technological contributions in today's display industry. Since their commercialization in the late 1990s, OLEDs have surpassed LCDs to become the mainstream mobile displays. Furthermore, OLED TVs have been on the market since the late 2000s, and their sales are expected to grow in the future. Besides outstanding image quality and design, OLEDs feature low power consumption, enabling compact devices that connect people and have minimal impact on the environment. These and other aspects have made OLEDs crucial elements in various information devices and display devices; they will help to ensure the sustainability of Computers & Communications (C&C) and the information and communication society. In recognition of the enormous impact his pioneering work on OLEDs has had on the world, we believe that Prof. Tang would be an excellent recipient of the C&C Prize.

HONG KONG, Oct 10, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - Hua Hong Semiconductor Limited ("Hua Hong Semiconductor" or the "Company", stock code: 1347.HK), a global, leading specialty pure-play foundry, today announced that its second-generation 0.18μm 5V/40V BCD process platform has been successfully mass-produced. Featuring low on-resistance, a full high-voltage range, and few photoetching layers, the platform is an ideal process choice for industrial control applications and DC-DC converters, among others.

The second-generation 0.18μm 5V/40V BCD process platform has a 40V DMOS breakdown voltage of up to 52V, and its on-resistance is as low as 20 mOhm.mm2, reaching the leading process level of the node, which can improve the drive capability of products, reduce the size of chips, expand the safe-operation-area (SOA) of high-voltage tubes, and ensure the high reliability of products. The process platform has a minimum of 18 mask layers, and offers a wide range of optional components, including high-ohmic resistors, capacitors, Zener diodes, Schottky diodes, etc. The platform also makes available in-house designed standard cell library, SRAM compiler, IO and eFuse, thus providing a complete design solution for power management chips.

G-Vectoring Control Plus in operation (Mz: stabilizing moment; Fx: braking force)
Available first in the updated Mazda CX-5, for which pre-orders start today

HIROSHIMA, Japan, Oct 11, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Mazda Motor Corporation has developed G-Vectoring Control Plus, the second new-generation vehicle dynamics control technology in the SKYACTIV-Vehicle Dynamics series.(1) GVC Plus will be rolled out to all Mazda models, with the updated Mazda CX-5 - pre-orders for which start today at Mazda dealers throughout Japan - the first to get the new technology.

The original G-Vectoring Control, the first technology in the SKYACTIV-Vehicle Dynamics series, was the world's first control system to vary engine torque in response to steering inputs in order to provide integrated control of lateral and longitudinal acceleration forces and optimize the vertical load on each wheel for smooth and efficient vehicle motion.(2)

GVC Plus uses the brakes to add direct yaw moment control for further enhanced handling stability. As the driver steers out of a corner by returning the steering wheel to the center position, GVC Plus applies a light braking force to the outer wheels, providing a stabilizing moment that helps restore the vehicle to straight line running. The system realizes consistently smooth transitions between yaw, roll and pitch even under high cornering forces, improving the vehicle's ability to accurately track sudden steering inputs and crisply exit corners. It will be first piloted and launched in Guizhou, Anhui and Yunnan in China, then Southeast Asia. In its first application, iO-X aims at serving annual transactions of RMB 3.7 billion of local food, products and services in rural China. iO-X is a joint venture partnership between SZC's unique last-mile data strategies developed for rural and remote communities and MiQS Technologies (MiQS)'s high performance exchange technologies, it targets to acquire up to 20 million users in 2 years and 100 million in 5 years from developing regions worldwide.

In this first application, iO-X allows rural households or cooperatives to trade local products on the blockchain. All product sourcing, production, logistics, pricing and user data will be published in the fully-transparent environment to allow trackability, fair-trading and inclusive local development. iO-X, powered by MiQS's flagship product - XWings, can power numerous local impact exchanges at the same time to serve high-volume P2P level transactions.

Following China, iO-X will be launched in communities in Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, with observers from The World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In celebration of the first application of iO-X in Guizhou Province, a 4-day event starting today, "The Rural Product Innovation and Folk-Art Revival Forum" was organized with direct support by Maogong Township Government in Liping County, Guizhou Province. Dr. Tat Lam, co-founder and the CEO of Shanzhai City, was invited to officiate the launch.

"Building iO-x, the community impact exchange, is a remarkable achievement for Shanzhai City and more importantly the first real step towards revolutionizing the global blockchain data infrastructure for sustainable development," said Dr. Tat Lam.

"Thanks for MiQS's lightening-fast and institutional-ready exchange backend, iO-X makes blockchain technologies available for grassroots communities to facilitate their everyday life businesses and reinforce local trust economy. With the highly-adaptive nature of our poverty-market-focused user engagement solutions, we are ready to deploy the system across communities for the untapped yet highly desired impact investing markets, which are known as high-impact and high-return. This blockchain solution is well positioned to become the badly needed solution to vitalize economically underdeveloped regions as well as the driving engine for real long-tail business on the blockchain."

iO-X's first use case is developed for "GOODS FOR PEOPLE" ("GFP"), initiated by Design Venture Forward (DVF), an agricultural business and cooperative collaboration platform for rural communities in China to publish best practice data of authentic farming on blockchain to enhance fair trade and local economic growth.

Unique features of iO-X, the community impact exchange:

    - high transparency and traceability blockchain technologies for people with limited data literacy to use
    - consumers and impact investors will have access to the information throughout the farmers' profile, food production, distribution process and impact data on blockchain, ensuring food safety and fair trade
    - local farmers and suppliers can upload personal, community, food production, outcome measurement and impact validation data through SZC's DApps (impact oracle marketplace) to manage social development collectively
    - by incentivizing self-reporting data by the local communities, management and impact measurement cost will be 4 times less than the services by mainstream market stakeholders

Merging two companies of Hitachi Institute of Management Development, Hitachi Information Academy, and Hitachi Institute of Technology of Hitachi, Ltd.

TOKYO, Oct 12, 2018 - (JCN Newswire) - Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE:6501) announced today that as of April 1, 2019, it will establish a new company that combines the Hitachi Group's existing education and training institutes and companies. The new company will be formed through a merger of Hitachi Institute of Management Development and Hitachi Information Academy Co., Ltd., with operations also being transferred from Hitachi Institute of Technology of Hitachi, Ltd.

Up to now, education and training at Hitachi have been provided by three entities: the Hitachi Institute of Management Development, which handles training mainly in management and business skills; Hitachi Information Academy, which focuses on training in IT, and the Hitachi Institute of Technology, which provides training mainly in operational technology (OT) and product technologies. The new company will integrate the education and training operations cultivated up to now by the Hitachi Group, and will lead employee training measures to accelerate the Social Innovation Business on a global scale, by implementing a wide range of activities, from strategy planning for human resource development in keeping with business strategies to actual training and operations. Furthermore, based on this track record and expertise, it will strengthen the employee training services that it has provided for customers in the past, and tie activities into Collaborative Creation with customers to create new value - for example through training in the use of digital technologies - in order to support the resolution of customer's issues.

Following is the outline of the background, goals, and results of the integration.

    1. Importance of training employees to lead digital transformation

Hitachi is expanding the Social Innovation Business using digital technologies, as part of its efforts to become an "Innovation Partner for the IoT Era," as laid out in its 2018 Mid-term Management Plan. For this expansion, Hitachi has been accelerating human resource development to increase employees who can support customer's digital transformation, with knowledge and skills of digital technologies, and Hitachi has set the target to increase the number of the data scientist at Hitachi Group companies worldwide, to 3,000 by FY2021.
In addition, as noted in the "Future Investment Strategy 2018" laid out by the Japanese government, as a result of technology innovations brought about by the 4th Industrial Revolution, it has been said that AI and robots will replace humans in the execution of simple tasks and continuous, repetitive tasks, while at the same time, the shortage of human resource handling these technology innovations, including data scientists has also become an issue.

    2. Goals and effects of integration

Through this integration, Hitachi will further strengthen its ability to foster global leaders who will bring about and drive changes and transformations, and will also provide employee training services, both inside and outside of the Hitachi Group, which leverage each institute's knowledge of employee training in business and technologies and enable trainees to obtain the skills required to lead the solutions business in response to the rising tide of digitalization.

    (1) Strengthen the ability to support Hitachi's growth strategies

The new company will strengthen the ability to foster human resource who will contribute to expanding Hitachi's Social Innovation Business. For supporting customer's digital transformation using digital technologies including AI and IoT, it is necessary to change and enhance employees' skills. Hitachi will transform its human resource portfolio, by promoting recurrent education, which enables employees to undergo retraining in response to these changes, and by enhancing the "IT Professional Certification System" (an in-house qualification system). At the same time, it will accelerate the training of data scientists and human resource who can provide solutions across multiple fields as well as global leaders who will bring about and drive changes and transformations, to expand the Social Innovation Business.

    (2) Improve the quality of training and increase the efficiency of training institute operations

The new company will provide highly specialized services based on past experience and expertise, and provide training and services driven by cutting-edge learning technologies. In the future, it will improve operating efficiency by investigating the standardization of training platforms, the aggregation of bases, and the integration of systems and facilities.

    (3) Strengthen human resource training services for customers

In order to promote customer's business reforms, mainly including the users of Hitachi products, the new company will provide human resource training services capturing future needs in collaboration with Hitachi's various business units. The services provided by the new company include training services with a focus on IT and new training for digital transformations leveraging Hitachi's knowledge of OT.

By strengthening human resource training in this way, Hitachi will further accelerate the global expansion of the Social Innovation Business using digital technologies, and will contribute to the creation of new value for the customers as an "Innovation Partner for the IoT Era".
